Hello everyone, welcome to July and August! I have somany thank yous to hand out from the month of June thatI hardly know where to begin. First off, I would like tothank the Japanese American Community GraduationProgram for once again hosting the yearly graduates’banquet. We are always so proud of our high schoolgraduates and are deeply appreciative that the JACGPcontinues to honor and encourage them in their futureendeavors.Next I would like to thank Sakura Square Management andthe JACL for arranging to have Marsha Aizumi speakduring PrideFest weekend. She gave a wonderfulpresentation and it could not have happened without yourhard work and diligent planning. And of course, thank toMarsha Aizumi for agreeing to come, we were truly luckyto have been able to meet you and to hear your inspiringstory. My next thank you goes out to the PrideFest Paradegroup. All of your kind contributions, whether time, supplies, rides to the park and/or participation in theparade itself made this another fun-filled and meaningfulevent. And last but by no means anywhere close to least, CherryBlossom Festival. There are never enough words toconvey our immense gratitude for all of the volunteerswho come out and help with this enormous undertaking. From the planning stages through cleanup, from the oldestto the youngest, those who stay for days on end andthose who can only make it for an hour or so (and on andon) each one of you is absolutely essential and the reasonthat the festival continues year after year. It has been avery busy June, but having all of this activity at thebeginning of summer means I get to head into the rest ofthe summer with a sense of profound gratitude for ourvibrant and dedicated sangha, without whom, the templewould not exist.Thank you all for your continued support!Namo Amida Butsu

“EMBRACED BY THE ONENESS OF LIFE”15th WORLD BUDDHIST WOMEN’S CONVENTION

CALGARY, CANADA - May 30-31, 2015reported by Miyuki Mabel Googins

The opening service of the 15th World BuddhistWomen’s (WBW) Conference was trulymagnificent with the newly appointed MonshuKojun Ohtani addressing the conference. Hiswife, Lady Rusumi Ohtani, is the HonoraryPresident of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-haBuddhist Women’s Federation of Japan as wellas for the World Federation of Jodo FederationShinshu Hongwanji-ha Buddhist Women’sAssociation. The new Monshu gave an inspiringwelcome message.

In the program booklet, Lady Ohtani expressedher gratitude to all of the Sanghas in Canada andespecially to Calgary for hosting this convention. The theme of this convention was “Embraced inthe Oneness of Life” and its slogan was “OneWorld Sangha”. This is the reason why over2,000 BWA members gathered from mainlandUSA, Hawaii, Japan, South America and all ofCanada. It was her intention that this conferenceserve as an opportunity for everyone to deepentheir appreciation of the Jodo Shinshu teachingand strengthen the bonds of fellow Nembustsufollowers.

The Japanese guest speaker, Rev. Nana Yanase, was not only the keynote speaker, but alsoperformed as a singer/songwriter for the dinnerbanquet. Before entering the ministry as a 6th

generation minister in Kyo On Ji Temple in NaraPrefecture, Japan, Rev. Yanase attempted tobecome a professional singer and songwriterperforming pop songs that she mainly composed. With the lack of recording sales, as well asbattling uterine cancer at the age of 30 years,Rev. Yanase turned to singing gathas to her JodoShinshu followers. Her music has helped herovercome her struggles in life as well as hermedical condition.

On the following day of the convention, Rev.Patricia Usuki gave the English Keynote Speech.Rev. Usuki is originally from Toronto, Canada, but

is currently a resident minister at the SanFernando Valley Hongwanji Buddhist Temple insouthern California. She was assigned to thisTemple after serving in the InternationalDepartment of the Honpa Hongwanji as aEuropean language specialist, as well as theEnglish editor for “Jodo Shinshu – A Guide”(2002). She received her Kyoshi ordination in2002 after attending Chuo Bukkyo GakuinSeminary in Kyoto and the Institute of BuddhistStudies (IBS) in Berkley, CA.

Similar to Rev. Yanase’s story, Rev. Usuki gave aspeech about “Being Embraced by the Onenessin Life”, which inspired her to become a ministerand to teach the Nembutsu. She also spoke atthe National BCA Convention in San Diego, CAthis past February. Besides enjoying thecamaraderie of old and new friends, hearing themessage of both keynote speakers were worthattending the convention in Calgary.

Workshops with themes of the Eightfold Pathwere held on Saturday afternoon in English and/or Japanese. The Passing of the WBWConvention Flag occurred during the closingceremony and it was given to the NorthernCalifornia District Temples. The next WorldBuddhist Women’s convention will be held fromAugust 30 - September 1, 2019 in San Francisco,CA at the Marriott Hotel. Especially since BCA isthe hosting district, save the date!

Introducing the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple (TSDBT) Choirby Kim Morehouse and Richard Yoshida

TSDBT Choir at a Recent Luncheon at Domo’sClock-wise from center front: Kim Morehouse, Clarynne Blanchard,Brandon Burns, Thomas Knight, Sara Downey Robinson, JunkoKimura, Alice Nishimoto, Audrey Charness, Ayako Kimura, EthelShinsato, Richard Yoshida.

Who are we? We are members of the TSDBT Sangha who love to sing. The first thing I (Kim) rememberabout our choir is how happy and welcoming the other members were when I arrived to the rehearsaland expressed interest in joining. The ladies were so warm and welcoming, I thought “This is the placefor me!” If you want to be loved, come here! At that time, it was all women – at 65, I was the youngestmember. Now, four years later, we are happy to include both younger and male members, more thandoubling our once diminishing numbers. We are a somewhat informal group but are always striving toimprove and, with the addition of some professional and trained singers, we are being guided to a morerefined sound. Formal vocal training is not required and there is no membership fee, only a love of songand a little giving of your time and singing from the heart At the present, we are building forthe future. In particular, we arepreparing to perform at the 2015Thanksgiving Interfaith Service, which is being hosted by the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple. Weare also preparing a special choirpresentation for our 100-yearAnniversary Celebration in 2016.Hopefully, these events will serveas stepping-stones to a brightfuture! We are fortunate to haveAudrey Charness as our new choirdirector, with Clarynne Blanchardas co-director. Alice Nishimotoexpertly serves us as organ player.Formal officers of the choir are infuture plans; up to this point,Junko Kimura has cared for ourtreasury. Brandan Burns hasvolunteered to transition into thatposition. We are a choir family! Thank you to the following people who preppedthe June newsletter for mailing: Judy Smith,Kay Takahashi, Mary Jane Okamatsu, MichikoKajiwara, Richard Yoshida, Mike Shibata andAlley & Yoshimi Watada. They make a seem-ingly tedious job something to look forward toevery month.

Thank you to Brian Levitt, of DBT Judo, forupdating the AED machine (which is stationedat the top of the office stairway).

July/August 2015 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 11

This Temple has staged a Cherry Blossom Festivalevery summer for the past 42 years. What may havebegun as an event to celebrate our Japanese-Americanpresence in the Denver community quickly morphedinto the Temple’s only major fund-raiser (with a themeto highlight our Japanese-American heritage). CherryBlossom Festival income sustains the Temple; it paysthe exorbitant utilities bills (gas, electricity, water/sewer, trash pick up), telephone and internetconnections, cleaning and maintenance costs. In otherwords, it provides us a place to gather, to celebrate, tolearn, to play, to reflect, to eat, to be.

Meanwhile, the physical surroundings of the Temple’sneighborhood continually transform, also. While ourhumble beginnings found us in the land of bars andpawn shops, by 1972 our initial CBFcelebration was a“block party” in conjunction with Tamai Towerapartments and Sakura Square’s collection of JAbusinesses; 2 Japanese grocers, 2 Japaneserestaurants, bookstore, travel agency, hairdresser, etc.

Now our Temple stands amid high-rise officebuildings, luxury apartment inhabitants, city-dwellerfamilies, a major league baseball stadium, bars, restaurants, shopping and over-flowing parking lots.

As we continually adjust the “flavor” of our Festival tomatch the climate of our community, we find that(internally) the “flavor” of our Sangha is changing, too;so much so, that future Cherry Blossom Festivals maybe highlighting a culture other than Japanese-American,but change is constant and that is a future article

It seems anytime we express our gratitude publicly, wealso (sadly and) simultaneously open ourselves tocriticism. But I do not wish to NOT say ‘thank you’simply to avoid reproach. So I ask you to read thefollowing acknowledgments – not for individualvalidation, but for a collective realization of how luckyeach of us is to count ourselves as as an integral pieceof such a resourceful group.

Thank you to Joni Sakaguchi, Gail Ida, Gayle Goto andWendy Thompson for pushing, pulling, lifting andmolding this year’s 2015 Cherry Blossom Festival intobeing. The Temple is quite fortunate such a work

fellow volunteers. Everyoneknows an organizationcannot survive on theefforts of a few; therefore,we need inspired leadershipto rally the membership andunite their efforts – in thiscase, to create and host asuccessful Cherry BlossomFestival!

Thank you to the spousesand families of these

individuals. It is your loveand support that allows

them to give so much tothe Temple.

Thank you to Keiko Yoshida, Randy Sasaki, Glenn &Michelle Asakawa, Gene Watada, Emiko Koga, Kaitlyn& Karen Mascher-Mace, Brian Levitt, ShirleyTsuchimoto, Brandi Tsuchimoto and Eric Sasano foryour early and sustained involvement through all ofCherry Blossom - beginning to end.

Thank you to Cal Kato, Wayne Berve and KaitlynMascher-Mace for serving as Building MaintenanceCommittee members year-round; your prep work forthe Summer season and CBF is invaluable.

Thank you to Kathy Kuge, Lorraine Hisamoto andJoanne Adair for devoting extensive time in the kitchen– before, during and after the Festival. Thank you toBWA and YBA members who were consistently andcontinually called upon for preparation, set-up andclean-up tasks.

To everyone who served as a committee Chairperson –thank you for organizing your work station andscheduling your work crew.Thank you to CaroleEshima and Linda Akiyama who quietly and efficientlyhandle all the financial matters/issues.

Thank you to DBT Judo, DBT Aikido. DBT Dancers,DBT Minyo, Denver Taiko & Denver Junior Taiko,Humu Humu Ukulele and all the other groups whoparticipated in our stage performances. Thank you toall the vendors who set up in our Marketplace. Thankyou to the Emcees, sound techs, wiring crew and go-fers.Thank you to Pacific Mercantile, Sakura Square,Jagged Mountain Brewery, JARCC and all ourneighbors who share this NoDo turf.

COLFAX MARATHON RELAY 2015by Gary Yamashita

On May 17th, in the early hours of the morning, 25 athletesrepresenting the Temple raced through the streets of Denverin the Colfax Marathon Relay. The runners in the first legs ofthe relay arrived at City Park by 5:00 AM and started the raceat 6:00 AM. These runners got to hear the pounding beat ofthe Denver Taiko drums as they ran along the Cherry CreekTrail. The five relay teams made up of runners from DBTJudo, Aikido, Denver Taiko, YBA, the Temple board and thesangha, all ran to raise funds for the Temple.

As a result of their hard work and the generous donationsof the donors that supported their efforts, approximately$9,700 was raised that will be used to paint the hondo andauditorium.

In addition, a portion of the proceeds was donated to Step13 which is a men’s residential recovery program located at20th and Larimer Street that offers its residents the opportunityto recover from addiction and become productive membersof their communities through a program that focuses on thefacets of sobriety, work and personal accountability. Theirguiding principle is that a person cannot be helped to recoverfrom their addiction until they are ready to take personalresponsibility for their past, present and future actions. GaryYamashita made the presentation of the Temple’s donationto the Executive Director of Step 13 at their facility.

Thank you to all who donated and provided support tothis great effort. The generosity of the sangha wasoverwhelming. If you have not yet donated to this campaign, you may still do so, as we are still raising additional funds topaint the front lobby. Thank you as well to Joni, Gail andGunnar for manning the Cherry Blossom Festivalinformational tent after the race in the Charity Village. A veryspecial word of appreciation goes out to all of the dedicatedrunners that trained and ran so hard for the Temple. Youguys were awesome!
