If the footnote is to be retained, the TPPT is the group of experts charged by the IPPC to analysis and recommend treatments and as such they should be requested to note in their report (where treatments are recommended to the SC and CPM for adoption) if there are any known adverse quality effects (based on published information) from applying the treatment in accordance with the recommended treatment schedule.

Para 40, 54 and 68 contain schedules based on the same number of days, cultivars and references, without significant differences in efficacy. It isn’t understandable why the less exigent schedule in terms of temperature has not been the only one selected.

Also the existence of different temperatures creates an inconsistency with the end of the last sentence in these para ( “The commodity temperature…. and should not exceed the stated level.”)

In cases in which a species is a fruit flies host, it is considered as not necessary to develop an efficiency trial for its different varieties or cultivars. This is shown with the examples that are included in the previously mentioned paragraphs, in which there is no statistically significant difference in levels of efficacy of treatments on cultivars.

The current proposal seems to be too restrictive in terms of the schedules included therein. In our view, the number of schedules should be expanded to include others that achieve sufficient efficacy with shorter treatment periods, which are successfully used in international trade. A possible broader choice of schedules would allow for more flexible applicability of the cold treatments as well as enhancing their practical use.

EC apologizes for not having submitted suitable cold treatments under the respective call in 2007. It is noted, however, that only a few of the cold treatments for fruit currently commercially in use have been submitted.
