But instead of making sports headlines,he's spent the past decade making waves in the creati ve wor ld as founder of The Ebeling Group, anintemational production company and creative think tank responsible for Grammy nominated musicvideos and commercials for Fortune 100 brands. His most meaningfu l project brought together a team of programmers, hackers, artists and inventors todeveloped the EyeWriter - a low-cost , open source eye-tracking device that al lows paralyzed artists todraw using only the ir eyes. An ini tiative of Ebel ing's nonprof it Not Impossible Foundat ion, the f irstEyeWriter was buil t for an L.A. street artist , Tony "Tempt" Quan, who is completely paralyzed by ALS(Lou Gehrig's disease). Time magazine named the EyeWriter one of the 50 best inventions of 2010.The Not Impossible Foundat ion matches ordinary prob lems with extraordinary people - fusingimagination and technology - to create low-cost, do-it-yourself solut ions for real-world issues.

ROBOT IC ISTDU Associa te Professor Richard Voyles is carving a niche develop ing robots that can wriggle, f ly or rol linto the Earth's harshest environments to collect information and perform life-savinq functions moresafely and more eff ic iently than ever. His soda-can-size TerminatorBot i s a two-armed torso that uses i ts limbs to move its body as well as topick things up and move them out of its way. The lack of legs keeps the robot small enough to accessspaces where humans or search dogs can't go - such as structures that collapse after an ear thquake orother disaster. "You can insert this robot into a void and let it crawl through the debris to look forsurvivors who are t rapped in there," Voyles says.Funded by the National Science Foundation, Voyles and his collaborators also developed roboticAquapods to search out oi l and other contaminants in coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico. There evenare appl ications for colonoscopy robot ics that would make the process more comfortable for pat ients. Also in the pipel ine are basketba ll -s ized robots that can climb steep pi les of debr is and others that canslither like a snake through tiny openings - whatever it takes to get to places people can't go and gatherthe information they need.Voyles ' robots could even help in the explorat ion of other planets. TerminatorBots, only a few thousanddollars apiece, could roam around extraterrestrial landscapes and allow scientists to create detailed mapsthat include soil analyses.Voyles and his team have designed several di fferent TerminatorBot types that vary in the design of theirlimbs. "They each have different capabili ties, so we could send out a whole army of them and have themperform different tasks and even help each other. Together they can be very versat ile. That 's whatmakes them so great .B
