Both fleets have started out the racing season with great participation and excitement. Thanks to the fleet captains, Paul and Jerry, for their efforts in getting everything organized. You may have noticed the new look of the website. We are trying to keep all our communications consistent by using the “billboard” photo whenever possible. Thanks to Tim for taking the time to re-work the site a bit to make it more user- friendly. In addition to the website, another PR initiative we will be starting in June is the distribution of a tri-fold brochure describing ESSA and our purpose. The tri-fold brochure will be placed at the visitor centers in Wicomico, Somerset and Dorchester counties and will be placed in the local marinas in the area. Our goal is to let everyone know more about ESSA in hopes we can grow in membership and diversity. We will focus on the Somers Cove Marina and the Cambridge City Marina with this PR effort. Thanks to Betsy, Paul, Jerry and Ken for getting the tri-fold designed and printed. If you have not received your 2006 Yearbook, ESSA decal or photo CD and would like to receive one, please drop me a note at [email protected] or call me at 410-873-2151. In the next issue I will describe the special ESSA sailing awards available all of us, including an exciting new award donated by Walton Alder. This award, which will be called the Great Shoals Lighthouse Trophy, will be presented to “the ESSA member who in the opinion of the Committee has demonstrated the most outstanding sailing accomplishment or performed the highest level of meritorious service in the promotion and support of sailboat racing or a combination, thereof”. So, the season is here, let’s get out and enjoy what we have been preparing for during the past cold months! Palm trees and crystal blue waters have been exchanged for oak trees and Chesapeake marshlands with much cooler temperatures! From The Tangier Fleet Captain…Jerry Gerlitzki Welllllll… the first race of the season…how was it you ask? We were ready to rumble and boy did we tumble, well some us did but we won’t get into that. The spring winds did not let us down, with 25 knots and gust to 30 how could you not have fun! I can’t speak for the rest of you but that was some great sailing! Yeah, some of us took on a little water, had a little trouble keeping the boats upright, some controversy and yes sailing is a contact sport but it was fun! The only down side to that race was some of the new equipment couldn’t be used, and I know a few of those sailors are just itching to get out the big guns. Now to the cruising section. This year we are beefing up the cruising activity. I have set up a meeting at Ledo’s, May 23, 6:00pm, for organizing the first 2 cruises of the season, the Memorial Day and Summer Cruises. Anyone interested in those events should think about attending this meeting and if you can’t make it, contact someone who has to get the low down. If you have never cruised or even if you’re an experienced cruiser these events will be sure to satisfy, so get out there and enjoy the beauty of our waters!

This year ESSA Tangier Fleet will be introducing the NEW SUNSET CRUISE SERIES. Beginning in June 2006 Tangier Fleet will start a Sunset Cruise the second Friday of every month, destination being either Roaring Point or Mollies Point depending on weather conditions. There will be an option of sailing out just for the evening or mooring out for an overnight stay, your choice. Each boat should plan on being self-sufficient. The Sunset Cruise is a set date open invitation; anyone who wants to coordinate with other boats must plan accordingly. Plan on leaving port between 5:30 and 6:00 PM. Note from the editor – Perfect time for a “Boatini”

From the Choptank Fleet Captain…Paul West

With three races under our belt already the season is off to a great start as more boats are getting out for every race. After the race, be sure to walk the docks and welcome our new members and if you are a new member don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to those in the fleet and ask where dinner is. Usually we all go to Plaza Tapatia but this week 5/24 we have been invited to the model condo in Deep Harbor. If you did not receive the announcement and directions via email, email me at [email protected] . If we all make it a point to talk to other sailors about ESSA, we should be able to round up 4 or 5 more boats to race on Wednesday nights. We just moved to the Cambridge Yacht Basin and I personally have talked to 2 people on our dock alone, both of whom have been in the marina for eight years, who didn’t know about us. I don’t know if they will join but it is worth a try. I keep hearing stories of the ESSA “glory days” when there were 30 boats on the line and multiple classes and I’d love to see that again in Cambridge. We have produced tri-fold flyers that I will give to everyone to pass out to friends, neighbors and total strangers if it makes it easier. Let’s see if we can get 15 boats on the line for the second series and 20 boats by the third series! There were a couple of people who were not able to download the last set of race instructions with the revised committee boat schedule so I have re-sent them to those who mentioned it to me. Please double check the last set of race instructions sent out and write down your date to serve as committee boat. To the extent that you can, when it is your turn to serve as Race Committee, please do your best to arrive early enough to evaluate the course, not only based on the wind direction, but where it is most logical to set up the start line as it relates to the start AND finish. Take your time, it is not imperative that we start precisely at 18:00 and believe me, I’m not picking on anyone as I am the guiltiest of showing up late and setting a bad line. I noticed that our first three races have not been as competitive as they could be, due to start lines that have produced a close reach parade to the first mark instead of a desired beat which should require multiple tacks. Since we are all rusty and only do this a couple of times a season, the following is a review of one way to set a start line once a course has been chosen. The goal is to set the line square (perpendicular) to the wind direction, with the weather mark (the first mark) in the center of the line.

1) First determine the wind direction by pointing your bow into the wind by looking at your wind vane and stopping. Please be aware that if you don’t stop you will only find the apparent wind, not the true wind.

2) After you have determined the wind direction look at your compass and note the angle. 3) Calculate 90 degrees from that angle and proceed on that course until the weather mark is directly abeam (90

degrees off the middle of your boat). 4) When it is abeam, look at your watch and note the time (better to use the stopwatch from the RC bag) and

proceed along this course for however many minutes/seconds you want ½ of the line to be and drop the pin. Generally you want to set the pin at the starboard end of the line as most people start on a starboard tack and if they get pinched out it is best for them to hit the pin rather than the stern of your boat.

5) Turn upwind and continue 2 or 3 boat lengths upwind of the pin. Look at your compass again and head down the reciprocal of the course you just took.

6) Re-start the stopwatch when you pass the pin and note the time again as you pass the weather mark abeam. The goal is to travel an equal amount of time at the same speed on both sides of the weather mark so that the weather mark is in the center of the line.

7) When you have traveled an equal amount of time past the weather mark, turn upwind and drop anchor. 8) Let the anchor bite and then drift back until the where ever you are going to hang the RC flag is aligned on the

same course as you just traveled to set the pin and you should have a reasonably square line.

There will be times when the tidal current is going to be stronger than the wind and you will have to adjust accordingly, but hopefully the above procedure will help and again, I recommend we take the emphasis off starting at 18:00 and put the emphasis on setting a good line and don’t be shy about asking another boat to move the pin for you either if you think the line isn’t square. Setting the line can be a pain, but when it is properly set the race is a lot more interesting and a lot more competitive by the added strategy required in making tactical decisions and the need for coordinated crew work. If the fleet can lay the mark from the start line without tacking, it is a poorly set line and the only factor in that leg of the race is sail trim and boat speed. If the fleet has to tack more than once, then you have added significantly to the challenge of the race with a more tactically demanding course. It also allows those with slower boats have a better chance at doing well if they pick the right tack and the faster boat(s) do not.

Page 5: TELLTALE Eastern Shore Sailing Association P.O. Box 374 ... · the Telltale by email instead of snail mail, send an email to janinemotsko@comcast.net Newsletter Editor Janine Motsko

As a case in point regarding tacking and strategy, during the last race, after passing Mark C we elected to stay on the port tack longer than Reveille and Zoo and slightly over-stand Mark D. Our reasoning was that we felt they were going to get swept away from the mark with the incoming tide and would have to recover lost ground which actually did happen. However, what also happened was that the starboard tack was almost a half a knot faster and even though they got swept away from the mark, the wind was stronger over by Mark D and allowed them to get back to the mark faster than we had been moving on the original port tack. We lost a lot of ground and almost recovered but the wind died out at the end. Finally, look at the entire course in relation to where you set the start finish line to make sure the rounding of the last mark makes sense. Courses are not set in stone and can be altered as needed, you just have to write it out on the board and remember that all rounding are to port unless otherwise stated. The Stedman Smith Cup will be held rain or shine wind or no-wind on Saturday, June 3rd. A $10 entry fee will be collected at the skippers meeting at 09:00 in front of the Dockmaster’s office at the Cambridge Municipal Yacht Basin. Free slips are available at the Beazer Homes Condominiums in Cambridge Creek for those of you in Bivalve who want to come up and race. The race is to the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford where we will be served a buffet lunch of crab cake sandwiches, pasta salad, dessert and iced tea or soft drinks for $12-$15 (have not gotten a set price yet). A cash bar will also be open. The race back to Cambridge will be as soon as everyone has had a nap after lunch. Race Instructions have been posted at: http://essa.writebyte.net/essa.dll/GetFile?FileID=2006SmithCupRaceInstructions Finally, as those of you who have been sailing for a while have realized, the sailing community is a small and close-knit group, bound by the joy and excitement of testing one’s skills and knowledge on the water that can, at times, come with great risk. Those at the pinnacle of the sailing world know this all too well and, not to imply that I am anywhere near that pinnacle, but we have lost one of our own. If you have not been following the Volvo Ocean Race, there was a tragic accident where one of the sailors on ABN 2, Hans Horrevoets, was washed over the deck at night and died before being found 40 minutes later. From all accounts and tributes I have read, he was a much respected and well liked man who leaves behind his pregnant wife and 2 yr old child. I was fortunate enough to have captured some of the final images of him at the Maryland Maritime Marine Festival and I think this photo captures the kindness that people remember most about him.
