TECHNOLOGY WILL SAVE OUR MINDS AND BODIES

A Look into What Future Lives Will Depend On

KEY QUESTIONS

*What is Medical technology?

*What new technologies exist in the medical world ?

*How are they being implemented?

*What are the pros and cons of these technologies?

*What factors affect the growth of medical

technology?

*How do these things effect the medical community

and it’s systems?

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

The term “Medical Technology” can be used to refer to the

procedures, equipment, and processes by which medical care is

delivered.

Examples of changes in technology would include new medical and

surgical procedures (e.g., angioplasty, joint replacements), drugs

(e.g., biologic agents), medical devices (e.g., CT scanners, implantable

defibrillators), and new support systems (e.g., electronic medical

records and transmission of information, telemedicine), as well as

innovations to the quality and standard of life.

TELEMEDICINE*Is a new program that

virtually delivers medical

experts to a patient's

bedside.

*With the portable

equipment, experts from

across the world can zoom

in on the patient's features,

check X-rays, ask questions

and even conduct physical

exams.

PROS OF TELEMEDICINE

There is one neurologist per every 100,000

people in the United States, this network

provides an instant doctor for patients in need.

Most hospitals do not have 24/7 neurology

coverage and this service allows a hospital to

bring that expert to the bedside in no time

PROS OF TELEMEDICINE

Medical Fact…Strokes are the No. 3 killer in the United States. Every 45 seconds someone in America has a stroke and depending on the time it takes to get patients care, they can have permanent disability or death.

So that is why this medical technology is considered so important!

Page 8: Technology will save our minds and bodies

CONS OF TELEMEDICINE

The doctor is not actually present, greater room for

error.

It is costly to set up rooms with virtual doctor

assistance

Patients may not feel the level of care is there, lack

of connection between doctor and patient.

A device is the new doctor…

ORIGAMI PAPER SENSOR

Technology does not always mean that latest most high -

tech gadgets, sometimes the most smallest advancements

can be the most difficult, but yet SAVE THE MOST LIVES.

The Origami Paper Sensor Origami paper sensor

researchers say is a 3D point-of-care sensor used to detect

malaria and HIV

The sensor also know as the oPad can be printed on a

simple office printer paper and costs about 10 cents.

Page 11: Technology will save our minds and bodies

ORIGAMI PAPER SENSOR

From a sample of urination on the paper (glucose, malaria, HIV, etc.) becomes targeted and a specific reaction occurs, such as the paper turning a certain color or showing two lines instead of one, determining the results.

PROS AND CONS

*Can be assembled in less than a minute for less than a dime

*Provides instant results, no waiting game

*Similar to pregnancy test technology, so we know it is reliable in its indications for disease

*Its only a indication for the disease and not the cure

*Issue of how to dispense this technology to everyone in need of it

While empowering individuals with timely, relevant and

personalized information about their health will undoubtedly

lead to better outcomes in some circumstances, these

innovations do not come without potential downsides…

Questions to think about:

*How the Internet and Medical Health technology relate?

*What Factors Affect the Growth of New Medical Technology?

*How Changes in Medical Technology Affect Health Care

Costs ?

Page 14: Technology will save our minds and bodies

THE INTERNET AND THE MEDICAL WORLD

*The internet now allows us to learn about a condition we might be suffering from, connect with other people in the same boat and even read the relevant scientific literature on the topic , however what do we do with all of this new information….

*Problems begin to arise from this outcome by patients not having the training and analytical skills to translate the information they find into better outcomes

*Also it is said this explosion of unfiltered data has unintended effects, such as an increase in unnecessary tests and procedures or growing angst amongst patients about their health

WHAT IS AFFECTING MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY GROWTH

Many factors influence innovation in

medical care including:

1. Consumer demand for better health is a

prime factor.

2. Research shows that the use of medical care

rises with income: as people and the nation

become wealthier, they provide a fertile

market for new medical innovations.

Page 17: Technology will save our minds and bodies

W HAT IS AFFECTING MEDICAL TECHNOLO GY GROW T H

3. Consumers want medical care that will help them

achieve and maintain good health, and advances in

medical technology are perceived as ways to promote

those goals.

4. Consumer demand is affected by the increased public

awareness of medical technology through the media, the

Internet, and direct-to-consumer advertising.

Page 19: Technology will save our minds and bodies

HEALTH CARE COSTS OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

A key question from policymakers is why spending on health

care consistently rises more rapidly than spending on other

goods and services.

Health care experts point to the development and diffusion of

medical technology as primary factors in explaining the

persistent difference between health spending and overall

economic growth, with some arguing that new medical

technology may account for about one-half or more of real long-

term spending growth.

Page 20: Technology will save our minds and bodies

*Development of new treatments for previously untreatable terminal conditions, including long-term maintenance therapy for treatment of such diseases as diabetes, end-stage renal disease, and AIDS

*Major advances in clinical ability to treat previously untreatable acute conditions, such as coronary artery bypass graft

*Development of new procedures for discovering and treating secondary diseases within a disease, such as erythropoietin to treat anemia in dialysis patients

A Break Down of the Factors

Page 21: Technology will save our minds and bodies

A BREAK DOWN OF THE FACTORS

Expansion of the indications for a treatment over time, increasing the patient

population to which the treatment is applied

On-going, incremental improvements in existing capabilities, which may

improve quality

Clinical progress, through major advances or by the cumulative effect of

incremental improvements, that extends the scope of medicine to conditions

once regarded as beyond its boundaries, such as mental illness and substance

abuse.

Page 22: Technology will save our minds and bodies

CONCLUSION

Medical technology will always

continue to change along with

human demand and hopefully for

the future it will develop for the

better and for the right reasons,

being an improvement of life and

the well being of people all over.
