KUKA.SimThe simulation and offline programming software for KUKA systems and robots

Optimize the use of your systems and robots and achieve a greater level of flexibility and productivity by means of offline programming. Using forward-thinking and practical graphical programming in a virtual environment keeps your system available for the task itself – the production process. With its intuitive user interface and a multitude of different functions and modules, KUKA.Sim provides the optimal solution and the highest degree of efficiency in offline programming.

Reachability check and collision detectionAre all the desired points actually within reach of your selected robot? With the reachability check and collision detection features, you can ensure the viability of your robot programs and cell layouts.

Simple creation of layoutsThe optimum layouts for your production systems can be developed quickly at an early stage in the project. Drag the components from the electronic catalog and place them in the required position. Validate alternatives and verify concepts with a minimum of effort.

Electronic catalog and parametric modeling Most of the components in the “eCatalog” are defined para-metrically. This means that you can select a fence and adapt its height or width according to your requirements. This para-metric approach renders CAD remodeling unnecessary and saves you a lot of time. Grippers, conveyors, fences and many other components are included in the catalog.

Importing dataCreate your own reusable library. Almost all recognized CAD formats can be imported into KUKA.Sim, for example:

• STEP up to AP203, AP214, AP242• IGES 5.1, 5.2, 5.3• CATIA up to V4.2.5, V5R25, V6 2013• Creo up to elements 5.0• Inventor up to 2016• Siemens Nx up to NX 9.0• and many more...

Smart components – prepared for Industrie 4.0.You can use KUKA.Sim to predict cycle times in a virtual envi-ronment without having to build the real workcell. This gives you the opportunity to save a lot of time in the testing phase. Since the virtual controller program is identical in every way to the software running on your real robot, the cycle times determined in KUKA.Sim are very accurate indeed. In addition to this, KUKA.Sim includes other comprehensive functions for designing your components intelligently. For example: I/O mapping for controlling components by way of signals, conversion of geometries such as grippers, guns, machine tools, etc. into kinematic systems, or the integration of I/O signals, sensors such as light barriers, etc. This is the basis for the implementation of Industrie 4.0. It increases productivity while ensuring traceable quality and data transparency.

Offline programming that is both powerful and easy to useKUKA.OfficeLite gives you the opportunity to write your robot programs in KUKA Robot Language (KRL) itself, thus rendering postprocessors redundant. During offline programming, tools will support you when you are calibrating workpieces. In addi-tion, any programs created on-site can be imported 1 : 1 into KUKA OfficeLite, allowing you to check the programs.

Exchanging data with customers Exchange data securely and easily using the Drawing Page functions:

• Select template DIN A4 to A0• Include views from the 3D world• Generate a material list• Add dimensions• Export as a PDF or 2D DWG

Exporting 3D layoutsIf one more is required – Export the simulation into a general 3D PDF format that is suitable for visualization with all recognized functions such as:

• Motion sequence in a 3D PDF• 3D functions are available• Parts lists are also provided• Notes on the parts list can be saved• You can save your own PDF templates

KUKA.OfficeLite – the virtual robot controllerKUKA.OfficeLite displays the tried and tested KUKA programming environment on the PC:

• KUKA.OfficeLite is the Virtual Robot Controller (VRC)

• It looks and feels like the real controller

• KUKA.OfficeLite functions in real time (with vxworks). As a result, it is possible to provide very accurate infor-mation about cycle times

• KUKA TechOptions are supported• I/O simulation also with KUKA.Sim Pro

Path generation based on CAD dataKUKA.Sim 3.0 can be used to create robot motion paths that are based on the available CAD data in a straight forward manner:

• Selection functions for the CAD path• Automatic path extension ( parameters)• Determine the offset of the recognized path• Define the point distance options• Define the motion parameters• Complete the automated path

KUKA Safe OperationsSafety zones can be specified using the MAP controllers:

• Each robot has a subgroup for its safety zones such as:

–Cell area –Working area –Spheres on tool

• The specified safety zones can be exported as an XML file

• The exported XML file can be used in KUKA.WorkVisual 4.0 for the safety zone configuration

Simulating what happens – the digital factory To reduce development times and protect investments, we start with a virtual design. We create three-dimensional mod-els of products and systems in the digital factory. We integrate them into an end-to-end process chain, then control, test, verify and optimize the models. The integration of new com-ponents and their interaction with existing systems can also be tested in this way, without causing long downtimes or loss of production. The greater part of the real start-up can thus be brought forward to the world of digital modeling.

KUKA.Sim LayoutKUKA.Sim Layout is a program for creating 3D layouts with KUKA robots. It makes it possible to create different layouts, drafts and robot tasks quickly and easily and compare them with each other. With its extensive component library and Plug&Play functionality, it is the ideal simulation software for sales teams for producing concept studies and reachability analyses without cycle time specifications.

KUKA.Sim ProKUKA.Sim Pro is used for the complete offline programming of KUKA robots. This product allows the analysis of cycle times and the generation of robot programs. It also enables a real-time connection to the virtual KUKA robot controller (KUKA.OfficeLite). KUKA.Sim Pro is additionally used for build-ing parametric components and defining kinematic systems which can also be used in KUKA.Sim Layout. KUKA.OfficeLite is included in the KUKA.Sim Pro package.

Smart Production, Internet of Things or Industrie 4.0. Even if the names and terms used vary from one country to another, they all share the same goal: the creation of elementary competitive advantages – at both company level and in global competition.

Work on the factory of the future is thus in full swing world-wide. This involves intelligent, networked industrial pro- duction and logistics processes on the basis of cyber-physical production systems (CPPS). Or, to put it simply: factories that, by means of advanced networking, respond intelligently to changing tasks and continuously reconfigure themselves. The factory of tomorrow should be able to organize and con-tinuously optimize its production processes, thereby counter-acting the consequences of another development: demographic change. New solutions are called for because of falling birth rates and increasingly aged populations in modern industrial societies. Without the “smart factory”, it will be simply impossible to achieve a productivity increase on this scale at the same time as effectively husbanding our existing natural resources.

Industrie 4.0Prepared for transformation of the worlds of production

In order to make new working environments both highly productive and ergonomically beneficial for the labor force, KUKA is developing central key technologies: collaborative robots, mobile assistance systems, autonomously controlled vehicles and intelligently networked automation solutions that support humans in the work setting, easing the workload in a variety of ways.

In collaboration with experts from diverse sectors, KUKA is now already implementing highly flexible, digitized manu-facturing processes that will open up new opportunities in a competitive environment and lastingly change the way we work and produce.
