All students receive a high quality, broad and balanced curriculum which develops knowledge and skills for the 21st century. At the academy, all students follow an engaging curriculum which prepares them with the qualifications and skills they need to pursue further education and employment in the future.

At Key Stage 3 the academy offers a wide variety of subjects, so that students experience a full range of subject areas and at Key Stage 4, students continue to study the core subjects of English, maths and science, with the opportunity to make a number of option choices of courses they wish to study in years 10 and 11. The academy is able to offer personalised pathways for different students. We want students to enjoy their studies at Key Stage 4 and making the right choice is important, so there are lots of people within the academy ready and willing to offer advice and guidance.

English is at the heart of everything we do in the academy. Our objective is to encourage all our students to be literate, effective communicators and good readers. At the core of all our schemes of work is a focus on skills which are transferable across the whole curriculum. Students enjoy English and many participate in the extra-curricular visits we offer. These have included meeting authors and trips to see and work with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

There is a good ethos and a friendly atmosphere in this happy department. Extra help sessions are held after school and during holidays before big exams. All year groups are put in sets based on ability and regular testing and teacher assessments allow movements during the year. This year the department started to develop further work with partner junior schools, providing curriculum support where necessary, for example with year 6 students who are working at level 6 or higher.

Science can provide the platform for students who may decide to study science related degrees in a wide range of occupational areas such as medicine, engineering, forensic science and many more. It allows students to develop their thinking and problem solving skills, whilst also having a greater understanding of the relevance of science to their everyday and working life.

Inspiring students through the teaching of science is a challenging task, but also an exceptionally rewarding one. The skills learnt in science are vitally important to help students to develop the life-skills they will need for the future. Our staff love science, put students first and work hard to engage students by sharing their passion for the subject.

Taking part in Performing Arts activities increases students’ confidence and enables them to present themselves well at interviews and other formal situations where they may have to give a presentation or a speech. Singing, dancing and acting are all good for raising students’ self-esteem and creating a feel-good factor which then impacts on enjoyment of academy life and learning in general.

Musical Theatre is a speciality in the academy and it is taught through the music curriculum and at KS4 through BTEC Performing Arts. We stage a musical every year - recent productions have been “Disco Inferno”, “West Side Story” and “Beauty and the Beast” - involving about 120 students on stage, back stage and front of house, along with 20 members of staff supporting the students with costumes, scenery, staff band, technical and front of house roles.

We have produced three academy CDs, recorded completely in-house and we have regular cross curricular radio broadcasts which are produced from our own Radio Station.

At Key Stage 3, all students have music lessons with particular emphasis on singing, popular music and music technology. All students learn to use Sibelius and Logic Pro to enhance all aspects of the curriculum. We have large and successful groups at Key Stage 4 achieving excellent results and we are able to offer GCSE music and Drama along with 19 BTEC units including Lighting, Sound Production, Recording, DJing, Stage Make Up, Mask Making, Arts Administration and Business as well as a full range of performance units in music, dance and acting, giving students a superb basis for future careers in the Arts as well as interests and skills which will last a lifetime.

Extra-curricular activities are very important. We have a Senior Choir (years 7 – 11), who perform popular music in 3 and 4 part harmony at venues around the county and undertake a European tour each Summer – most recently the South of France in 2013 and Italy in 2014. We also have a junior choir and many small vocal ensembles. On the instrumental side, around 11% of the academy has instrumental tuition and we have a swing band, soul band and several rock bands. We operate an open door policy where students can come and practise at breaks and lunch times. This engenders a good ethos and a lively and friendly atmosphere in this happy department.

Employers and further education providers want students who are capable of working efficiently and who can fit in to a work place, college or training environment immediately, equipped with the correct skills. Business and Enterprise opportunities provide our students with these transferable skills which are useful to them throughout life, whatever they may choose to do.The ability to organise, manage, plan and evaluate projects and events is invaluable to young people and helps them with all other subjects across the curriculum. We embed Business and Enterprise activities into our curriculum as well as giving discreet training in order to equip students with the skills, attitudes, qualities and knowledge that they will need.We build partnerships and forge links with local businesses and employers to provide experience and opportunities, giving our students a positive “can-do” attitude. We work extensively with the Co-operative organisation to promote fair trading values and an awareness of the importance of enterprise within the global community as well as our local community.

Healthy lifestyles are vital to everyone’s well-being and happiness and sport provides students with an ideal environment to make the most of exercise and make the right choices with regard to their fitness and health.Sport For All is important and taking part in a physical activity promotes a sense of well-being and increases self-esteem. Being part of a sports team encourages confidence and helps to build leadership skills; qualities that are important in every walk of life. There is a growing evidence base that demonstrated the positive impact of sport and physical activity in schools on students’ academic outcomes. If you enjoy coming to school and taking part in sport, then your outlook on learning in general is likely to improve. On a more specialised level, it is also vital that our most talented young people are given the opportunities, facilities and training from the earliest age possible, to ensure that they can progress to county, national and international standards.
