Elementary’s new Acceptable Use Policy.

Erin has raised some questions that you may have as well, so we are going to answer them tonight.

Question:

What is my school going to do to keep me safe while I am using

computers?

Answer: Wake Forest Elementary believes in ensuring the safety of all students by:

•Using structured web activities such as WebQuests

•Using search engines such as Yahooligans and Ask Jeeves for Kids

• Monitoring Internet use

Question: What do my teachers mean when they talk about “ethical use?”

Answer: This school feels that both teachers and students should practice ethical use by:

•Representing only their work as their own

•Respecting others’ property

•Obeying copyright laws

Question: My classroom has many different kinds of students. How can we make sure everyone gets a fair chance on the computers?

Answer: To make sure that diverse learners get a chance to use our school’s resources equally, we will:

•Post sign-up sheets at computers so that students have equal time slots

•Use technology such as eReader for students with diverse learning styles

•Provide extra assistance to those with little technology background

Question: Does North Carolina have rules for technology?

Answer: Wake Forest Elementary’s Acceptable Use Policy addresses the following North Carolina Technology Standards:

•The students will display ethical behavior

•The students will learn basic computer skills and will use them to enhance learning

Our teachers are also expected to follow the North Carolina Code of Ethics.

Question: What about the

United States? Do they have

rules too?

Answer: Our school also meets the following National Technology Standards:

•Students will understand ethical issues related to technology

•Students will be proficient in their use of technology

•Students will use technology to solve problems

•Students will use technology to make decisions

Question: What are some ways that my parents can help me at home?

Answer: Parents can help by doing the following:

•Follow school technology rules at home and model ethical technology use

•Check out the information provided at SafeKids.com

•Talk to their child about not giving away personal information online

•Feel free to ask questions of the teacher
