Introduction

The liberalization of Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector began with small steps in 1989 with the issuance of a license to a private operator for the provision of inter alia cellular mobile services to

compete with the previous monopoly provider of telecommunications services the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB). Significant changes in the number of fixed and mobile services

deployed in Bangladesh occurred in the late 1990s and the number of services in operation has subsequently grown exponentially in the past

five years.

Grameenphone

Grameenphone widely abbreviated as GP, is the leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh. With more than 53.129 million subscribers ,Grameenphone is the largest mobile phone operator in the country. It is a joint venture between Telenor and Grameen Telecom Corporation, a non-profit sister concern of the microfinance organization and community development bank Grameen Bank. Telenor, the largest telecommunications company in Norway, owns a 55.8% share of Grameenphone, Grameen Telecom owns 34.2% and the remaining 10% is publicly held.

Robi Axiata Limited, DBA Robi formerly known as AKTel, is a joint venture between Axiata Group Berhad, Malaysia (92%) and NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan (8%).Robi is the third largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh with more than 25.3 million subscribers as of December 2014.Robi boasts of the widest international roaming service in the market, connecting over 500 operators across 207 countries. It is the first operator in the country to introduce GPRS. Robi uses GSM 900/1800 MHz standard and operates on allocated 12.8 MHz frequency spectrum

Airtel is the sixth mobile phone carrier to enter the Bangladesh market, and originally launched commercial operations under the brand name Warid on May 10, 2007.In 2010, Bharti Airtel bought out majority share of the company. Citycell

Citycell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first mobile communications company of Bangladesh. It is the only CDMA network operator in the country. As of August 2013, Citycell's total mobile subscriber base is 1.338 million. Citycell is currently owned by Singtel with 45% stake and the rest 55% owned by Pacific Group and Far East Telecom.

BTCL or Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited is the largest telecommunications company in Bangladesh. The company was founded as the Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB) following Bangladesh's independence in 1971. On July 1, 2008 the BTTB became a public limited company and was renamed as BTCL..The Bangladesh government initially owned all BTCL shares, but stated it would sell the shares to the public the following year. The value of BTCL is estimated to be at Tk 15,000 crore. BTCL has a total of 12,636 officials and staff.
