Subsea Hot Tap TechnologyONS - Stavanger 2010

The Hot Tap process
• Hot Tapping means connecting a branch pipe to an existing pipeline without shutting down or disturbing production
• A Hot Tap tee, high integrity valve and Hot Tap cutting machine is used
• The Hot Tap cutting is performed through the open valve and the cut-out section is retracted through the valve
• The valve is then closed and Hot Tap machine disconnected
• The new branch pipe may be connected to the existing pipeline by industry standard tie-in tools
Project objective and goalsObjective:
• Remote operation / deep water application / high safety standard
Why important to develop subsea Hot Tap technology?
• Reliable, flexible and cost effective tie-in to existing subsea pipeline systems
• Provide full flexibility/independence when selecting tie-in location - cost effectiveness - utilize spare transport capacity in pipeline systems
• Eliminate requirements for pre-installed Hot Tap tee
Goals:
• Increased safety
• Fully remote operation from standard intervention vessels
• Increased depth and pressure capability for the Hot Tap technology
Hot Tap technology - development milestones
• 1999: Strategic development project initiated
• 2005: Prototype qualification completed
• 2008: First offshore operation
Successful remote Hot Tap operation at Statfjord field 145 meter water depth
• 2009: World’s deepest remote Hot Taps performed at 860 m water depth at Ormen Lange field
Ormen Lange Hot Tap
Remote Hot Tap system – ongoing developmentRemotely welded retrofit tee concept
• Remote installation of a structural reinforcement clamp containing the branch pipe
• Pressure barrier made by internal weld inside the branch pipe
• Welding system contains all functions for making and monitoring the internal weld
• First planned offshore use: 2012 Åsgard Minimum Flow project – Midgard Compression
The RCP valve ONS presentation
Can we increase the oil production?
Business challenge
• Inflow control – from reservoir to well
• Thin oil zones and heterogeneous reservoirs - gas and water coning
The answer is YES!
• Using a device that is simple, robust and autonomous
• With an estimated potential of 50 million barrels of oil on the Troll field alone
RCP valve working principle
• Based on the Bernoulli principle
• Increased oil recovery by gas and water choking
• Valves distributed along the producing well
Movable disk
oil gas
Heavy oil production with the RCP valve
Comparing
• water production with oil production
• conventional technology with the new RCP valve
Conclusion
• For similar water handling capacity the RCP valve will produce a lot more oil
