Penn State and Temple will open their seasons at Lincoln Financial Field in the renewal of this Keystone State rivalry. The Owls have found new life under head coach Matt Rhule, finishing 2014 at 6-6. Rhule, a former Penn State linebacker, hosts his alma mater for the first time and looks for a historic victory in the process. The matchup on Saturday afternoon will feature stars on both side- lines and great matchups. Last year the Nittany Lions capitalized on Owls turnovers to pull away late to a 30-13 win at Beaver Sta- dium. Junior quarterback P.J. Walker threw for 187 yards in the game, more than his counterpart, junior Christian Hackenberg, but four interceptions proved his team’s undoing. This season, Walker welcomes back Robby Anderson, who caught 44 balls for 791 yards, and nine touchdowns in 2013. Joining the receiving corps is Pittsburgh transfer and South Jersey native Adonis Jennings. The two tall targets will test the Nittany Lions secondary. When Hackenberg gets the ball, he’ll face a defense returning all 11 starters from the fourth-ranked scoring defense in FBS in 2014. Led by NCAA active tackle leaders and senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich, the Owls feature a ferocious front seven with fellow Lombardi Award watch list member Praise Martin-Oguike at defen- sive end, senior defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, and other veterans. The secondary, led by senior Tavon Young and sophomore Sean Chandler, will look to further stymie the Big 10 QB who threw for only 112 yards and two picks against the Owls last season. Coach Rhule wants to get back to the physical ground game that brought the Owls success in the past. Junior back Jahad Thomas is looking to improve upon his 1,000+ all-purpose yards last season. The Owls have multiple options to deliver body blows on the ground. Following the Penn State game, Temple will play their next three games on the road, starting with an American Athletic Conference showdown against Cincinnati. The Owls then travel to UMass and Charlotte before returning home to face Tulane on October 10th. 2015 Temple Football Schedule Date Opponent . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TV . . . .Results/Time Sat., Sept. 5 PENN STATE . . . . . . . . . . . .ESPN . . . . . .3:30pm Sat., Sept. 12 * at Cincinna . . . . . . . . . . . .ESPNews . . .8:00pm Sat., Sept. 19 at UMass . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ESPN3 . . . . .3:00pm Sat., Sept. 26 ----- BYE ----- Fri., Oct. 2 at Charloe . . . . . . . . . . . . .CBSSN . . . . .7:00pm Sat., Oct. 10 * TULANE [HC] . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Sat., Oct. 17 * UCF [BC] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Thur., Oct. 22 * at East Carolina . . . . . . . . .ESPN2 . . . . .7:00pm Sat., Oct. 31 NOTRE DAME . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Fri., Nov. 6 * at SMU . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ESPN2 . . . . .8:00pm Sat., Nov. 14 * at USF . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Sat., Nov. 21 * MEMPHIS . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Sat., Nov. 28 * UCONN . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .TBD . . . . . . . . . .TBD Sat., Dec. 5 * The American Championship ABC/ESPN12:00pm Home games in CHERRY * American Athletic Conference games . . . . . #WETHET2015 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TUDIAMONDS.COM OWLSPORTS.COM

BIG GAMES AGAINST THE BIG TENLast year’s 30-13 loss at Happy Valley was a tough blow to the team butthere were individuals who shined. Linebacker Tyler Matakevich had a 47-yard interception return to terminate Penn State’s opening drive of the sec-ond half and set up a game-tying field goal. Tavon Young snuffed outanother Nittany Lion march with a 25-yard pick return. P.J. Walker foundJalen Fitzpatrick on a 75-yard bomb to match a Penn State score and keepit a one-possession game. The defense pestered Christian Hackenburg allafternoon, limiting him to 112 yards in the game and a 67.0 pass efficiencyrating, his lowest of the season. In 2012, Kyle Friend made his first startfor the Owls at right guard, beginning a 33-game streak that is the longestactive on the team.

THE TIES THAT BINDBoth head coaches have ties to the other’s area. Matt Rhule moved toState College as a teenager and played four years at Penn State, earninghis bachelor’s degree in 1997. James Franklin grew up in Langhorne andgraduated from Neshaminy High. Defensive line coach Elijah Robinsonand strength and conditioning coach Jeremy Scott each have served inroles at Happy Valley. Robinson played at Penn State and worked therefrom 2008-12, helping four Nittany Lions go in the top 3 rounds of the draft.Scott spent over a decade in Happy Valley, working with two Big Ten cham-pion teams and ten first-round picks, including the first and second overallpicks in 2000, Courtney Brown and Lavar Arrington.

CROSSOVER CONNECTIONSPenn State’s defensive backs coach Terry M. Smith makes his return toPhiladelphia where he was Matt Rhule’s receivers coach in 2013. The pro-gram set a new passing yards record of 2,996 with Smith on board andtied the single-season mark with 23 touchdowns. Robby Anderson brokethe single-game record with 239 yards against SMU that season. Beforehis time at Temple, Smith was a successful coach at Gateway High Schoolin the Pittsburgh area. There he coached sophomore defensive back An-thony Davis and freshmen defensive back Delvon Randall.

BIG 33 ALUMPennsylvania hosts the annual Big 33 game, a showcase event for highschool football, playing against all-star teams from neighboring states, mostrecently against Maryland. In 2012, senior fullback Michael Felton, seniorcenter Kyle Friend, and junior offensive lineman Kiser Terry suited up forthe PA squad. Redshirt sophomore lineman Brian Carter was named to thePennsylvania team in 2013. Sophomore defensive back Anthony Davissuited up in 2014 as well.

TEMPLE VS. THE BIG TENOutside of Penn State, Temple hasn’t played many games against Big 10foes. However, the program has seen success against members of theconference. Rutgers is the FBS program Temple has defeated the most, with 15 victories since the rivalry began in 1948. The Owls last defeated aBig 10 team in 1990 when Jerry Berndt’s team upset the Wisconsin Badg-ers 24-18 in Madison.

THE WISE OWLSTemple will have four student-athletes who have already completed theirundergraduate degrees on the team this season. They are wide receiverJohn Christopher (kinesiology), defensive lineman Brandon Chudnoff (ki-nesiology), defensive back Will Hayes (criminal justice), and defensive line-man Hershey Walton (advertising). Twenty-three other student-athletesexpect to have their degrees by December

THE QB HISTORYHere are the stats from the game last year, and the past two seasons, be-tween Temple’s P.J. Walker and Penn State Christian Hackenburg.

RETURNS ON INVESTMENTLast season was a big year for Temple’s defense. Not only did the unitallow the fourth-fewest points per game (17.5) in FBS, the team cameup with five touchdowns of their own from interception and fumble re-turns. Tavon Young and Sharif Finch each brought back a fumble andINT for a score. Averee Robinson had a 55-yard fumble return for atouchdown. Added to two punt returns and one punt block return, theeight non-offensive TDs equaled the Owls’ amount for the four previousseasons combined.

TEMPLE’S TUFF GUYSWearing a single-digit jersey is considered to be one of the highest hon-ors an Owl can earn. These are awarded to the student-athletes deemedby their teammates to be the toughest members of the team. Seven ofthese carried over from last season but two spots were open followinggraduation. Jersey #4 has been awarded to redshirt sophomore line-backer Nick Sharga, while #5 went to junior running back Jahad Thomas, just the second offensive player on this list. Here is the complete list ofTemple’s TUFF Guys

EYES ON THE POSTSEASON AWARDSSix Owls have made it to the preseason watch lists of nine differentawards. Senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich has four nominations, topsamong all American Athletic Conference defenders. Senior center KyleFriend is one of two centers in the conference to earn watch lists for theRimington (top center) and the Rotary Lombardi Award (top lineman).Temple also has the only conference offensive backfield with a runningback (Jahad Thomas; Doak Walker Award, Hornung Award) and quar-terback (PJ Walker; Manning Award) earning spots on preseason watchlists.

OFFSEASON SUPERSTARSStrength and conditioning coach Jeremy Scott put the Owls through arigorous offseason training program this summer. However, the student-athletes responded well. Every week, players who exceeded expecta-tions earned the TUFB Elite honor. Leading the offense was senior centerKyle Friend with 8 weeks of TUFB Elite status, while the defense waspaced by senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich with 7 awards.

RETURN OF THE MATSenior LB Tyler Matakevich returns to lead a tenacious and experienced de-fense in 2015. The tackling machine will look to etch his name into historywith his fourth season of 100 tackles or more. He leads the American de-fensive players with four preseason award watch lists. The unit will look tobuild on last year’s efforts and dominate the American. In 2014, they finishedtop 5 in the American in ten team defensive categories, along with top-5 na-tionally in scoring defense.

MOVING ON UP TO THE EAST SIDETemple will start 2015 in the newly formed AAC East Division as the confer-ence expands to 12 teams. Division rivals include UCF, Cincinnati, UConn,East Carolina, and USF. Navy joins the American for football and will contendin the West with Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa. In the eight-game conference, each team will play three teams out of division in a home-away series, allowing everyone to face off twice every four years.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!After splitting the conference title in the first two seasons, the American willcrown a winner December 5th at noon in the inaugural conference champi-onship game. East meets West to prove the best at the home of the betterrecord. The winner stands a good chance to earn the automatic bid to theNew Year’s Six games for the Group of Five conferences.

KEEP WALKINGJunior QB P.J. Walker will return to guide a potent Temple offense. He entersthe season with 19 consecutive starts under center and familiar targets. He’lllook to improve on last year’s 2,317 yards and 13 touchdowns. His experi-ence can help the offense soar to new heights and his inclusion on the Man-ning Award preseason watch list shows he won’t fly under the radar. Teamsshould also watch his feet, after Walker’s 17 10+ yard runs in 2014.

SAVE THE CUPCAKES FOR DESSERTTemple faces a challenging non-conference schedule, as home datesagainst Penn State and Notre Dame should fill the Linc, while road gamesagainst UMass and Charlotte will test their resolve. One thing notably miss-ing this year is a FCS opponent. The Owls and Tulsa are the only Americanteams to play exclusively FBS opponents this season. That could help withplayoff rankings for the bowls.

PRAISE THE EFFORTTemple’s front seven on defense brought immense pressure last year andstymied opponents. Not only did the Owls lead the conference in scoringdefense and pass defense, they led in fumbles recovered, while finishingfourth in sacks and tackles for loss. Praise Martin-Oguike led the charge, finishing fourth in FBS in forced fumbles/game (0.42) and in the top 50 with0.62 sacks/game. His efforts and the returning strength of the unit placedhim on the Lombardi Award watch list with Tyler Matakevich. He also helpedTemple block eight kicks and punts last year, tied for second nationally withOklahoma State, behind only Nebraska.

NIGHT OWLSFor a school founded on evening education and advancement, it seems ap-propriate that the Owls will play at least four games in primetime this season. They’ll open American play under the lights at Cincinnati before weeknightmatch-ups against Charlotte, East Carolina, and SMU. Times are up in theair for five of the home games. Those high-profile games could add evenmore primetime exposure for Temple football.

NO DOUBTING THOMASOne beneficiary of the cohesive offensive line will be junior RB JahadThomas. Last year, he averaged 4.8 yards per rush and an astounding 26.0yards per catch. His familiarity with QB P.J. Walker who won a sectional titlewith him at Elizabeth HS in New Jersey should increase the electric potencyof the big-play threat. Last season Thomas had seven 10+ yards runs, four20+ yards receptions, along with his kickoff returns that put him over 1,000all-purpose yards for 2014.

KICKING INTO HIGH GEARLast season was another strong year for Temple’s special teams despite itsyouth. Sophomore Austin Jones didn’t miss a PAT last year, connecting onall 30 while hitting 13-22 field goals for 69 points, good for tenth in theleague. Fellow sophomore Alex Starzyk dropped 17 of 70 punts inside theopponents’ 20 with 26 fair catches. Junior Jim Cooper kept all 60 kickoffsthis year for the Owls in play, avoiding out-of-bounds penalties that give op-ponents advantageous field position, to go with 12 touchbacks. Returningthree experienced feet will give the Owls confidence in their special teamsthat can decide a game, especially late in the season.

RHULER OF THE NESTTemple HC Matt Rhule starts his third season at the helm and his ninth over-all with the Owls program. Last season the team improved to 6-6 and im-proved scoring defense in the 4th quarter. Rhule spent six seasons(2006-11) working under Al Golden, helping to guide the Owls to two bowlgames and transition from the Mid-American to the Big East, now the Amer-ican. His recruiting acumen could be partly attributed to being the ninth-youngest head coach in FBS this season. He’ll face his alma mater PennState in the season opener at the Linc.

#WETHET2015 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TUDIAMONDS.COM OWLSPORTS.COM

QuarterbacksThis season Temple’s quarterbacks will be led by Glenn Thomas, the quar-terback coach who was hired after a seven year term with the Atlanta Fal-cons.

With 19 career starts, junior P.J. Walker is the in-cumbent leader among the team’s quarterbacks. Walkerearned the starting QB position midway through his freshmanseason and has not looked back. That season he threw for200+ yards and at least one touchdown in all seven starts andchallenged the all-time Temple passing marks with 2,084yards and 20 TDs. In 2014, he started strong, leading Templeto a 4-1 record while throwing for 1,099 yards and nine TDsin the first five games. He finished the year with 2,317 yards and 13 TDs.

Following the loss of Connor Reilly to graduation, Tim DiGiorgiois the only other quarterback with any game experience. The redshirt soph-omore saw mop-up duty in two early 2014 wins at Vanderbilt and vs.Delaware State.

Redshirt junior transfer John Loughery adds some collegiate ex-perience to the mix after playing for Elon College from 2013-14. The Wayne,Pa. native and William Penn Charter product played in 10 games and com-pleted 55 of 58 passes for 284 yards for the Phoenix. He is the cousin ofFalcons all-pro QB Matt Ryan who was tutored by Thomas in Atlanta.

Frank Nutile was part of the 2014 recruiting class and redshirtedlast season. He suffered a torn ACL during the first week of camp and islooking forward to a return to the field.

Logan Marchi was part of the 2015 recruiting class and enrolledat Temple this past January. He was able to participate in drills last summerand was impressive during that brief stint.

Wide ReceiversFrisman Jackson, a six-year NFL wide receiver and seven-year collegecoach, begins his first season as Temple’s wide receivers coach.

Jackson inherits a talented group that is very raw. Gone is theleading receiver from a year ago. Jalen Fitzpatrick, who also was the team’sleading receiver in 2012, grad-uated.

However, the re-ceiver corps got an added joltthis summer when the Owlsadded redshirt-senior RobbyAnderson and sophomoretransfer Adonis Jennings.Anderson was Temple’s leading receiver in 2013 but was ineligible in 2014.After rejoining the team in September that season, Anderson eventuallymoved into the starting lineup and hauled in 34 passes for 657 yards and 9TDs in the season’s final five games.

Jennings, who had 6 catches for 55 yards as a true freshman atPitt last year, is eligible to play this season.

John Christopher returns as the experienced veteran of thegroup. The redshirt senior and three-time letterwinner has played in 35games as an Owl (tied for the most on the team). His 20 starts are morethan all the other wide receivers combined.

One of the most improved players this spring was Samuel Ben-jamin. The redshirt junior has shuttled between receiver and defensive backsince injuring his shoulder making a catch in the 2013 season opener. Lastseason he fought his way on to the field and blocked two punts that wereboth recovered for TDs.

Brandon Shippen started nine games a year ago after makingthe conversion from defensive back. He scored a 35-yard touchdown on hisfirst catch in the season opener.

Romond Deloatch, a redshirt junior, is a big receiver who hasthrived on the fade pattern in the end zone resulting in three touchdowns in2014.

Two players who saw increased action as the 2014 season pro-gressed were Keith Kirkwood and Brodrick Yancy. Kirkwood was a trans-fer from Hawaii who was granted a hardship waiver allowing him to play bythe fifth game of the season. Yancy was part of the 2014 recruiting class. He made 6 catches for 35 yards, all in the final four games.

One of the most gifted athletes on the team (fastest 40 time andhighest vertical jump), Derrek Thomas was in and out of the lineup as hedevelops as a receiver.

Ventell Bryant and Matt Eaton, two members of the 2014 recruit-

ing class, redshirted. Bryant was one of the most improved players in thespring and earend a starting receiver role in the spring game.

Redshirt junior Rob Heyen continues to develop. He saw his firstcollegiate action in a 59-0 victory over Delaware State. Sophomores TomBradway and Marshall Ellick redshirted.

The 2015 class brought Cortrelle Simpson (Lackey/Indian Head,Md.). Sophomore Willie Smith III (Eagles View Academy/Jacksonville, Fla.)transferred from Seton Hill. Corey Gaarn (Cloister, N.J./Bergen Catholic) isa freshman walk-on.

Tight Ends & FULLBACKSAssistant head coach Ed Foley will tutor the tight ends and fullbacks for thethird straight year. This season, he will also add special teams coordinatorto his duties.

For the first time, however, Foley will enter a sea-son returning some experience. In 2013, Foley was convert-ing former quarterback Chris Coyer into a tight end. After thesenior departed, Foley was left with few experienced players.

Colin Thompson, who transferred from Florida in2014 after two seasons sidelined with a foot injury, played innine games a year ago. He was slowly eased into the lineupafter proper rehabilitation of his foot and learning the playbook. He will ben-efit from an entire offseason immersed in the Temple program.

Redshirt senior Saledeem Major was used last season in multipletight end sets. Redshirt sophomore Cole Boozer saw limited action as hecontinues to develop and get stronger. Last season, quarterback ThomasRumer made the switch to tight end. He continues to develop. Walk onChris Myarick was impressive on the scout team. Kip Patton was a 2014recruit who spent the season redshirting and working with the defensive line.

The 2015 recruiting class introduces Patrick Anderson(Aliquippa/Aliquippa, Pa.), Roy Pugh (Shabazz/South Orange, N.J.) andJake Robinson (Haddonfield Memorial/Haddonfield, N.J.). Two newcomersare walkons Alex Carling (North Pocono High/Moscow, Pa.) and DomenicNigrelli (Valley Forge/Wayne, Pa).

Eric Neefe is the only returning fullback. He spent the past twoseasons on the scout team. He will be joined this year by senior MichaelFelton, sophomore Rob Ritrovato and walk-on freshman Daiqwon Buck-ley. Felton is a three-year letterwinner who played outside linebacker andhas been a core special teams performer. Ritrovato was also a linebakerand played on special teams last season. Buckley (Dunmore, Pa. / Dun-more) is a bruising runner who enrolled at Temple after spending last seasonat Salisbury.

Running BacksThis season the running backs will be guided by offensive coordinator Mar-cus Satterfield. Satterfield spent the past two seasons working with the quar-terbacks while coordinating the offense.

Gone from the stable of running backs is KennethHarper, the workhorse back over the past two seasons. Lastyear’s leading ground gainer, Jahad Thomas, however, re-turns. Thomas, who made the transition from defensive backto running back, was explosive averaging 7.9 yards per touchfrom scrimmage. He gained 384 yards on 80 carries andadded 364 yards on 14 receptions.

David Hood was 8-62 rushing in a lopsided win over DelawareState in his only action as a freshman.

A strong 2015 Temple recruiting class was highlighted by threerunning backs. Four-star RB T.J. Simmons (Lakeland Christian/Lakeland,Fla.) turned down an offer to UCLA to come to North Broad Street. He wasranked by Rivals.com as the #17 running back in the nation. Jager Gardner(Owen/Black Mountain, N.C.) holds the Western North Carolina record with6,955 career rushing yards. Ryquell Armstead (Millville/Millville, N.J.) re-minds Temple coaches of former Owl Bernard Pierce. He rushed for 1,488yards and 18 TDs as a senior.

Roy Wesley, was a part of the scout team a year ago and addsdepth.

Offensive LineWith Chris Wiesehan beginning his second season as offensive line coach, the Owls will have consistency in the O-line for the first time since 2012.That’s good news for senior Kyle Friend who had three different positioncoaches in his first three seasons. Wiesehan’s methods paid dividends forFriend who earned all-conference honors a year ago. One of the strongest

(benches 225-lbs. 46 times) and quickest (4.95 / 40) linemen in the NCAA,the center leads all current Owls in consecutive games played (35) and con-secutive starts (33).

Junior Dion Dawkins mans the left tackle position protecting theQB’s blindside. He suffered an ankle injury last season in game 5 leadingthe Owls to a 4-1 start. While he missed just one game, he played on the in-jured ankle for most of the season.

Three players - Shahbaz Ahmed, Eric Lofton and Brendan Mc-Gowan - held down the other starting jobs a year ago. After switching fromthe defensive line in the spring and adding 30 pounds, Ahmed started eightgames at left guard. An ankle injury held him out of three games late in theseason. After limited action in his first three years, Lofton started every gameat right tackle. McGowan started the first eight games at right guard andmoved to the left side after Ahmed was sidelined. All will be challenged byemerging talent.

Last season as a redshirt freshman, Brian Carter bounced be-tween defensive and offensive line. In fact, he started at defensive tackle atUCF and started at right guard two weeks later vs. East Carolina. One ofthe strongest players on the team, he is expected to find a home on the of-fensive side of the ball this season.

The Owls are hoping to have similar results with redshirt juniorJulio Derosier and junior Kiser Terry. After spending the 2014 season onthe defensive line, both were switched to offensive line this spring.

Developing talent and depth on the offensive line has been a mis-sion of Matt Rhule’s since taking the head coaching position two years ago.His 2013 recruiting class of Leon Johnson, Samaj Reed and Adrian Sul-livan continue to develop and each saw spot action last year. The 2014 classof James McHale, Jaelin Robinson and Aaron Ruff all redshirted a yearago. Each has benefited from an additional year in the weight room and areready to challenge for playing time. The 2015 class of Jovahn Fair and Ben-son Israel have the talent to play right away but summer camp will dictatehow quickly they see game action.

The Philadelphia area produced two walkons in 2014 for Temple- Nick Apostolu (Springfield/Springfield, Pa.), and Gordon Thomas(Imhotep) - and both have continued to grow and develop. Joseph Woerner(Wycoff, N.J./Bergen Catholic) is a freshman walk-on.

Defensive LineElijah Robinson, one of the brightest young coaches in the country, returnsfor his second season to lead the Owls’ defensive line.

The unit is deep especially on theinside. Seniors Matt Ioannidis and HersheyWalton lead the way and should once againbe among the best in the conference. Ioanni-dis led the team last season with 11.0 tacklesfor loss and had a career-high and D-lineleading 47 tackles. Walton has started 20games in the past three seasons and has never missed a game.

Averee Robinson was part of last year’s rotation and helped setthe tone for the season with two fumble recoveries in the season opener, in-cluding one he returned 55-yards for a touchdown. He has switched his num-ber to 43 this season to honor his deceased brother Adrian who was a starat Temple from 2009-11 adn played in the NFL for three seasons.

Adding to the mix this season will be Freddie Booth-Lloyd andMichael Dogbe, who joined Temple in 2014 and redshirted.

Praise Martin-Oguike returned to the team after a two year ab-sence and became a dominant force. He accumulated all 7.5 of his sacks inthe final nine games and earned numerous player of the week honors aftera 1.5 sack, 3.5 TFL, 3 forced fumble performance when Temple knocked off#21/19 East Carolina.

Moving back to defnsive end is red-shirt-senior Nate D. Smith who has mannedthe middle for most of the past three seasons.Smith has averaged over 70 tackles but hashad a knack for the big play with six forcedfumbles, three recoveries, one interceptionsand 6.5 sacks.

Another player making his share of big plays was Sharif Finch.

In the season’s first three games, he had one sack, 3.5 TFLs, one forcedfumble that he recovered for a touchdown and an interception that he re-turned 65-yards for another score.

Brandon Chudnoff, Avery Ellis, Jacob Martin and HaasonReddick all saw action throughout most of the season in the rotation at end.

Julian Taylor saw limited repetitions in 2014 and continues to de-velop.

Redshirt-sophomore Jordan Jones sat out last year after trans-ferring from East Stroudsberg. He was converted from offensive line to de-fensive line this spring.

The 2015 recruiting class adds Josiah Bronson (Kentwood/Cov-ington, Wash.), DeAndre Kelly (DeMatha/Hyattsville, Md.), and DanaLevine (Hallandale/Hallandale, Fla.). Jeremy Reichnor (West PhiladelphiaCatholic/Philadelphia, Pa) is a walk-on freshman.

LinebackersMike Siravo is now in his third straight year and his second term with Temple.Besides leading the linebackers, Siravo has been responsible for recruitingfor the past two seasons for which Temple has received high marks.

For the first time in recent history, Temple enters the season witha legitimate All-America defensive candidate. WLB Tyler Matakevich hasled the Owls in tackles in eachof his three seasons, eclipsingthe 100-tackle plateau eachyear. As such, he joins SteveConjar and Joe Klecko as theonly Temple players to reachthat mark three times. In fact,Matakevich’s 355 career tackles is the most of any current NCAA player andhe’s the only one with more than 300 to his credit.

The linebacking corp returns three other players who have startedat some point in the last two seasons.

One of the leaders on the team is Avery Williams. After movingfrom running back to defensive back, he finally found a home at linebackerand emerged as the starting SLB last year.

The most versatile player in the group is Stephaun Marshall. After making the conversion from safety, Marshall became the primarybackup at all three linebacker positions and made five starts (3 at SLB and2 at WLB).

Jarred Alwan is a tough, intelligent player who has started sixgames at MLB in his two seasons at Temple.

Nick Sharga, a transfer from West Virginia-Wesleyan, redshirtedlast year and has seen action at linebacker and defensive line. Jared Folksand Zack Mesday both redshirted and will benefit from a year of develop-ment. Converted running back Zaire Williams brings his athleticism to thegroup.

The 2015 recruiting class was strong on linebackers as the Owlsadded Chapelle Russell (Lakewood/Lakewood, N.J.), Daishaun Grimes(Harmony/St. Cloud, Fla.), and William Updegrove (Berwick Area/Berwick,Pa.)

Joining the squad as walkons in 2015 are: Mike DiFrancesco(Neumann-Goretti/Philadelphia, Pa), and Todd Jones (St. Joe’sPrep/Philadelphia). Yensi Uribe-Martinez (Wilson/West Lawn, Pa) transfersfrom Kutztown.

Defensive BacksThis unit, which made the biggest strides in 2014, is headed by defensivecoordinator Phil Snow and defensive backcoach Fran Brown. Snow concentrates on thesafeties and Brown on the corners.

Three-year letterwinner TavonYoung is the most experienced and also hasproven to be the biggest playmaker. In thepast three seasons, he has accounted forseven of Temple’s 16 interceptions. In 2014, he had four picks, returned onefor a 93-yard TD, and added a fumble return for a 63-yard score.

Sean Chandler made people take notice from the time he walkedon campus. As a true freshman, he earned the starting corner spot and wasvoted by his teammates to wear a single-digit jersey (give to the toughestmembers of the team). He didn’t allow a single touchdown until the 11thgame of the season and was a major reason why the team shaved 100-yards off its average of passing yards allowed per game from the previousyear.

The team has high expectations for 2015 recruit Kareem Ali. Aliwas a four-star selection out of Timber Creek High (Sicklerville, N.J.) and

was a January enrollee at Temple. Redshirt junior Nate Hairston, who has played at wide receiver,

has made the switch to defensive back.Anthony Davis, Artrel Foster, Cequan Jefferson, and Khiry

Lucas all had a chance to see action at corner last season. Davis, Jeffersonand Lucas all suffered injuries and were limited in the spring. Joining themat cornerback is walk-on freshman EriqFadahundsi (Indian Head, Md./Lackey).

At safety two starters return, eachof whom started more than half the games lastseason. Alex Wells, a JUCO transfer, startedthe season at free safety but missed threegames due to injury. He was the team’s fourthleading tackler with 51 stops. Will Hayes (7starts; 45 tackles) was not opening day starter but played well at FS and SSwhen called upon.

Boye Aromire earned the opening day start at SS but an injuredback limited his repetitions throughout the season.

Those early injuries opened the door for Nate L. Smith whoshowed considerable improvement during camp. An ankle injury of his ownin the season opener limited his action.

Jyquis Thomas, a 2014 recruit, redshirted last season but earnedthe most improved defensive player award in the spring. Walk-on Jarrid Sat-

terfield adds depth.Added to the mix are 2015 recruit Jeremiah Atoki (Vineland

South/Vineland, N.J.), 2014 recruit Delvon Randall (Gateway/Monroeville,Pa.) who spent last fall at East Coast Academy.

SpecialistsAfter a disastrous 2013 season, the kicking game madestrides in 2014 thanks in part to three true freshmen walkons.Austin Jones led the team with 69 points. He was perfect on30 PATs and was 13-22 on field goals. Alex Starzyk show-cased a powerful punting leg with a 38.4-yard average. Al-though inconsistent, his best game came in a victory over#21/19 East Carolina when he nailed five of nine punts insidethe 20 in a rain-soaked field position battle. Both kickers ben-efited from long snapper Corey Lerch who won an open bat-tle among five long snappers - Josh Lang will serve as thebackup.

Junior kicker Jim Cooper handled kickoff duties.Unbroken by a difficult freshman season, Cooper doubled histouchbacks a year ago while adding an average of threeyards to his kickoffs.

Redshirt senior Tyler Mayes is the jack-of-all-trades who providesdepth at kicker, punter and long snapper.

#WETHET2015 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TUDIAMONDS.COM OWLSPORTS.COM

On December 17, 2012, Matt Rhule (pronounced RULE)returned to North Broad Street to take the helm as head coachof the Temple Owls. Following six seasons as one of AlGolden’s top assistants, he joined the New York Giants as theassistant offensive line coach in 2012. He is now in his thirdyear as the 26th Owls head coach and ninth on the Templecampus.

Prior to the start of his first season in charge he offeredthat his squad would produce an exciting brand of football andthey would improve as the season progressed. Rhule deliveredon those promises as the 2013 Owls produced nearly 400yards per game of offense (the second best total in school his-tory). Despite an 0-6 start to the season, the troops never sur-rendered and the team never trailed at the start of the fourthquarter in the second half of the season. The mission in the2014 offseason was to learn how to finish out games.

They did just that, allowing only 23 4th quarter pointsin all of 2014. That adjustment, and the overall improved playof the defense, helped the Owls to a 6-6 record.

On June 25, 2015, Rhule was rewarded with a four-yearcontract extension that will keep him on the Temple sidelinesthrough the 2021 season. Temple’s Director of Athletics Dr.Patrick Kraft announced, “Matt Rhule is one of the best youngcoaches in college football and we are excited that he will beat the helm of Temple Football through at least 2021. Matt hasthe program heading in the right direction, especially as weenter a very promising season on the gridiron, and we are con-fident that he is the right person to take the program to evengreater heights."

The State College, PA, native, a former player at PennState, has 17 years of collegiate coaching experience, includingeight seasons at Temple, and six bowl games -- two with theOwls -- on his resume.

Rhule joined the Giants in the spring of 2012. Heworked closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the offensiveline coach since 2004. They finished the 2012 campaign at 9-7, second in the NFC East, and averaged 355 yards of offenseper game. Four New York players, including guard Chris Snee, were selected to the Pro Bowl.

During his previous tenure at Temple, Rhule’s rolechanged several times. In spring 2012, he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator after serving as the assistant offensivecoordinator and tight ends coach as well as the recruiting co-ordinator under Steve Addazio in 2011. Temple’s 2012 recruit-ing class was ranked #1 in the Mid-American Conference andhelped lay the foundation for the program's transition to theBig East Conference.

Under Al Golden, Rhule was promoted to offensive co-ordinator in the spring of 2008. He also coached the TU quar-terbacks. He coached the defensive line in 2006 and served asthe quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator during the2006 and 2007 seasons. For three consecutive years, Temple’srecruiting class was ranked #1 in the MAC [2006, 2007, 2008].

In 2011, the Owls went 9-4 and played in the fourthbowl game in school history, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, where they crushed Wyoming, 37-15 – Temple’s first postsea-son victory since the 1979 Garden State Bowl. Rhule men-tored two-time first-team All-MAC selection TE EvanRodriguez. For the second time in Rhule’s tenure, the Owls setthe Temple single-season rushing yardage record and rushingtouchdowns records behind the explosive efforts of All-MACjunior running backs Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.

In 2010, Rhule helped guide the team to an 8-4 regular-season record, and the Owls recorded back-to-back winningseasons for the first time since 1978-79, including their firstwin over a BCS team. The Owls recorded the largest margin ofvictory (42 points against Buffalo) in a MAC game. A schoolrecord six offensive players earned All-MAC honors, includingrepeat first-team honorees OL Colin Madison, OL Darius Mor-ris, and RB Bernard Pierce as well as first-time honoree TE EvanRodriguez.

In 2009, Rhule’s offense helped TU win a single-seasonrecord nine consecutive games en route to a 9-4 overall recordand first-place tie in the MAC East. Under Rhule’s guidance, the Owls set the Temple single-season rushing yardage record.A school record five offensive players were named All-MAC,

including three on the first team. All-American Bernard Piercerushed his way into the Temple record book, re-writing allrecords for a rookie en route to 2009 MAC Freshman of theYear honors.

In 2008, Rhule took the reins as offensive coordinator, helping the Owls to their most wins in nearly two decades. The Owls outscored their opponents for the season for thefirst time since 1990. Rhule coached All-MAC honorees C AlexDerenthal and school record holder WR Bruce Francis, whileQB Adam DiMichele set the school record for passing touch-downs with six in the 55-52 win over Eastern Michigan. Francisset the school records for career receiving TDs (23) and con-secutive games with a reception (38).

Rhule arrived in Owl Country after spending four sea-sons as an assistant coach at Western Carolina, including threeas assistant head coach.

From 2002 to 2005, Rhule was an assistant at WesternCarolina under head coach Kent Briggs, serving as assistanthead coach during his last three seasons. In 2005, he was of-fensive line coach and run game coordinator after directingthe linebackers his first three years. Rhule was special teamscoordinator during his tenure in Cullowhee (NC). In 2005, theCatamounts led Division I-AA in kickoff returns, averaging27.44 yards per return. Sophomore Mike Malone earned firstteam All-Southern Conference honors with a 31.29 yards perkickoff return average, ranking second nationally. Two offen-sive linemen and the team’s punter captured second team all-league accolades.

In 2004, WCU ranked 12th nationally in total defenseand 15th in pass defense, largely due to the production ofRhule’s linebacker corps. The team’s top five tacklers werelinebackers in its eight man front scheme. In 2003, the Cata-mounts led the SoCon in rush defense for the first time inschool history.

Rhule arrived at Western Carolina after serving as assis-tant defensive line coach at UCLA in 2001. He assisted incoaching five Bruins that earned All PAC-10 honors as the teamposted a 7-4 record under head coach Bob Toledo.

From 1999 to 2000, Rhule served as an assistant coachat Mid-American Conference member Buffalo, directing theBulls defensive line in 2000 and working as assistant defensiveline coach in 1999. In 2000, the team’s sack total increasedfrom 12 to 27 utilizing a 3-4 alignment. Buffalo also earned itsfirst two Division I-A victories that season.

Rhule began his coaching career as a volunteer assistantat Penn State in the spring of 1998 before working at AlbrightCollege in Reading, PA for the 1998 season. At Albright, hecoached the linebackers in a 4-3 scheme and recruited west-ern and central Pennsylvania.

Rhule played four seasons at linebacker with the NittanyLions under Joe Paterno. A three-time Penn State Scholar-Ath-lete, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1997. He re-ceived his undergraduate degree in political science beforeearning his master’s degree in educational psychology fromBuffalo in 2003.
