Wow, there are a lot of exciting things going on this month. The Temple Terrace candidate forum is October 18th, the Halloween Fall Festival is October 27th, Greco middle school is celebrating it's 50th birthday on October 27th and the Fire Station, #1, is having its open house on October 13th. For further information on these, see details inside. I would love to receive pictures of your Halloween decorated homes. I will get them in the next issue. There are some really great homes that I have seen in the past. And all of your great Halloween costumes, as well as party pictures. The pictures are my favorite part. The more pictures

you send in, the better the chance your photo will be picked for the cover. Remember to like us on Facebook. We post the pictures there, as well as reminders for the special events and what is happening in the community. Our Facebook is www.facebook.com/YCNtempleterrace. the hillsborough County Planning Commission,

based in downtown tampa's County Center,

was working out of temple terrace City hall

for two weeks during the republican National

Convention. On Tuesday, August 21st staff from the Planning Commission toured our beautiful Hillsborough River to experience our "Amazing City" from a different perspective. The pontoon boats were guided by Temple Terrace resident and Planning Commission Chairman

Frank Chillura and Jack Westberry. Both are members of the Temple Terrace River Watch Task Force. Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti also participated in the River Tour along with Tim Lancaster, local author and preservation expert. Mr. Lancaster shared the rich history of our community and an exciting story about the Temple Terrace Bat Tower's future plans. The tour also included a delicious lunch at the Temple Terrace Country Club, and the Task-Force members continued to share community information with Planning Commission staff about life in the Terrace. We hope they enjoyed their "home away from home" while working here in our Amazing City. v

"The Hillsborough River: Human Connections" is a celebration of the river presented by the USF Humanities Institute. Join other community members from Oct. 20th through Nov. 7th for a series of events celebrating the river. Whether you're interested in art, literature, history, archeology, or ecology, there are sure to be events you’ll love. Visit the events page on the project's website for a complete list. Everything is free and open to the public! After the events end, the project's website will remain an ongoing resource full of historical photos, videos, contemporary photography, and other resources. There is even a way for you to submit your own photos, documents, and stories about the river. www.hillsborough-river-connection.org/ The program is partially funded through a major grant from the Florida Humanities Council and is supported by a number of community partners.

Saturday, Oct. 20th: Sierra Club River

Paddle and Clean-up Meet at Riverhills Park boat ramp near 56th St.

at 9:00 am. While participating in the River Cleanup, participants will explore a hidden gem located in the middle of urban Tampa. Departing from Riverhills Park, we learn about the unknown oxbow called Orange Lake by the locals, ending the trip near the dam at Rowlett Park. We learn about the natural history of the oxbow, where Tampa gets its water, the wildlife and more. Approximately 5 miles. Come prepared to pick up litter floating in the river. Bring snacks, water, sunscreen, etc. After the paddle we can join other volunteers at Lowry Park for Rollin’ on the River Rally. To pre-register,

contact the leader, Sierra Club’s Gail Parsons [email protected] Cell: 813-928-1412 Monday, Oct. 22nd: Dr. Kevin McCarthy, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Florida: “10 Little-known Facts About the Hillsborough River,” USF Patel Center Auditorium. 7:00 pm, reception to follow. In this opening event, Dr. McCarthy discusses little-known but important details that explain the river’s history. Reception will feature digital displays of historic photos. Thursday, Oct. 25th: Karen Glaser: 2010 Tampa Photographer Laureate. “Above & Below Florida’s Freshwaters.” USF, Patel Center Auditorium. 7:00 pm, reception to follow. Glaser’s interest in the Hillsborough grew out of a 20 year, pure obsession with Florida’s freshwaters in general. This includes Florida’s springs, rivers, and swamps. Karen approaches her subject from an art background; her photographs are in no way intended to be a scientific mapping of Florida’s wilds. Glaser’s personal views convey the mystery and primal power of these environments in a unique, alluring and visceral way. On October 25th Karen Glaser will talk about the evolution of her Florida projects starting with Mysterious Manatees, then The Mark of Water: Florida’s Springs and Swamps to The Hillsborough River: From the Green Swamp to the Bay. Sat. Oct. 27th: Dr. Brent Weisman, USF Anthropology Professor. “A Walk Through Time: Archeology and History on the Hillsborough River.” Depart from Morris Bridge Wilderness Trail at 8 am – 3 pm. Dr Weisman will lead a guided hike “back in time” to historic places where human cultures of the distant and recent past interacted with the river’s natural environment. Picnic lunch provided. *Space is limited; registration is required. For a full list of events please see their website www.hillsborough-river-connection.org v

City leaders, noting strong public interest in the downtown redevelopment project, are taking steps to provide a status report to residents. The city is continuing to hash out details on various aspects of the redevelopment project, the largest municipal improvement project in Temple Terrace’s history. The Temple Terrace Redevelopment Agency, comprised of the mayor, city council members and city manager, met with representatives of Vlass Temple Terrace, LLC during a special workshop on Saturday, Sept. 1st. The

two sides discussed issues related to a proposed residential component in the redevelopment area, including construction standards, parking details and retail marketing. The TTRA raised several questions

and concerns, and asked the developer’s representatives to study those issues and submit a written response detailing proposed modifications to the Master

Development Agreement. The written proposal is expected soon, officials said, and a meeting will be scheduled to allow TTRA members to assess whether proposed changes will meet the city’s needs. v

THE “N” WORD IS BACK

OK, got your attention. The word is Ninja. What do you mean it’s back? Was it gone? Yes, it was. After the events of September 11, 2001 the image of a fighter clad in black with only eyes showing was alarming. So those of us practicing the authentic Ninja Martial Arts had to once again blend in to the shadows. Time has passed. The word Ninja now appears in connection with everything from food processors to flea and tic medicines. People know

the difference between a Ninja and a terrorist. Perhaps the time has come for us to step back into the light of day. In this age of sport and entertainment martial arts, where winning is based on age and athletic supremacy, people are wondering if there is a program of more practical self-protection; one that is not dependent upon superior speed and strength, one that they might actually participate in. The answer is yes. Those who don’t want to rely on the bigger, stronger, faster fighter approach to self-protection and fitness will find this unique program of skill development and life

enhancement study very gratifying. True self-protection is bigger than just winning a physical fight. Winning in life involves overcoming personal obstacles and understanding yourself and those around you. The ability to skillfully manage verbal, emotional and psychological confrontation is not taught in most martial arts programs. These are standard lessons in the programs at Quest Martial Arts. Real Ninja training involves an in depth knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system, physics and leverage, and behavioral psychology. Psychological warfare, strategic deception (for example, intentionally appearing to be weak or vulnerable as a ruse) and quick debilitating techniques are fundamental to the Ninja’s bag of tricks. Ninjas continually perfected scientific methods for defeating opponents bigger, stronger, faster and perhaps better armed than themselves. Effective techniques, sensible use of surroundings and objects at hand, as well as strategic approaches to danger were the things that mattered when losing was not an option. The Ninja developed a complete

martial system hundreds of years ago which could easily be considered the original “mixed martial art”. Modern day Ninja like Grandmaster Stephen K. Hayes and Senior Master Mark Sentoshi Russo (owner of Quest Martial Arts in New Tampa) continue this tradition of adaptation to fit current changes. These changes affect the types of attacks one might face in a self-defense scenario. These modern Ninja Masters continue the tradition of sensible adaptation. The Ninja have always sought to live in harmony with nature and fellow man. However, when the safety and health of his family or himself, or the security of his community are threatened, there has never been a more effective agent than this legendary warrior. The modern Ninja credo at Quest Martial Arts is “Life Mastery Through Martial Arts.” Students are quick to describe how this unique training for body and mind result in a stronger spirit and a growing sense of control in their lives. Who doesn’t want that? For more information visit TampaQuestCenter.com or phone 813-971-5545. v

The Temple Terrace Community Garden is gearing up for another growing season! It is already time to start planting as the summer comes to an end, and this year there will be even more space available for the group’s members. Individual plots are now established in Riverhills Park, and the grand opening for the site will take place on October 24th. Members of the Temple Terrace Better Business Bureau will be

present and all are welcome to stop by for the ribbon cutting. Other planned fall events include marching in the "Too Good for Drugs Walks" on October 6th and participating in the Temple Terrace Arts Festival on November 10th-11th by providing a children’s activity at the garden. The communal plot continues at Riverhills Elementary, where members can look forward to a wide

variety of crops in the near future, including mustard greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and fennel. Right now, there is a wide variety of herbs, including mint, basil, and oregano. The group’s website has a list of crops that are currently available and those that will be planted soon. All of the plants are grown according to organic practices, with no pesticides used. Gardening workshops will also continue so that members can gain new tips and tricks for their crops.

Although the community garden is flourishing, we always welcome new members. More information can be found at the organization’s website (www.templeterracecommunitygarden.com) and through its Facebook group. We look forward to seeing you in the garden! Each election cycle, the Temple Terrace Preservation Society (TTPS) holds a town hall type forum which we invite all candidates who are running for office in Temple Terrace to attend. The purpose is for our membership, and the public at large, to meet each candidate and learn about their platforms, particularly in regard to issues relevant to historic preservation and the Preservation Society’s mission and goals. The Temple Terrace Preservation Society (TTPS) is proud to host this

year’s forum on Thursday, October 18th at 7 pm at the Temple Terrace Community Church Parrish Hall (210 Inverness Ave). Mayoral candidates Cheri Donohue and Frank Chillura will participate as well as city council candidates Mary Jane Neale and Eddie Vance. Grant Rimbey, the third candidate for city council will attend, but not participate, as he is a current Vice President of TTPS. TTPS, along with Mr. Rimbey feel it would be inappropriate for him to

participate since he holds office with the organization hosting the forum. The forum will consist of each candidate being provided five minutes to speak about his/her platform in general, followed by a question and answer session moderated by TTPS. All questions

asked will be related to historic preservation issues. Our purpose is to understand each candidate’s position on topics important to

TTPS. Most of these issues affect the community at large so we expect the general public will find the forum of interest and urge you to attend. Refreshments will be served. Topics that will be discussed in the forum might include:· The City of Temple Terrace developing a Certified Local Government (CLG)· The importance of TTPS initiatives as they relate to adding to the cultural fabric and quality of life in Temple Terrace· The importance of TTPS initiatives relative to generating ECO and Heritage tourism dollars· Historic Preservation and the current city code· Benefits civic organizations provide to Temple Terrace and the city’s role in supporting them We invite and encourage all Temple Terrace citizens to attend, and hope to see you on October 18th! v

The first historic marker in Hillsborough County with a photograph – dedicated to the historical significance of Temple Terrace Founder Mrs. Bertha Palmer and the only Palmer structure remaining in Temple Terrace - will be formally presented to the city on October 29, 2012 at 5 p.m. at the Woodmont Clubhouse and Woodmont Park Gazebo. October 29th marks the 33rd anniversary for the establishment of the Woodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc. – the organization that saved the building from destruction and turned the original outbuilding from Palmer’s “Riverhills Ranch” (circa 1914) into a thriving non-profit community center and home for its sponsoring clubs. The marker is a result of five community organizations coming together in a group effort coordinated by local historian Grant Rimbey of the Temple Terrace Preservation Society and Woodmont Clubhouse Association President Ruth Morris. Matching funds from the GFWC Temple Terrace Woman’s Club, the GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Woman’s Club, the Temple Terrace Garden Club, the Temple Terrace Preservation Society and the Woodmont Clubhouse Association. The public is invited to the formal dedication ceremony followed by an Open House of the clubhouse and grounds, hosted by the Woodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc. For further information, please contact Ruth Morris at [email protected] or Grant Rimbey at [email protected]. Information regarding Woodmont Clubhouse is available at www.woodmontclubhouse.com . The sign will read as follows: MRS. BERTHA HONOR—

Historic Palmer Marker to be Dedicated to City

PALMER (1849-1918) Bertha Palmer, born in Louisville, Kentucky, was a world-renownedsocialite, art patron, successful businesswoman, early feminist, andphilanthropist. She played a pivotal role in the creation of the City ofTemple Terrace. In 1902, after the death of her husband, Chicagomillionaire Potter Palmer, she became entranced with exotic, mysteriousFlorida and headed south in search of new adventures and businessopportunities. Mrs. Palmer’s main residence was in the Sarasota area. She soon became one of the largest land owners in the state. Between 1910 and 1914 she established a 19,000 acre (29 square miles) hunting and game preserve in the Temple Terrace area and called it “Riverhills Ranch.”Before her death in 1918, Mrs. Palmer had made improvements to the property making it suitable for a town of 500 inhabitants. This building, known as Woodmont Clubhouse since 1979, was originally an outbuilding for Mrs. Palmer's extensive ranch. Built in 1914, it is Temple Terrace’s oldest building and the last surviving structure in the city from the Palmer era. In 1927, it was converted into the city’s first school, the one-room “Temple Terrace Grammar School.” It later was saved from demolitionthrough efforts led by Ruby McSweeney and later by Marjorie Schine. Today it is a cherished community center for three civic groups. Marker dedicated October 29, 2012, Woodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc., Temple Terrace Garden Club. v

Lewis would like to thank all of our administration, teachers,

staff, parents, and volunteers for a smooth start to the school year. We recently had Grandparents' Breakfast and would like to thank all of our grandparents for coming to this special time with their students. It was a big success! September was National PTA month. If you haven't purchased your membership, it's not too late! Please contact Dorothy Bardin at [email protected]. Please join us at our next PTA meeting on October 2nd at 8:15 in the Media Center. We are thrilled to continue the academic tutoring program that was one of the key factors in achieving our “A” school grade: PAL – Partnering to Accelerate Learning! We need your help to volunteer in this very important program at Lewis Elementary. Volunteers are needed that could commit 30 minutes to two hours per week to read together with a student and perform basic reading activities to improve basic reading, comprehension and fluency skills. The child’s teacher will supply all tutoring materials. All we need from you is a commitment of your time and a desire to help students. If you have any questions, please contact Cyndi Keding at [email protected]. Our Media Center is also looking for volunteers. Volunteers will assist our Media Specialist, Gina Giordano. Volunteer times will be during school hours from 8am-2pm and can be as little as 1 hour or up to 2 hours on a weekly basis or every other week. If you are unable to commit to a schedule, we will glady accept your help too. Email questions to [email protected] and please remember that a SERVE form must be filled out and on file with the school. Our PTA clothes closet is also in need of gently used or new uniforms, as well as spirit shirts, for students in need. You can drop them off at the front office. SAVE THE DATES!! Our annual fundraiser is approaching quickly! On October 4th from 5:30-7:30pm, we will have our annual Pride Walk Kickoff, Fall Dinner/PTA General Assembly, and Book

Fair. Come to our “build your pasta bar”, as well as watch our teachers compete in a friendly competition. Dinner will be offered for a small fee. October 18th, we will have our PRIDE WALK. Students will walk around the soccer fields while music is playing and teachers, parents, and volunteers are cheering them onward. The proceeds will be used for school enhancements within the classrooms, as well as other areas. If you would like to make a donation, please visit our website at http://www.lewispta.com/. All donations are tax deductible. That same night (18th), the teachers will hold conference night. Please check with your teacher for more information. After a fun-filled day, students will have the next day off (October 19th) for a long weekend. A special thank you to all our volunteers thus far! We value your time and help and look forward to making this another great year!!

King student makes her mark at Girls Nation

One King High School student Amber Johnson was chosen to attend both the Florida Girls Sate and the 2012 Girls Nation this past summer. The goal of Girls State and Girls Nation is to provide “aspiring young women leaders first-hand ex perience with practical insight into how the federal government works.”In order to attend Girls State last June, Johnson had to be selected by a teacher and then interview with an American Legion Auxiliary post. She was chosen from 11th grade girls from King and Whar ton High School. Johnson excelled during Girls State and was offered a full scholarship to Florida A&M University as well as chosen to go to Washington D.C. as one of the two representatives of Florida at the Girls Na tion

Conference. She participated as a Floridian Senator in a mock legislature. “The Senate sessions were by far my favorite part of Girls State,” said Johnson. Johnson also received special recognition while at Girls State. She was the recipient of the Maxine Bentley Award which is given to “the citizen of Florida Girls State determined to be the very best of

Girls State 2012”. While in Washington D.C. Johnson and the other girls took trips to the White House and met with Senator Bill Nelson and President Barack Obama on separate days.“In a word, it was the best day of my life,” said Johnson when speaking on her time with the Presi dent.Johnson is focusing on being the editor-in-chief of King’s yearbook, Clarion, and preparing for her IB final exams in May. She hasn’t decided on what course of study to take yet, but Johnson expects to use her Girls Nation experience in her future.

Chris Matthews Plays Hardball with KHS

C. Leon King High School was recently visited by political journalist Chris Matthews while he was in Tampa covering the Republican National Convention. Matthews hosts the television show “Hardball with Chris Matthews”. Matthews asked the students a

multitude of questions and listened to their answers. When he didn’t agree with a reply, he let them know it. Senior news paper editor-in-chief Braden Smith experienced this first hand when he answered a legislative ques tion and Matthews cut him off in his trademark way and asked, “Why are you hesitant?” The theme of the whole conversation was modern politics and the upcoming election. He urged the students to stay informed politically and to vote as soon as they were able to. “This state is really important,” said Matthews. “You have so much power down here.” Florida is the largest swing state and has the fourth largest electorate, only two points behind third place New York, according to Matthews. He also warned students that the voting process isn’t al ways easy. “There are people out there that don’t want you to vote,” said

Matthews when referring to the latest voter laws throughout the nation that limit voting hours and require voter I.D. to fill out the ballot. The topic took a turn when Matthews finished the conversation by suggesting to students that “nothing is more important than learning how to write your own way” and that reading and writing are

tour to sing the national anthem at Busch Stadium. Led by alumnus Adam Olson (’99) the College’s premier performance group preceded what turned out to be a competitive game between the hometown Cardinals and their National League rival, the Dodgers. The Friends recently embarked on a 9,000-mile tour during which they performed for camps and alumni groups from Alabama to California. They were grateful for the opportunity to further generate exposure for Florida College and perform for the group’s largest audience of nearly 40,000, if only for a single song.

Imagine already knowing the departments and individual staff members that will provide assistance throughout your collegiate career. Imagine having a clear understanding of the financial aid and scholarship application process prior to graduating from high school. Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School (BDCHS) students that successfully complete Hillsborough Community College (HCC) SLS 1501, College Success Skills, taught by Ms. Cheryl Fernandez have this knowledge in addition to a wealth of skills necessary to excel in the collegiate setting. Through an articulation agreement with HCC, BDCHS students that meet specific academic eligibility requirements are provided the unique opportunity to receive high school and college credit simultaneously while drastically increasing their success rate in the collegiate classroom environment. Ms. Fernandez, a veteran teacher at BDCHS, has offered the College Success Skills course to BDCHS students for 2 years. The course is

popular among the students, and is offered as a prerequisite to registration in college courses through the dual enrollment program at BDCHS. This course is designed to provide an opportunity to learn about and adopt methods necessary to achieve success in college. Through a practical, applications-based approach, students investigate study techniques, communication skills, time management and planning methods, critical thinking skills, health issues, community and campus resources, and managing personal and relationship issues that are faced by many college students. BDCHS is proud to have such an excellent applications-based experiential learning environment for our students. It is educational opportunities such as this course that enable BDCHS students to be competitive in this 21st Century global community. v

It was a regular Thursday afternoon when Chuck felt his first symptoms — intense nausea, chest pain

and profuse cold sweats. Sensing it was a heart attack, he asked his son to call 9-1-1. Chuck was rushed straight

to the Florida Hospital Tampa ER.

Their expert medical team never once gave up on Chuck. Not after he flatlined. Not after they tried four times to

revive him. Not even after his heart stopped for a full five minutes. At the Florida Hospital Pepin Heart

Institute, located at Florida Hospital Tampa, an emergency heart catheterization saved Chuck’s life.

Because he was able to reach Florida Hospital Tampa in time, Chuck received the right critical care and cardiac therapy. To this day, he’s grateful beyond words. “Thank you is a very small thing to say to the people who saved my life.”

If you are a regular reader of this publication, you probably know by now that the Temple Terrace Garden club is not made up of little old ladies. Now that we have that settled, WHO ARE WE? Being involved in our community is important to the members of the oldest club in Temple Terrace. Formed in 1946, the club takes pride in our contributions to the beautification of our City. Joining

with the GFWC TT Woman’s and the TT Junior Woman’s clubs we form Woodmont Clubhouse Association Inc. which manages our clubhouse and surrounding park with gazebo. This historical building has been preserved by many hours of labor – all done with the history of our city in mind – plus it’s a great place to host a wedding or just sit quietly to read a book. The City of Temple Terrace turned over the responsibility of plant selection/replacement and maintenance at Woodmont Park to the club in 2004. Members

participate in the upkeep of the park during monthly workdays and fund these efforts with proceeds from our annual Spring Market. This is the only park in Temple Terrace that is maintained by a non-profit club or organization. Additionally the club has designed, planted and currently maintain two additional gardens in the city – LifePath Melech Hospice House Butterfly garden since 2008 and the Lightfoot Community Center garden since 2009. Our September meeting highlighted various gardens of 8 members. We laughed at our mistakes and applauded our successes. The October 10th meeting will feature three learning opportunities –Travis Malloy will bring us up-to-date on the new Temple Terrace Community

Temple Terrace is an awesome city. Our Temple Terrace Friendship Club for Women is an active fun group in Temple Terrace. We meet at the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club on Inverness Avenue. Our president is Maryrose Owens. On Tuesday October 9th we will meet at 11:30 am for hospitality before our monthly meeting and lunch followed by Bingo, for our entertainment. Dolores Buffington will give the devotions and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our historian, Marcia Paulson, will bring the scrapbooks she has worked so diligently on, for everyone to see. A key purpose of our club is to build

friendships among the members. With Reeda Culbreath organizing, our club is busy preparing for our fall fashion show which will be held on November

11th. The theme this year is “Fall Flings - Fabulous Fashion Your Way”. The price is still only $15.00 which includes a marvelous fashion show with our very own members modeling and a delicious lunch. Put the date on your calendar and be sure to join us! All fashions will be for sale. All women are welcome but reservations are a must. Call Janet Pangborn at 985.0360. v

Garden; two members, Kathy Spaulding and Karen Smith will demonstrate a floral design and we will have a “Fun with Flower” workshop led by Mary Harkness and Lynn Martinez-McKinney. As you can see we learn from each other! If daytime meetings are not good for you, join us on Tuesday, October 13th for a program on container gardening by Lucy Hoyt and a floral design by Norma Walker. Take a look at our website www.templeterracegardenclub.shutterfly.com – we are involved in much more than can be listed in one article. Watch next month for news about Sunday in the Park or better yet go ahead and mark your calendar now for November 18th from noon – 4pm. On September 17th, Glen and the friendly staff at Beef O'Brady's on 56th Street hosted the 2nd Annual Coach of the Year Banquet for the Temple Terrace Parks and Recreation Department. Beef O' Brady's served as sponsor, and served up some great food to our coaches for free in recognition of their service to the community.

Tampa Catholic Basketball Coach (and Athletic Director) Don Dziagwa spoke to the group of local coaches on the importance of giving back to the community and the important role that they play with these young adults. The top honor of the night, the James Chambers Coach of the Year Trophy named after our director , who has 39 years of service in

Temple Terrace, went to King High School graduate and Temple Terrace local, Kevin Donaldson. Kevin was surprised and honored to receive the award. "On a personal note, it was very rewarding for me to see Kevin

receive the award as he is someone that I spent a lot of time working with while he was in high school as a member of our facility. It is great to see him giving back; Kevin is a tremendous asset to our athletic programs," said Athletics Supervisor, Scott Andrews. Some other awards were given to coaches in jest. They were as follows:

"There is Always Next Year" award - Tony Pesavento (0-10 season)"The First to Worst" award - Virgil Crump (Last year's coach of the year winner) "Three Blind Mice" Award - Stan Lewis, Marshal Dessalines, and Lamarr Simon. Presented to the three key referees that go above and beyond for the athletic department. "The goal of the night was to

show our appreciation for these individuals that volunteer their time to mentor and coach our community's children," said Andrews. "As the supervisor in charge of athletics, I am very fortunate to have this team of people around me that is aware of the critical

role they play as coach. I highly recommend that anyone interested in coaching takes the next step to inquire about it with me today." Scott Andrews can be reached at [email protected], or 813-506-6600.v

"Come on in!" That is what you will hear if you happen to stop by Temple Terrace Fire station #1 on Saturday, October 13th. From 9 am to 2 pm, we are hosting our 2012 Open House and would love for you to join us. This annual event gives you an opportunity to tour the fire station and view the equipment we use each day to help protect you and your family. Ever wonder what a fire truck looks like inside? What about how to use a fire extinguisher? Well here is your chance to learn. There will be booths and exhibits for you to visit. There will be Temple Terrace firefighters and paramedics all around to answer any question you may have. These along with many other demonstrations will be on display throughout the day for your viewing pleasure. In addition, the Temple Terrace Firefighters Local 3582 will also be on hand selling hot dogs, chips, and drinks as well as t-shirts as souvenirs. And we certainly didn’t forget our most excited visitors, the kids!

We will have Fire Engines, Ladder Trucks, Rescues, and Special Emergency Vehicles from various departments and stations on display in and around the station. And as always, we will have an obstacle course where your kids can crawl through a darkened room, climb a ladder, shoot water from a real fire hydrant through a real fire hose, among many other activities for their enjoyment. And the best part is...Admission is FREE! This is a great way to spend your Saturday morning, getting to know the men and women who devote their lives to protecting yours! Temple Terrace Fire station #1 is located at the northeast corner of Bullard parkway and 56th street, next to the Temple Terrace Public Library. Parking attendants and law enforcement will be there to assist you with parking. We hope to see you there, because we want to show you first hand how the Temple Terrace Fire department is "Striving for Excellence. Exceeding Expectations." v MCC

Preserving Temple Terrace

History One Step at a Time

What great club interaction! The Temple Terrace Woman's Club and Juniors proudly display their Stepping Stone project, 6 of which were donated to the Family Recreation Center on Saturday. The stepping stones will be placed throughout Temple Terrace as a

reminder of our history. Other fundraisers will be spawned off this project including smaller pieces for sale or at auction. The General Federation of Women's Clubs is an international service organization for teens (Juniorettes age 14-18) and women ages 18 and up who want to make a difference in the world. welcomed eight prospective members

at their ice Cream social last month

The girls learned about the Juniorettes and their upcoming activities, and completed a service project. The club's emphasis this year is preventing bullying and domestic violence, and the girls individually bagged 90 pairs of socks with labels that said "As you begin your new life and Step way

from Abuse, we hope you will find comfort and warmth as you walk into your newly found freedom." These socks will be donated to The Spring, a domestic violence shelter. The Juniorettes is a service club for teenaged girls and meets the first Monday of every month during the school year at 7:00 p.m. at Woodmont Clubhouse. The long awaited opening of Cecilia’s Tapas & Wine Bar restaurant was, Thursday, September

20th. The restaurant is located next to Season’s Fresh Café at 2816 East Bearss Avenue, Tampa. For

the first few months, The North Tampa Arts League ( NTAL ) will be showcasing their art at this wonderful new restaurant. There will be eleven NTAL artists displaying a diverse medium which range from photography to abstracts, large and small pieces. The pieces were selected by Cecilia Ball ( the owner ) and the NTAL events committee chair Carol Northington. An example of Northington’s work which can be seen at Cecilia’s Tapas & Wine Bar is “Sea Dragon” acrylic on canvas. Northington, is the past president of the NTAL. The NTAL, in its seventh year, has grown in members and had similar shows in many venues throughout the North Tampa area. According to Cecilia, the mission of Cecilia’s Tapas & Wine Bar is to make each and every experience a memorable one. Every detail is thought out from the repurposed materials used throughout the

interiors, to the design and décor. “Pride will always be evident in each dish, setting a different standard for each meal every time”. But most importantly, the owners designed a comfortable place thinking of the customer. Meals are carefully created using natural, fresh and seasonal ingredients. The inspiration for Cecilia's occurred when the owners, after a long week of hard work, wanted to unwind with a wonderful wine and a few carefully prepared small plates. Another option would be a seasonal chef's specialty, all enjoyed in a setting that was comfortable, elegant, inviting and fun. The restaurant also has several private rooms to accommodate private parties or business luncheons, including a veranda. Catering is available onsite or offsite. v

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful has combined two of its biggest events into one gigantic day of service, environmental education, friendly competition and family fun! The Hillsborough River & Waterways Cleanup and the International

Coastal Cleanup are now the 25th Annual Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup.Cleanup locations are available throughout Hillsborough County. Volunteers can pre-register for a

location of their choice or they can register the day of the event at 8am at Lowry Park Boat Ramp. The projects will begin at 9 am at various sites along the Hillsborough River, Alafia River and other waterways. We are expecting locations to fill up fast, so be sure to preregister. Data is collected from the event including the number and type of littered items, the overall tonnage removed and the amount of recyclable material diverted from each site. This information is used to determine future needs and projects in the area and create an awareness of these needs within the community. Data is shared with the International Coastal Cleanup, Keep America Beautiful, as well as local officials to help provide a local and global perspective.

Rollin’ on the River Rally

Volunteers are invited back to Lowry Park for the Rollin’ on the River Rally featuring the Recycle Regatta. The Recycle Regatta

will challenge participants to construct a watercraft from at least 70% recycled materials. Teams will launch from Lowry Park Boat Ramp providing a hilarious competition for the spectators to enjoy. This head to head race will be a competition between upper middle & high school groups, colleges, and corporations. The winners will receive bragging rights and other prizes. The winning high school group will also receive the “travelling oar” to be kept at their school for the remainder of the current school year. Building materials must be taken from items that would have otherwise been thrown in the garbage. Some suggested materials for the crafts include plastic soda or milk containers, old inner tubes, and reused wood. Excluded building materials include toxic materials, auxiliary power sources and any kind of glass. Teams will be encouraged

to come up with their own unique ideas for construction materials and design. The creation must be a two man, human-powered floating vessel – no motors, no working sails, and no trained dolphins. All participants must complete a registration form prior to the event. The Rollin’ on the River Rally also includes a River Rat Team Challenge Trivia Game, live music, free food, and environmental educational booths. Volunteers are welcome to enjoy this free after party to say ‘thank you’ for all you do to Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful! For more information visit:http://wwwKeepTampaBayBeautiful.org or contact Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful at [email protected] or call 813-221-8733. v
