Temple Sholom’s journey with the Moustafa familybegan with the unbreakable commitment to themitzvah - “Love the stranger”.
After arriving in Canada a year ago, they are part ofour community in all the senses. Hassan and Mahacontinue their English studies, improving with leapsand bounds. Haydar and Jotries are thriving inschool and completely fluent in English. Incredible!Shana is walking, talking, and totally at home inVancouver. As they continue to plant roots, Maha, the ever dynamo, has turned her true talent and
passion for Kurdish cooking into a proud business -thanks to the encouragement and support of manyTemple Sholom members.
No longer strangers, they are our dear friends, partof the Temple tapestry and living the Canadiandream. The Moustafas have shown over and overagain, love trumps all and does move mountains, thewest coast ones.
A huge thank you to every Temple member, person, and to the Rabbis who made this mitzvah happen.

In 1989, the author, Michael Chabon traveled toOakland, California, to visit his terminally ill grandfa-ther. Tongue loosened by powerful painkillers, mem-ory stirred by the imminence of death, Chabon’sgrandfather shared recollections and told stories theyounger man had never heard before, uncovering bitsand pieces of a history long buried and forgotten.
Moonglow unfolds as the deathbed confession of aman the narrator refers to only as “my grandfather.”It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sexand marriage and desire, of existential doubt andmodel rocketry, of the shining aspirations anddemonic underpinnings of American technologicalaccomplishment at mid-century and, above all, ofthe destructive impact—and the creative power—of
keeping secrets and telling lies. It is a portrait of thedifficult but passionate love between the narrator’sgrandfather and his grandmother, an enigmaticwoman broken by her experience of growing up inwar-torn France. It is also a tour de force of specu-lative autobiography in which Chabon devises andreveals a secret history of his own imagination.https://www.nytimes.com.
