Celebrating 1 year of TechSavvy mv…

For the past one year, we’ve been really pleased with the responses and feedbacks

received on our in-house tech magazine TechSavvy mv. Although it’s still early days,

and we certainly hope to improve even better. Thank you all ,who have been

instrumental in the evolution of TechsavvyMv.

We often come across people who achieve an incredible degree of worldly success, but

remain under tremendous pressure. They remain mentally stressed and physically drained.

Though they achieve growth and take up additional responsibilities, their mental pressure

also increases proportionately. With all the success and glory they achieve, you will find

them struggling with an inner thirst for fulfillment, a hunger for personal congruency and

a deep need for developing their relationships with other people. The reason for this para-

dox is that the fundamental values and principles of life and living that they have focused

upon and much less understood.

We take it for granted that right living comes naturally as we grow up; but that does not

happen. Living is a science as well as an art. To be dynamic in your field of activity and at

the same time maintain peace of mind you have to be an artist of life, a techno craft of

your personality. It requires specific training and education. You need the training to

know the technology of life and to gain mastery over yourself and your life.

In the untrained process of living, people are craving for two things – success and peace.

Success is the tribute that the world pays to excellence. True success and enduring happi-

ness is a result of incorporating and integrating the time tested values and principles of life

in every fiber of your activities in your day-to-day living. To achieve balance in life, we

should learn prioritize ruthlessly. The secret to booking your time effectively boils down

to knowing what's important and what can wait. But it's critical to use the sharpest knife

possible in trimming the essential from the secondary.

"Learn to ask questions that help you determine the level of urgency.”

The tragedy of life is not that it ends so

soon, but that we wait so

long to begin it.

A zim Hashim Premji is an In-

dian business tycoon, philanthro-

p i s t a n d t he c h ai r m a n

of Wipro Limited, a group company that

holds Wipro Technologies, India's third

largest software development companies.

According to Forbes, he is currently the

third richest Indian with a personal wealth

of US$17 billion in 2010. He was also

among the 50 richest people in the world

from 2001 to 2003 according to Forbes. In

April 2004, he was rated among the 100

most influential people in the world

by Time magazine. He was also honored

with Padma Bhushan in 2005. His assets

include 74% of Wipro. Wipro Limited,

which dealt in hydrogenated cooking fats

along with consumer products, grew from

a company of US $2.5 million to a giant of

$1.4 billion under Premji's leadership.

Wipro Technologies, one of its group com-

panies, is one of India's largest software

companies and is ranked among the top

100 technology companies globally.

Azim Premji was born in Karachi, Present

day Pakistan, to a Gujarati Khoja, Shia Is-

maili Muslim family. His father M. H.

Premji owned the Western India Products

(which later became Wipro Ltd.) which

made hydrogenated vegetable oils and

fats. His grandfather was the rice king of

Burma. His father had declined an invita-

tion from Muhammed Ali Jinnah to go to

Pakistan. While he completed his initial

education at St. Mary's School, Mumbai,

Premji was forced to leave his studies in

electrical engineering from Stanford Uni-

versity, California, USA at the age of 21 to

take over the family business when his fa-

ther, M.H. Premji, suddenly died in 1966.

He has since after a gap of over thirty years

completed his degree in Electrical Engi-

neering.

Premji’s story of success and prominence

clearly shows how determination and per-

severance, when coupled with knowl-

edge, clear vision and proper planning,

enable one to reach the peak of success

and leadership. A straight forward per-

son, he doesn’t believe in resorting to

bribery or corruption to get things done

and associates quality with integrity. He

is an absolute workaholic and according

to him work is the only way to success

and survival in a competitive environ-

ment. A tough employer, he expects his

employees to be competent and will not

tolerate lies or deception from anyone.

In the year 2001, Premji established Azim

Premji Foundation, a not-for-profit or-

ganization with a vision of influencing the

lives of millions of children in India by

facilitating the universalisation of elemen-

tary education. The foundation works

closely with the state governments of Kar-

nataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya

Pradesh etc and the programs cover over

5000 rural schools. Premji contributes the

financial resources for the foundation.

Personally, Premji is known for his humil-

ity and helping mentality. Easily one of

the richest men in the world, he always

travels in economy class. One of his favor-

ite recreational activity is hiking. He leads

a quiet life with his wife Yasmin Premji

who had worked for ‘Inside Out-

side’ (editorial) in Mumbai and his two

sons in a simple, but elegant villa in Ban-

galore. The elder son, Rishad, works in

the USA for GE and the younger one,

Tariq, has co-founded a dotcom and

works from Bangalore. Mr. Premji who

holds 78% stakes in the company does not

believe in naming one of his sons as his

successor just for the norms.

A Wise Counting

Emperor Akbar was in the habit of putting

riddles and puzzles to his courtiers. He

often asked questions which were strange

and witty. It took much wisdom to answer

these questions.

Once he asked a very strange question.

The courtiers were dumb folded by his

question.

Akbar glanced at his courtiers. As he

looked, one by one the heads began to

hang low in search of an answer. It was at

this moment that Birbal entered the court-

yard. Birbal who knew the nature of the

emperor quickly grasped the situation and

asked, "May I know the question so that I

can try for an answer".

Akbar said, "How many crows are there

in this city?"

Without even a moment's thought, Birbal

replied "There are fifty thousand five hun-

dred and eighty nine crows, my lord".

"How can you be so sure?” asked Akbar.

Birbal said, "Make your men count, My

lord. If you find more crows it means

some have come to visit their relatives

here. If you find less number of crows it

means some have gone to visit their rela-

tives elsewhere".

Akbar was pleased very much by Birbal's

wit.

Self Appraisal

A little boy went to a telephone booth which

was at the cash counter of a store and dialed a

number.

The store-owner observed and listened to the

conversation:

Boy : "Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting

your lawn?

Woman : (at the other end of the phone line) "I

already have someone to cut my lawn."

Boy : "Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the

price than the person who cuts your lawn now."

Woman : I'm very satisfied with the person who

is presently cutting my lawn.

Boy : (with more perseverance) "Lady, I'll even

sweep the floor and the stairs of your house for

free.

Woman : No, thank you.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced

the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening

to all this, walked over

to the boy.

Store Owner : "Son... I

like your attitude; I

like that positive spirit

and would like to offer

you a job."

Boy : "No thanks,

Store Owner : But you

were really pleading

for one.

Boy : No Sir, I was

just checking my performance at the job I al-

ready have. I am the one who is working for that

lady I was talking to!"

Good Excuse

A man was driving well above the speed limit when a police car suddenly emerged

from behind, sirens blaring. Thinking he could outpace the cop, the man pushed his

accelerator to the floor. His car speed rose to sixty, then seventy, eighty, and ninety.

Finally, the man thought, what the heck, and pulled over, ready to receive a speeding

ticket.

The police officer got out, leaned over the man and said: ‘ Listen, Mister, I have had a

really lousy day, and I just want to go home. Give me a good excuse and I'll let you

go.’

The man thought for a moment and said: Three weeks ago my wife ran off with a po-

lice officer. When I saw your car in my mirror, I thought you were that officer and

were trying to give her.

Storage Area Network

A SAN (Storage Area Network) is a network specifically dedicated to the task of transporting data for storage and retrieval. SAN architectures are alternatives to storing data on disks directly attached to servers or stor-ing data on Network Attached Storage (NAS)devices which are con-nected through general purpose networks.

In order to meet the demands of the storage system, enterprises apply SAN to increase the system efficiency and capacity expansion. Accord-ing to SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association), SAN is:

The purpose of the SAN is transmitting data between storage systems and storage systems or storage systems and client servers. The SAN fabric contains physical connections from storage systems to client, and then storage management devices, servers, and network devices. How-ever, SAN is usually defined as block I/O services provider. The storage system contains storage components, devices, computer equipments, software applications, and network devices. SAN is able to attach with various kinds of storage devices, such as disk-array subsys-tems, CD towers, magnetic tape drivers and libraries, and provides data I/O services via hub or switches through network connections.

Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) is a SCSI variant which en-capsulates SCSI data inTCP packets and transits them over IP networks. Fibre Channel over TCP/IP (FCIP) tunnels Fibre Channel over IP-based net-works. The Internet Fibre Channel Protocol (iFCP) transports Fibre Channel Layer 4 FCP on

Advantages of SAN By integrating storage devices, SAN increases the storage space usability and cost efficiency.

SAN is the high-speed storage sharing system. SAN increases the network bandwidth and reliability of data I/O. SAN is separated from the regular network system, and has an ability to expand the storage capacity. SAN reduces the cost of the storage management since it simplifies the system fabric and devices management.
