The SIPPclub, which launched for IOS and Android in late 2017, uses an augmented reality system which interacts with the labels on bottles sold through the Sipp’s wine box subscription service to provide detailed notes, including temperature and tasting guides, and food suggestions.

All wines are loaded into the SIPPclub app, so users can simply view the label through their phone’s camera, and Sipp propagates all the information they need right on theimage.

A prediction model in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise and Datalab based on neural net technology, that forecasts the volume of future room bookings using Skyscanner search data.

The model can be readily transformed into a visualisation and so help provide insights and benefits to Glasgow City Council and the wider tourism industry such as hoteliers, retailers, Glasgow Airport and infrastructure investors as well.

The concept could be scaled and used by other Scottish cities providing the commercial data owners agree to ongoing data provision.

Using the virtual reality app for mobiles, visitors and residents of Edinburgh will for the first time be able to compare the city they know with the capital of King James V.

The new digital reconstruction is the first to be created of the period, and is based on a drawing from 1544, thought to be the earliest accurate depiction of the capital. Stereoscopic video and 360 degree images in the game environment show virtual visitors what it was like to move through Edinburgh’s streets and be immersed in the city’s architecture of the period.

A Tourism Tracer Dashboard in Tasmania, Australia uses cutting edge GPS technology and world leading computer programming to understand the travel behaviour of visitors to the area. Researchers have monitored the real-time movements of tourists in Tasmania over 18 months in one of the largest and longest studies of its kind.

The tourist project delivers powerful insights into Tasmania's strengths and weaknesses with immediate applications in terms of infrastructure needs and bottlenecks. For instance, it shows how much visitors use car parks, and exactly where they visit and do not visit in national parks.

From widespread open-source software used by its government, to improved connectivity on Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, the Balearic islands are aiming to appeal to technologists as well as tourists.

From 2018, Spain's Balearic Islands will be covered in half a million sensors. The regional government's ambition is to turn the archipelago into a globally recognized lab for Internet of Things projects.

The main advantage of LoRaWAN (low-range, wide-area network) specification is it avoids the need for complex local installations and allows for the development of open and secure networks to create alternative business models.

One Swedish rail company is offering passengers the option of using a biometric chip implanted into their hand in lieu of a paper train ticket. SJ is the first travel company in the world to let people use this innovative method. The tiny chip has the same technology as Oyster cards and contactless bank cards – NFC – to enable conductors to scan passengers’ hands. The scheme is only applicable to those who already have the biometric implant – SJ is not offering to chip people. Around 2,000 Swedes have had the surgical implant to date, most of them employed in the tech industry.
