Description: An inspirational montage created in Photoshop, using two separate images, and typography.

Date: February 11, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator

Objectives: To remind everyone that God is there to help them and strengthen them. To remind them to trust in God, and know that He is watching over them.

Process:I started this project by thinking about what message I wanted to share. After some careful thought, I decided to use one of my favorite scriptures that emphasizes trusting God and knowing that He is watching over you. I then started looking through my pictures and came up with the idea of having a landscape with a stormy sky and bright sun, with a peaceful, calm looking woman in the sun’s rays. Next, I put the pictures I had chosen into Photoshop so that I could begin working with them.

I started with the landscape picture by making a background copy, then using the image adjustment tools, I changed the levels of the image, as well as the vibrance of the image. The last adjustment I used on this image was the overlay filter. I then switched to the picture of the woman and adjusted the levels, and vibrance of the image, as well as sharpened her face. After I was finished with that, I used the quick selection tool to select just the woman and then I dragged it with the move tool, to the edited landscape image. I then applied a layer mask to the layer with the woman on it and worked on blending the woman into the landscape image to make them appear to be one image. Next, I created the text by typing certain phrases or words by themselves, so they could be easily manipulated. I changed the weight and size of the various text and arranged it on the background. When I had completed my draft I found two people to critique my design and took notes of their feedback. I then made some of their recommended changes to my design, such as added a bevel to the text in my design, and softening some edges on the woman, and completed my final draft.

Description: A project to create a brochure for a company of our choosing, with another original logo created by me.

Date: March 28, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

Objectives: To show busy mothers, who are looking to get organized, that the Super Mommy Complex Planner is a great product, that will help them get themselves and their families organized.

Process:I used Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign while creating this project. I started by planning out my new logo, and creating it in Illustrator. After I had the logo designed I made some general layout sketches for my brochure and worked on creating the body copy for the brochure. I took my sketches and recreated them using InDesign on the computer. I used filler text to help me plan the alignment and spacing throughout the brochure. After the text and main layout was completed, I found the pictures that I wanted to use and started editing them in Photoshop. I used the selection tool to create an image that I could wrap my text around, and I made some color changes to some of the other photos. I even found a way to include some of my other work to display on the screens of the electronics photo. When I was finished with all of the editing, I placed the pictures in the InDesign document and arranged them on the pages. I then got feedback from a few people about how to improve my design. After receiving the feedback I made more changes to help add interest and align the items properly. I then printed off the brochure (a few times) and finally came out with my completed project.

Description: A Project where we had to create a logo and then design a business card and letterhead to match that logo.

Date: February 28, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator

Objectives: To create a logo for mother’s and all the hard work they put in. The colors and design is meant to be calming and beautiful.

Process:I started this project by sketching out some designs for the new logo I needed to create. I wanted to create a logo for a website that I created, but had never taken the time to make a logo for. After I came up with a general plan that I liked in my sketches, I started creating my logo using the Adobe Illustrator software. I came up with the font I wanted to use for the project and then I designed a nice flower and flowing lines to go with it. I was trying to create something calming and beautiful. After I made the logo, I sketched out some ideas for the business card and letterhead. I then used Adobe Indesign to create the business card and letterhead, using the logo I created in Illustrator and the ideas from my sketches. I made sure to use the logo on both pieces of stationary, and tried to keep the text and elements the same on all of the stationary items. I used my flower and line graphic on the back of the business card to unify and add interest to the card, and I added a watermark of that same design in the middle of the letterhead page. I struggled the most with figuring out the text color, size, and font. It is difficult to find a balance between readability, and a size that didn’t stick out and look awkward. I then printed out my stationary pieces and found that I had the opacity way too low for printing. The first couple of times I printed the letterhead, the watermark didn’t show up at all. I eventually changed the opacity from 6% to 13% so that it would show up when printing. I am pleased with the end result and will now work on redesigning my website with this new logo that I created.

Description: An Event Ad, advertising a Chocolate Auction Fundraiser to benefit homeless families in the Salt Lake City, Utah area.

Date: January 31, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Microsoft Word

Objectives: To advertise an people to come enjoy a fun and elegant evening of mingling, dining, and eating chocolate; all to help families in need.

Process:I started this project by looking though some magazines that I have for good images that I would like to scan for the project, and to help me brainstorm what kind of event I was going to advertise. When I found an image that a really liked, and had thought of what kind of event I was going to advertise, I started doing some layout sketches for the ad. After that, I picked my favorite ad layout from my sketches, and used Microsoft Word to create the ad. After the basic layout was ready I started thinking of colors for the ad. I opened my scanned image in Paint and used the eye dropper tool on the image to find the RGB values of two colors to use in my design. I did this so that the colors would work together with the image and create unity in the design. When I had a good draft ready, I found two people to critique my work, as well as the instructor. Their feedback was very helpful, and I used it to revise and finalize the final ad.

Description: A web page created for the purpose of showcasing a logo created exclusively by me.

Date: March 14, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Notepad++, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: To showcase my logo and use my skills in CSS and HTML coding to create a web page that explained that the Super Mommy Complex website is a great resource for mothers.

Process:I created this web page using the text editor Notepad ++ and the programming languages of HTML and CSS. Notepad++ is a great resource and is easy and simple to use. I started by opening the provided files. Then I inserted my logo into the web page using html. I then opened my logo in Photoshop, so that I could use the eye dropper to find colors from my logo to use in my web page. After experimenting with various colors I decided to pick two similar colors from my logo for a monochromatic color scheme. I then used CSS to change the color of the header background as well as the heading texts. I wanted to add more unity to my web page, so I used CSS to replace the normal bullet points into small pink flowers that I made in Photoshop. When I had all of the colors changed and the elements inserted, I made various changes to the spacing of the items on the page. This project was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed getting to use these programming skills again.

Description: A project where we needed to design three different logos for the same company.

Date: February 21, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives: To create logos to give a client options to choose from for their logo to advertise the Cooking for Family website.

Process:I started this project by sketching out some ideas on paper. After choosing three of my favorite ideas, I started using Adobe Illustrator to create them on the computer. I made each logo in its own file and then placed the completed version into the final artboard that displayed all three logos and the company’s name. When I had completed my initial draft I got critiques from my instructor as well as some family members to find out what I could improve. I made a few more changes to the logos, based on their advice, and then posted my designs on my Facebook feed to get votes on which one was their favorite. I received a lot more votes than I was expecting and got a very clear idea of which logo people preferred. I made a few more changes based on additional feedback from those that voted and I now have my completed draft of all three logos to present on this blog.

Description: A project to create a black & white flier, promoting a graduate leadership conference.

Date: January 24, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop

Objectives: A project to advertise to recent college graduates who are interested in developing their leadership skills.

Process:I started the process of creating this flier by first studying the materials that the client provided for me to use. I then took time to make a rough sketches of possible layouts for the flier. After I settled on which sketch I liked the most, I opened Adobe InDesign and started using the program to recreate my chosen sketch. After I had the basic framework in InDesign, I experimented with different fonts, alignments, and shapes to help unify the design. When I felt that I was close to finalizing my design. I printed my design and found people to critique my work. After compiling the feedback that I received from the critiques, I went back to InDesign to make the suggested changes and finalize my project. After making the changes, I double checked that all of the requirements that the client asked for were met. Finally I printed off the finish flier design and submitted to my clients for approval.

Description: A project demonstrating good photography and image editing skills in Photoshop. It also demonstrates the ability to use a color scheme from a photo in a design.

Date: Feb 7, 2015

Course/Instructor: COMM 130/ Julie Peterson

Program(s) Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: To showcase my Photoshop skills by creating a design using only Photoshop and my own photographs. The message of this design is that Frodo is a fun and playful animal that we enjoy.

Process:I first went around taking different pictures, trying to brainstorm ways to use them in a design. When I thought I had a photograph that was good enough, I sat down and brainstormed different ways of displaying the image. After making a few sketches with various layouts, I placed the photograph in Photoshop and use the eye dropper to find various colors in the image. Whenever I found a color that might work I went online and used a color scheme website to experiment with what other colors I could use with it. I eventually decided to go with a tetradic color scheme and found the colors I thought would work well. Finally, I started implementing my design in Photoshop. I spent a lot of time adding drop shadows and other elements to make the design more interesting and to showcase the image better. After many revisions I took my draft to be critiqued by two different people. After receiving feedback and ideas from the critique sessions, I went back into Photoshop and made the few changes that I thought would help the design. I then printed off the final project, and posted the design here in this blog.
