LAST TIME OUT } Head coach Brian “Penny” Collins said Gentry Center could be the hardest place to play in the Ohio Valley Conference. That statement is ringing true as the Tigers garnered its seventh victory at home, 79-74, versus SIU-Edwardsville to kick off conference play Saturday evening.}Two trips to the charity stripe lifted the Tennessee State men’s basketball team to its second Ohio Valley Conference win, 79-74 over SIU-Edwardsville Saturday afternoon in the Gentry Center.

}With 2:29 left in the game and the Tigers down one after leading for 24:32 of the afternoon, freshman point guard Mark Freeman, who had served as the floor general dishing six assists to his team, took control of the ball and drove the lane for a three-point play to take the lead, 70-72. Too close for comfort, Freeman registered his final assist, passing the ball to Jy’lan Washington at the top of the key for a Tennessee State three. SIUE added just four more points, two free-throws and a jumper, falling short of its second OVC victory, 79-74.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS }The Tigers closed non-conference play 8-5, its first non-conference winning season since 2016.

TAKE IT TO THE HOOP }The Tigers rank 13th nationally and lead the OVC in field goal percentage, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor (413-850).}Shakem Johnson ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting .682 from the field (60-of-88), while Jy’lan Washington comes in at fifth shooting .597 (37-of-62).

A SPOT AT THE TOP } Tennessee State is 9-5 on the season ranking 1st in the OVC, tied with six schools with a 1-0 league record, but holds the highest win-loss percentage .643.

SPLIKET } Eight different Tigers have made three pointers so far this season, six of which average a .300.}Michael Littlejohn leads the Tigers with 42 made three-point field goals on the season, ranking fifth in the OVC in 3-pt FGM. } The Tigers are averaging 22.5 attempts from three-point range per game through 15 games and are shooting .353 from the distance.} Jy’lan Washington is the most accurate from the distance, shooting .476 (10-of-27).} The Tigers rank fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goals made per game after sinking 17 versus Alabama A&M and another 11 versus Cal Poly.

THE LUCK OF THE GENTRY CENTER } TSU is undefeated at home in the Gentry Center, 7-0. } The team garnered its first true road victory at Fordham, Dec. 15, 66-61. } The Tigers won its first game away from the Gentry Center on neutral grounds versus Cal Poly, Nov. 28, and followed that win with a victory over North Florida. } Big Blue suffered losses at Chattanooga, #12 Texas Tech, San Diego State and at Indiana State.

A WIN WOULD... }Mark TSU’s 71st win over the last five seasons.}Improve Brian “Penny” Collins’ coaching record to 20-26.

`“DESERVE TO WIN” } TSU Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins has dubbed “Deserve to Win” his phrase for the team.} It is a philosophy that encompasses every aspect of the program from work in the weightroom to how the coaches and student-athletes interact with the community. } The roster contains ”well-rounded, high-character individuals, with high basketball IQs who lead by example on and off the court.”

WHY PENNY? } Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins got his name as a kid. Collins, born in Memphis, moved to Nashville as a young pre-teen. In honor of his favorite college and NBA player, Penny Hardaway who played in his hometown, Collins would sport the Magic jersey while on the court. The name stuck. } Collins claims both Memphis and Nashville as his hometown, as he was born in one, and raised in the other.

MEASURING UP }Head Coach Collins finished his first season at the helm 9-21, giving him better first-year record than six previous TSU men’s basketball coaches - Henry A. Kean [9-10] (1944-49, 1950-51), Ron Abernathy [7-21] (1989-91), Frankie Allen [4-21] (1991-00), Cy Alexander [7-21] (2003-08), John Cooper (9-21) [2009-12], and Dana Ford [5-25] (2014-18).

DISH FREELY } Freshman Mark Freeman leads the team with 62 assists on the season. He clocks in at fourth in the league averaging 4.1 per game. } The Tigers have two games with 20 or more assists - Alabama A&M (25) and North Florida (21).

STAYING LOCAL } The roster contains three players from Tennessee - Mark Freeman (Memphis), Carlos Marshall, Jr. (Memphis) and Jy’lan Washington (Smyrna). } Head coach Brian Collins was born in Memphis and raised in Nashville, as well as the Senior Advisor Ricky Collins, Brian’s father.

NEW BUT EXPERIENCED } Of the 12 Tiger newcomers, six have Division I playing experience, three with Power 5 universities.} For his second season leading the blue and white, head coach Brian Collins added Ricky Collins, his father, to the TSU men’s basketball coaching staff as the Senior Advisor to the Head Coach. Collins is a member of two basketball hall of fames, has won three Coach of the Year awards and is an OVC Champion himself, after leading the MTSU to the tournament championships in 1975.

GOING LONG } The average height of the Tennessee State roster increased to 6-5, with nine athletes measuring in at 6-5 and above.
