TENT GLACIER (for 10-12 MEN)
Climatic conditions prevailing in the northern sector of
our country are entirely different from those of other
regions. The low temperature equipped with high wind
creates chill. In order to safe-guard the country, our
Army has to operate in such hostile and harsh weathers
(Glacier) conditions. Glacier tent for 10-12 men has been
developed by DRDO and is intend to be used for
habitation of troops deployed in glacier regions. It oprovides protection to the troops up to -40 C. The glacier
tent has been made on double-layer principles. The outer
layer consists of waterproof fabric. The inner layer is
made of insulating materials, aluminized fabric. These
materials are encased in closely woven fabric cotton.

Now a days, technological thrust is entrusted towards
miniaturization of technologies with enhance
performance having multiple functions in one structure
thus trying to mimic nature. This could be made
possible with multi-functional materials where the
structures have more than one function in the form of
composites or hybrid of several distinct material phases
in which each phase perform a different but necessary
function. These functions may include stable structures,
sensing, actuators, self healing and energy systems for
protection of personnel & structures against external
radiation, chemical, ballistic & blast threats etc.
The DMSRDE being nodal non-metallic materials lab
have delivered several cutting edge technologies and
products to maintain life line of defence forces and
sister system laboratories in the form of personnel
protection equipment like BPJ, helmet, boot anti-mine,
NBC suits, extreme cold weather clothing & shelters,
coolants for mechanized ground vehicles for extreme
cold conditions (-40°c), aerial vehicles, gaskets & seals
for gas turbine engines, LCA and missile systems, etc.
Via fusion innovation, DMSRDE has developed unique
capabilities to develop flexible nano sensors for distant
health monitoring where flexible polymers coated with
novel metals like Ag, Au, Pt, etc. have been effectively
develop for ECG & EEG monitoring. The FRP nano
composites have been developed using inorganic
polymer modified functional multi-walled carbon nano-
tube to achieve diversified properties in one i.e.
electrical conductance with thermal insulation for
submarine applications.
DMSRDE has also developed a strategically important
MSPCE and shield for green terrain. These success
paved a path for development of MSN for tactical
applications by armed forces.
In the area of personnel protection, DMSRDE has
developed state of art BPJ in weight less than 10.5 Kg in
which we are able to provide fair shots on throat and
groin. The ceramic armour used herein covering an area -2 2of 1000 cm as compared to 750 cm in general BPJs. The
ceramic armour uniquely has designed to take body
shape as compared to flat ceramic panels so far used
conventionally.
The DMSRDE has also developed strategic materials for
high and ultra high temperature applications e.g.
polysilane & poly carbosilane as precursor materials for
SiC fiber, SiC resin materials for making SiC SiC , F R
C SiC , CFCMCs & CMC for high tech applications. F R
Another strategic material Polyphosphazene has also
been developed which has glass transition temperature
up to - 100°c and very useful for cryogenic applications.
The Fluroalkoxypolyphosphazene elastomers are fire
resistance rubber material and not affected with UV
radiation and stable in both protic & aprotic solvents.
DMSRDE has developed a universal compact protective
memory module (CPMM) in collaboration with HAL
which will be used in all helicopters & aeroplanes in near
future. Uniquely DMSRDE has developed a capability
for spinning of serveral advanced fibers by melt
spinning technique viz. SiC fiber, UHMWPE fiber,
polyphosphazene fiber and PBO fibers, etc.
Besides material & technology development, DMSRDE
has contributed a lot for life extension programme and
failure analysis of fighter planes, helicopters of IAF, thus
serving the nation continuously and leading to achieve
self reliance.

FRP COMPOSITES FOR
KANCHAN ARMOUR
Fiber-reinforced Plastic (FRP) materials have been
studied extensively by various investigators all over the
world. However it's suitability to form composite
armour is little known from published literature.
Therefore, R&D assignments were undertaken by
DMSRDE Kanpur, and DMRL Hyderabad to develop
and evaluate various FRP laminates suitable for
ballistic applications. DMSRDE has developed ballistic
resistant composites (1000 mm x 1000 mm x 50 mm)
based on glass / phenolic sandwich structure.
