Chapter I
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Project
Temperature monitoring has been a usual part in everyone’s life. From scientists and engineers to household families, thermometers arean indispensable tool. Interfacing it to a computer would greatly add toits functionality and flexibility. Thus, automation of temperatureacquisition, data analysis, and response mechanism would beobserved.
1.2 Overview of the Current State of Technology
Thermometers come in plenty of varieties today. Some of themare installed on heating and cooling systems, factories, laboratoriesand other temperature- critical entities. Simpler ones can be found athomes in handy sizes. Another great innovation is the temperaturesensor found on latest PC motherboards that comes with software foreasy hardware configuration esp. for “over clocking”. There are also afew present devices that can be connected to a computer like the
QK145: Serial Temperature Sensor that also uses a serial port and theMaxim’s MAX6577, can measure temperature over a range of −40°C to 125°C that can be can be
interfaced to a PC through its parallel port. Moreover, there is also a corporation in the
US named Thermometrics that manufactures custom analog and digitaltemperature sensors.

1.1 Project Rationale
Temperature sensors should be able to measure both room and
contact temperature. The equipped controller should handle the dataand transmit it both by visual display (e.g. electronic LEDs) and bytransmitting it to an output device.

Project Description
1.2 Problem Statement
To develop a temperature sensor with a controller to interface it
to a computer program
1.3 Proposed Research Project
2.2.1. General Objectives
• To develop and test a device that measures temperature using a
sensor
• To develop a controller that handles the temperature output
• To develop a data communication link from the temperaturesensor to the computer
• To develop a software accepting the device output, analyzes the
data, and produces visual representations of the temperature
2.2.2. Specific Objectives

To critically examine and employ the LM35 temperature sensorsseries to be used in the device
To attach a visual output device such as a 7-segment LEDDisplay
To build a Serial port driver for the device using RS-232standards
To design a GUI that produces computations, graphs, charts andother visual output based on the temperature sensor results
2.2.3. Scope and Limitations
This device is suited for most fields in the industry to acquire room andsolid temperature. It can be tested on most environments exceptunderwater and in measuring liquid temperature. It can be operatedinside the temperature range of -55 to +150oC. The device onlysupports RS-232 serial connection. It requires 12 V DC input.
