IamatthefirstrehearsalofThe TempestasIwritetoyouandIamstruckbythis:Mysenses have been pummeled by cutbacks, layoffs, reductions, contractions. As if wewereinastageofhumancompression—howcanwemakeourselvessmallerthanweare?That’sthemessageoureconomy,ourgovernment,andourmediaaretellingus.AtleastthatiswhatIamhearing.

Andyet,asIsitintherehearsalroom,withanintrepidgroupofartistswhohaveenduredacutbacktotheirrehearsaltime,Iwitnessnosignofcontraction—onlytheexpansionthatcomeswithcreation.Theopenhearts,enthusiasm,andsenseofpurposeisvisibleonthefacesofallintheroom.

AndIfindmyselfgettingabitemotional.Onceagain,it’stheartists,underpaidandoftenunder-classed,marchingforwardagainstAgincourt-likeeconomicoddstocontinuetocreate,toexpandourspirits,toserve.

Italmostwouldn’tmatterwhichofShakespeare’splaysweweredoingatthisspecialtimeoftransition—theyallofferwhatweneed,butthereisaserendipitoustimelinesstoexploringThe Tempestrightnow.

We,asasociety,thougheverevolving,arewakingupaswetransitionintooureconomicrealities.Wearelearningtoletgooftheexpectationswemighthavehadforourfutures.Wearelearningtoletgoofwhatweoncethoughtwasnecessaryforourexistence.Weareopeningourselvestoanewexperienceasweletgoofthesethings. Itmaylookbleak,itmaybeemotionallybatteringandintellectuallyconfusing,butwearewakingup.Andawarenessisastatethatisspirituallymandatedforgrowth.

The Tempest isabout transitiontoo.And lettinggo.Andultimate forgivenesssoonemay move on. And moving on is what our species does best. We are flexible, notwithoutpain,butit’sinourmusculaturetobendandgrow.Always,thereishope.The Tempestpresentsuswithshiningthoughtsabouteachotherandhowweliveourlivesininterconnectedness.Mirandasays:

O, wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here!How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,That has such people in it.

Justas lifehasan imperativetopropagate itself,creative inspirationalsohasaneedtoflourishandtravelfrompersontoperson.Liketheoldfilmsinbiologyclassofcellsdividingandmultiplyinguntiltheyfilltheslideofthemicroscope,acreativeinspirationcanspreadfrompersontoperson,dividing,multiplyingandtransformingasitgrows.

WhenIbeganworkingonThe Tempest,IhappenedonaphotobyfashionphotographerTimWalker.Isawitandfeltanintakeofbreath.Aninspiration.Uptothatmoment,Ihadseverallooseideasabouttheplay,buttheimageofalonewomaninamurkywhitelandscapeofsailingtacklecrystallizedeverything.Soonmoreimagesandideasmixedwithphilosophyandmythologystartingfloodingin.

Thenlikewildfiretheideaspassedthroughoutthecreativeteam.ThedayImetmusiciansJesseSykesandPhilWandscher,Ishowedthemthephotoandsharedtheideasithadinspired.Isawtheintakeofbreathandthewideningoftheeyes.Theyhadbeeninspired.IemailedMichaelWinterstheimagesIhadcollectedandsharedwhatitallmeanttome.Withinacoupledayshewasemailingmebackwithfreshinspirationsofhisown.SoonotheractorsanddesignerslikeL.B.MorseandDorisBlackwereactivelyengagedinsharing ideasand fuelingeachothers’creative impulses.Evenourhousemanager,SusannaPugh,leftapictureonmydeskfromamagazinethathadinspiredherwithideasaboutThe Tempest.Ourentirecompanyhadbeencaughtupinacollectivecirculationofbreaththatcreatedlifeateveryinspiration.Bythetimefirstrehearsalcamewehadawallfullofinspiringimagesandaroomfullofinspiredperformers.

We want to take a moment to celebrate two wonderful occurrences at SeattleShakespeare, our Audience Giving Campaign during The Merchant of Venice andthisyear’sBill’sBirthdayBash.

DuringourproductionofThe Merchant of Venice,castmemberandSeattleShakespeareCompanyveteranDavidGoldstein,withanassistfromourinterns(MatsEcklund,MelanieMoser,KayNahm,andDaleRoss),askedouraudiencestohelpusraiseadditionalfundsfor Seattle Shakespeare Company in the face of several significant funding cuts.Theresponseandgenerosityfromaudiencemembers—manyofyou—wasoverwhelming:ourgoalwas$7000,andwemorethandoubledthatamount!

Then,onApril20th,abeautifulspringevening,wehostedour6thannualBill’sBirthdayBash.Morethan200peoplejoinedusforafunnightofauctionsandentertainment.Wehadmorethan300 itemsdonatedfortheauction.Theeventgeneratednearly$95,000forthetheatre.Ofthat,$33,500wasdonatedaspartofourFund-an-Actor/Raise-the-Paddle,themostever,with92friendssteppinguptomakeagift.
