UT RANKED NO. 17 IN AVCA POLL The Lady Vols moved up two spots to No. 17 in the most recent version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division-I poll, following their perfect 3-0 performance at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Tennessee started the season with a national ranking for the fi rst time since 2006, coming in at No. 19. The preseason ranking was the seventh in program history for the Lady Volunteers, who concluded the 2009 campaign rated as the 24th-best team in the nation after going 24-8 and reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

UT IMPRESSES AT COMCAST LADY VOL CLASSIC The 17th-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball team opened the 2010 campaign with a bang, sweeping through its competition at the 29th-annual Comcast Lady Vol Classic this past weekend at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. The Big Orange christened the season with a three-set triumph over Xavier on Friday night before downing Chattanooga the following morning. It then took out Virginia Tech Saturday evening to claim the tournament title. Senior Nikki Fowler claimed MVP honors at the competition for the second straight season, while fellow classmate Leah Hinkey and sophomore DeeDee Harrison joined her on the all-tournament team. Fowler, who also picked up Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades for her strong performances, led UT in both kills and digs for the weekend with totals of 35 and 30, respectively. She also averaged a tournament-best 3.89 kills per set in addition to hitting at a stellar .310 clip, tallying a squad-high fi ve service aces, collecting four blocks and fi nishing as the team’s top passer, with a .974 reception percentage

UT TABBED AS SEC FAVORITE The University of Tennessee volleyball team has been selected to win the 2010 Southeastern Conference volleyball title in a preseason vote by the league’s 11 coaches. This marks the fi rst time since 1994 that a team other than Florida has been voted to capture the title, snapping at least a 16-year run at the honors by the Gators. The Lady Vols received nine of the 11 fi rst-place votes for the league champion. The other two tallies both went to UF. Tennessee received 11 points to win the Eastern Division, followed by Florida with 21 points and Kentucky with 25. Georgia and South Carolina are picked to fi nish fourth and fi fth in the division respectively. The Gators did receive

two fi rst-place votes for overall champion. The defending SEC Champion LSU Tigers are predicted to win the Western Division for the third consecutive season with 13 first-place votes. The Tigers posted an 18-2 league record and a 25-7 overall record. The Auburn Tigers have been selected to finish second with 19 points, and the Arkansas Razorbacks are predicted to place third with 25 points. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are picked to fi nish fourth and fi fth, respectively, while the Alabama Crimson Tide rounds out the poll in sixth-place. Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

UT HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS Throughout the years, the University of Tennessee volleyball team has amassed a stellar 27-5 (.844) record in home openers, including a 3-0 triumph over Xavier on Aug. 27 this season. During the Rob Patrick era, the Lady Vols have been even better with an 13-1 (.929) mark in his 13 years at the helm. The lone loss during that span was to LSU on Sept. 21, 2001. This season marked just the fourth time in the past 20 years that the Big Orange has opened the season at home. Before starting off last season at home with a sweep of Tennessee Tech, the Big Orange last did it in 2006 when it welcomed Virginia, Centenary and Miami (Ohio) to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Prior to that, UT had not opened a campaign at home since it hosted Chattanooga on Sept. 6, 1991.

L A DY V O L PA I R S E L E C T E D T O PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM Senior Nikki Fowler and junior Kayla Jeter both claimed spots on the preseason All-Southeastern Conference team on Tuesday as the league announced the squad to launch the upcoming season. Fowler is the only player in the conference to have earned the preseason honor each season since its inception three years ago, while the award is the fi rst for Jeter. The Lady Vols’ two selections tie Florida and Kentucky for the most in the league. The 10-player preseason All-SEC team was voted on by the league’s coaches and ties were not broken. The squad features five juniors, four seniors and one sophomore. Seven of the selections came from teams in the Eastern Division, while the Western Division had three players named.

REPLACING THE BEST Tennessee faces the unenviable task of finding a replacement for the best defensive player in school history this season, following the graduation of all-time digs leader Chloe Goldman. An AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Libero of the Year and an All-SEC First Team member, Goldman shattered the Tennessee record for career digs, finishing with a total of 1,755 to break the previous record by 281 and place her fourth in the conference record book. She also fi nished her collegiate career with the top digs per set average in program history with 4.37 scoops per set during her four years at Rocky Top. The Monterey, Calif., native led the SEC in 2009 with 568 digs and 4.73 digs per set, becoming the fi rst player to record three consecutive seasons with 500+ digs while donning the Orange and White. Goldman also holds the three highest single-season dig totals in school history with her 2009 tally ranking second behind only her 628 scoops in 2007.

FOWLER NAMED CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD Senior Nikki Fowler has been named one of 30 candidates for the fi rst-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in volleyball. The honor will be given to the student-athlete with the most notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Fowler, a native of Dallas, Texas, traveled with the USA A2 Blue squad to Phoenix, Ariz., from May 29-June 1, where it swept through its competition to claim the Open Division title at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

“CHALK TALK” WITH ROB PATRICK Lady Vol volleyball fans are encouraged to attend a “Chalk Talk” session with UT Head Coach at the Courtside Club in the Ray Mears Room at Thompson-Boling Arena prior to every home match. this season Gates to the arena will open one hour before fi rst serve and Patrick’s session will begin 45 minutes prior to the start of the match. A match ticket is required for admission.

LADY VOLS ON TV For the second year in a row, the University of Tennessee volleyball team will be featured on national television fi ve times. The Lady Volunteers will appear on ESPNU twice and on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) three times. Four of the fi ve televised contests will air from the friendly confi nes of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, opening with a 2 p.m. showdown against perennially-ranked Florida at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 on CSS. The Orange and White will then make its ESPNU debut when it hosts border-rival Kentucky at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The lone road match that will hit the airwaves will take place in Gainesville, Fla., when ESPNU will broadcast the Big Orange taking on the Gators in a mid-week showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. from the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The fi nal two televised matches will both air on CSS as Tennessee will welcome Georgia and Arkansas to Rocky Top for 2 p.m. showdowns on Sunday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 14, respectively. The fi ve television matches tie Florida for the most in the league and match the program high set last season in the fi rst year of the Southeastern Conference’s contract with ESPN. Tennessee has made 20 television appearances over the past seven seasons, posting a perfect 5-0 record on the tube last year. A total of 17 SEC volleyball matches will be broadcast this season in conjunction with ESPNU, FOX Sports Net (FSN), Cox Sports Television (CST) and CSS. That is one more than last year and is the most in conference history. All matches will be broadcast live. ESPNU reaches over 73 million homes, FSN reaches 25 million and CSS/CST reaches 10 million homes.

IF YOU MOVE THERE, THEY WILL COME Since the UT volleyball team made the move to Thompson-Boling Arena full time in 2008, attendance has steadily improved to the point where they Lady Vols broke a pair of single-season attendance records last year. With 758 fans in attendance to witness its triumph over No. 10 Kentucky last season, Tennessee broke its single-season attendance record. UT ended up with a 2009 season total of 11,185, shattering the previous mark of 9,565 set in 2005. It also set the record for average attendance with 772 fans coming through the turnstiles for each contest in Thompson-Boling Arena in 2009. Those marks surpassedthe previous highs of 9,565 and 736 which it set in 2005 when it went 25-9 and reached the NCAA Final Four.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its third year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. The Big Orange has brought with it the tradition of home-court dominance that it displayed in Stokely, where it amassed an impressive 98-34 (.742) record following a multi-million dollar renovation that was completed prior to the 1998 season. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 27-5 (.844) in home matches, including a perfect 3-0 record so far this season.

Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 13 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in fi ve of the last six years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in six of the last eight campaigns. Prior to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the

previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

ROB PATRICK“Cradle of Coaches”

When Tennessee volleyball coach Rob Patrick was a walk-on quarterback and captain of the volleyball team at Miami University, he was surrounded by a coaching tradition that has been a “huge infl uence on his career.” Long known as the “Cradle of Coaches” for its uncanny ability to produce high-caliber coaches, Miami served as training grounds for such greats as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown and Earl “Red” Blaik, in addition to the roughly one hundred Miami of Ohio graduates who currently coach at the collegiate or professional level. With six NCAA tournament appearances and an SEC title of his own, Patrick is already UT’s all-time wins leader with 267 in 14 years as head coach. Continuing Miami’s tradition of producing future generations of coaches, at least 15 Lady Vols players and assistants have gone on to coach after their time with Patrick.
