Undergraduate top-up courseOur one-year BEng Tech (Hons) Petroleum and Gas Engineering (Top-up) is a unique course designed for those holding Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diplomas (HND) and foundation degrees in a relevant subject such as engineering, chemistry and geology. This course has been designed to help you, through individual assessment, to meet the requirements of the Engineering Council and a relevant professional institution for registration to IEng level. Useful information on routes to professional registration and a list of licensed engineering institutions is provided on the Engineering Council website. You should also visit the websites of the relevant professional engineering institutions for further guidance and information specific to each institution.

Teesside University open learning engineering As well as courses delivered at Teesside University’s Middlesbrough campus, we offer a range of well-established open learning courses aimed at individuals that are unable to attend conventional classroom-based courses. Teesside University open learning engineering is a realistic way to deliver high-quality engineering BTEC, HNC and HND programmes in a range of engineering disciplines. For example, if you work offshore or have an itinerant role in oil and gas infrastructure, you can study remotely and flexibly in your own time.

Courses through open or distance learning

> chemical engineering> electrical and electronic engineering> instrumentation and control engineering> mechanical engineering> petroleum engineering> process engineering.

Courses using blended learning (distance and attendance in short blocks)

> offshore engineering and subsea intervention.

The two semesters I spent studying petroleum engineering modules were fantastic. The courses comprised a blend of upstream and downstream technology, and I was exposed to an exciting area of oil and gas field technology: shale oil extraction. I was mesmerised by the amount of technology the shale industry uses to improve recovery – drilling up to 10,000 feet, horizontal well design, hydraulic fracturing and miscible gas injection.

My project involved a simulate-and-cost estimate and was related to production optimisation from tight reservoirs using Eclispe. It helped me secure a position in the United Arab Emirates at a leading oil and gas multinational.

Engineering courses for the energy sector

We deliver a range of full and part-time courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level if you are progressing from school or college. These courses are also relevant if you are already in work and seeking further academic and professional development.

We offer a range of courses in the following areas.

Enhanced oil recovery and core analysis laboratory This laboratory is equipped with core plugging and trimming, core preparation and conventional core properties measurement equipment, in addition to special core analysis measurements such as fluid relative permeabilities as well as rock surface wetting quantification. The flow through porous media, enhanced oil recovery techniques and core analysis are also undertaken in this laboratory.

Petrophysics laboratory This facility allows you to study the properties of rocks, particularly measuring porosity and evaluating permeability. It is equipped with sieve analysis equipment to investigate grain sorting and its effect on permeability and the porosity of rocks. You will be able to gauge saturation and fluid flow through porous media.

Surface characterisation laboratoryThis laboratory is equipped with a zeta analyser where you can measure the rock surface electric charge. You study the rock surface wetting state, and adsorption and desorption potential using digitised contact angle and thermo-gravimetric apparatus respectively.

Drilling laboratoryThis laboratory is equipped with mud measurement equipment including mud density, mud rheology and mud filtration systems for you to measure mud cake and formation damage. It provides a good opportunity for you to develop awareness of the importance of oilfield drilling fluids.

Process and manufacturing laboratoriesThis flexible multifunctional industry-standard facility includes a commercial supervisory control (SCADA) system linked to a range of process plants, distillation and separation columns, and a pyrolysis plant for reprocessing waste into chemicals. We have invested in 3D printing and laser processing facilities for instrumentation and control engineering, chemical engineering and petroleum engineering students.

Power system simulator laboratoryThis state-of-the-art teaching laboratory allows you to explore the practical aspects of generating and distributing power including renewable and sustainable energy sources and their interaction with the distribution grid. This facility replicates characteristics of major power stations and wind generation facilities operating in Teesside, allowing you to learn about the most relevant current techniques and how these are implemented within an industrial environment.

All our courses are supported by industry-standard laboratory facilities.

I work in the petroleum industry and found the course really useful. I particularly enjoyed learning new things that helped me in my career, especially the software simulations, drilling engineering, EOR, hydrocarbon production and reservoir engineering. Staff were very helpful and their experience in the petroleum industry was evident during lectures.

Khaled Younis A Mohamed MSc Petroleum Engineering

My project was very practical and a hands-on oil field development which I could relate to from my previous industrial experience at Shell. It helped me to distinguish myself professionally. Also, the expanded job opportunities that I gained after my MSc has really helped propel my career forward. My time at Teesside University was a life-changing experience.
