Urban Housing - Sergison Bates ArchitectsCanning Town
NewhamLondon
Page 2
Canning town was designed by Sergison Bates for the London and Quadrant Housing Trust. It provides
14 three-storey houses and one five storey block of flats for the community. The site was previously
empty and is in an area that is socially and economi-cally deprived. The architect aimed to improve these
conditions by creating new, protected public space and quality housing. In this way, the bricks used are
clean and optimistic in character; the bricks typical dimensions (65x215x102.5) and of Baggeridge Ochill
Greystone smooth specification.
Thermal and acoustic insulation are provided by min-eral wool, concrete screed and polyethylene. Beam
and block floor construction is used on the ground with screed laid on top. The inner wall is blockwork
with timber joists running along the first floor, set into the wall. Internal planning is fairly conventional and
effective. Brick is the overall material expression with panels of render to add visual interest around large
windows, maximising daylight.
