Maximo Nivel is a family-owned social enterprise dedicated to providing language education, intercultural experiences, and opportunities for international work/study. Our programs include: TEFL/TESOL Certification, Native Spanish Program, Volunteer Abroad, Service Learning, University Study Abroad, and Adventure & Culture.

Our TEFL/TESOL Certification program is an intensive, university level course that professionally certifies you to teach English anywhere in the world! We are an internationally-accredited institute and our TEFL/TESOL credentials are accepted everywhere.

Maximo Nivel has TEFL training centers in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica; Antigua, Guatemala; and Cusco, Peru.

ACCREDITATION

As an accredited educational institute, Maximo Nivel must adhere to strict codes of professional practice and client service. We are recognized by the following institutions: ALTO (Association of Language Travel Organizations), Ministry of Education-Peru, Ministry of Education-Guatemala, and our official School of Record in the United States is California State University-Monterey Bay (CSUMB).

Costa Rica literally means “the rich coast,” and it is indeed a tropical paradise. Pristine rainforests lead to white sand beaches and the “pura vida” (pure life) pace of life is relaxed. Costa Rica is a great place to begin your adventure.

Guatemala is known for its Mayan roots and vibrant culture. Timeless architecture, archeological ruins, and volcanoes loom overhead. The Mayan ruins of Tikal, Lake Atitlan, and the Pacific coast beaches are all must see places!

Peru was the center of the Inca civilization. Here, the Amazon River runs through the jungle, while the peaks of the Andes are covered in snow, and to the north there are beautiful beaches on the Pacific coast.

4 WEEK ONSITE/150 HOURSThis intensive course is our flagship TEFL/TESOL program. The certification course is 4 weeks long, covering 150 hours of in-class lectures, group work, independent study, and practical teaching. This course prepares you to start working immediately as an ESL teacher anywhere in the world.

ONLINE TEFLThis is not your ordinary online TEFL! With Maximo’s online TEFL, you get all the theory and 15 hours of tutoring via Skype with your TEFL Trainer. You also teach 6 one-hour ESL lessons with a non-native student—this practical teaching module really sets our online program apart from all the others.

ACCELERATED HYBRIDThe Accelerated-Hybrid TEFL combines components from the onsite and online programs. Participants complete self-study modules during the first half of the course and interact with their TEFL Trainer via email and 7 hours of included tutoring. Participants then join the regular onsite program for the final 2 weeks, including the practical teaching module.

TEFL/TESOL CERTIFICATION

SPECIAL ADD-ON CERTIFICATIONSWe offer two very unique add-on programs: certification in Teaching Business english and certification in international exam Preparation. These add-on courses are for people who have completed a regular TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certification and are looking to specialize in specific areas of ESL.

TEACHING BUSINESS ENLGISHThe certification in Teaching Business English trains participants to extend ESL theory and methodology for business specific courses and to teach ESL to executives and professionals. Course modules include: Needs Assessment, Course Programming, Materials Creation, Task-Based Learning (TBL), and Running Simulations.

TEACHING INTERNATIONAL EXAM PREPARATIONThe certification in International Exam Preparation, trains participants in how to coach and prepare ESL learners to successfully pass international English exams such as the TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and Cambridge tests. Course modules include: Needs Assessment, Course Programming, Exam Structure, Exam Strategies, and Application of Strategies.

TEFL TRAINERSOur TEFL Trainers are highly qualified ESL professionals with Masters Degrees and/or years of experience teaching English and training ESL teachers. Our trainers have all been teaching for a minimum of 5 years and have experience teaching English in multiple countries around the world. They work hard to make the course fun, dynamic, and one of the best learning experiences of your life!

TEACHING METHODOLOGYThe TEFL program uses a variety of instructional methods including class lectures, group work, role-plays, outside reading, and observation of other ESL teachers. The curriculum and the trainers place heavy emphasis on practical teaching and you will begin teaching and practicing the methodologies and techniques right from the first week! Throughout your TEFL course, you will notice our trainers use and exemplify the same critical ESL techniques that we teach you to use.

CLASSESMaximo offers our TEFL/TESOL Certification course every month except December. Classes are held Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There is significant group work, lesson preparation, reading, and report writing that will be done outside of regular class time. The final “practical teaching week” is especially busy.

LIFETIME JOB FINDING ASSISTANCEUltimately, finding and getting a teaching job is what you want from your TEFL Certification program. TEFL participants who approach their job search professionally will have job offers within 1 to 30 days of finishing the program. As part of Maximo’s TEFL guarantee, we provide you with life-time job-finding assistance, including: - Résumé/CV workshop- Referrals to institutes, job sites, and headhunters- Professional reference letter - Ongoing references for future ESL positions- Advice on foreign work contracts

After the course, some of our TEFLers choose to teach in Latin America while others move on to Asia, Europe, and even Africa for teaching work; still others teach back in their home countries.

STUDY ABROADThrough our partnerships with local universities, you can take part in university level courses in Culture, Business, Environmental Studies, and Medicine. We also offer our special BridgeLevel programs including Social Enterprise Startup and International Entrepreneurship.

NATIVE SPANISH PROGRAMWe offer optional Spanish language classes and our free Tandem Conversation Program—a conversation exchange where we match you with a native Spanish speaker for conversation practice. Many TEFL participants choose to study 1 hour/day in private Spanish classes during their TEFL program.

VOLUNTEER ABROADGive back to the local community while immersing yourself even more deeply into the local culture and language. Maximo offers excellent international volunteer and service learning programs in areas such as working with kids, conservation, construction, teaching, medical/healthcare, and animal care.

FACILITIESWe pride ourselves on offering a great home base in Latin America. We think it’s important you have

a place to call home, a place to study, and a place to meet up with friends and to make new ones. Our institutes range in size from 15–22 classrooms, all furnished and outfitted for your comfort. Every loca-tion provides large common areas, modern computer lounges, high-speed internet, and office-wide Wi-Fi 7 days/week. We also have a great snack bar where the coffee and tea are always free.

PROFESSIONAL STAFFOur team is a unique blend of international and local professionals. The Maximo team is multilingual, and we come from a wide variety of backgrounds includ-ing education, business, international relations, and science. We all live locally in each country and are intimately familiar with the culture. The Maximo insti-tutes are open 7 days/week and our staff is available 24/7.

UNIVERSITY CREDITUniversity credit is available for our Internship, Spanish, and Volunteer programs. There are 2 ways you can earn credit: • California State University-Monterey Bay—You

can receive credit through our official School of Record and then transfer this credit to your university.

• Your University—We work with you and your school to provide all proof of studies, exams, syllabi, grades, and transcripts to be sure you get the credit you’ve earned.

ACCOMMODATIONSWe offer various accommodation options to suit your needs. Many people like to stay with local host families—shared and private rooms are available. We also offer a student residence option. This is a special guesthouse and is similar to a family-stay though you’re housed with 10–15 other participants. In addition, we offer private, furnished apartments on a limited basis. Hotels and hostels are also available and can include a private or shared room.

TRANSPORTATIONThe nice thing about San Jose and Manuel Antonio Costa Rica; Antigua, Guatemala; and Cusco, Peru

is they’re all great walking cities. Our centralized locations make it very easy to get around on foot. There are also taxis and buses which are inexpensive and very accessible.

AIRPORT PICK-UPWe’ll be there waiting for you! Our professional drivers will meet you outside of baggage claim as you exit the airport—just look for the yellow smiley face flag. You will receive a Welcome Folder detailing your accommodations, orientation time, and our Emergency contact numbers. Airport pick-up is included in all of our programs.

PARTICIPANT PROFILESParticipants in our TEFL/TESOL certification program range from 20 years old to 70 years old. Many are young professionals looking to teach, travel, and gain international work experience. Other participants have previous teaching experience or come with other types of professional backgrounds. To enroll in the TEFL/TESOL program, you must be a native English speaker or pass our English Diagnostic exam at the Advanced Level.

HOLIDAYSOur intercultural centers are open 7 days/week year-round. Our institutes are closed to the public only on 25 December and 1 January. This ensures you always have a great home base at Maximo! Local holidays are observed and even though our centers are open, volunteer projects and Spanish classes can be affected. We will work with you during the booking process to minimize the effect holidays have on your program.
