Appl i cat i ons used to “spread, transmit, and disseminate knowledge, ideas, and information

farther and faster.”

Let’s face it. This sign makes Many of us nervous.

Page 9: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

What will we miss out on?

W h a t happens if we can’t check our

phones?

Page 10: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

On average, Americans spend

2.7 hours

Or 9,720 seconds per day

Socializing on their

mobile device.

Page 11: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

That’s over

Twice the amount of time they spend eating,

and over 1/3 of the time

they spend sleeping

each day.

Page 12: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

And that’s just how much time we spend on our

c e l l phones.

Today, we’ve grown so

u s e d t o u s i n g

technology to

communicate,

that we are blind to how

greatly it affects us.

Areas of Communication Studies:

applied communication, communication theory, electronic media, mass communication, organizational communication, and visual communication…

…to name a few.

Page 15: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

In other words, technology Affects just about everything.

Page 16: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Important people to know about:

Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs

Page 17: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Mark Zuckerberg

The creator of Facebook,

one of the largest social-

networking sites in the

world.

Page 18: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Social interaction was no longer mainly face-to-face, but virtual. It was groundbreaking.

Page 19: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Steve Jobs C o - f o u n d e r , chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc.

Co-founder and chief executive off icer of Pixar Animation Studios.

Page 20: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Creative entrepreneur who revolutionized technological industries like personal computers, music, animated movies, tablet computers, phones, and digital publishing.

In other words, he changed Electronically-

mediated communication as we know it.

Page 21: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Jobs invented

the

technological

capabilities,

and Zuckerberg introduced the

necessity for them, in order to

communicate at such an efficient

level.

Together, they have impacted communicative technologies

in ways never imagined,

setting the bar for everyone else.

Page 22: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Technologies such as computer databases, like ones used by the government and military, store personal information.

This poses threats to personal privacy.

Page 24: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Electronic writing allows for multiple authors.

This means there is less certain authorship of articles, and sometimes less credible sources.

Page 25: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Some believe that mobile communication decreases the amount one engages with others, or that increased use of mobile communication leads to greater social isolation.

Page 26: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Whether humans Can be fully replaced by technology, in relationships.

Page 27: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction
Page 28: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Communication is no longer confined to face-to-face

interactions.

We can talk to (and see) people on different sides of the globe.

Page 29: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

Technology has even changed the amount of personal information we share with others.

Murmur Study examines the innovative messaging technologies like

Twitter and Facebook’s Status update.

These messages are like

digital small talk.

Page 30: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

“These fleeting thoughts are

accumulated, archived and digitally-indexed by corporations.”

Page 31: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

“…the sheer volume of publicly accessible personal — often emotional — expression should give us pause.”

Page 32: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

By studying technology and how greatly it affects the way humans communicate, We can solve practical communication problems.

Page 33: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

H o w e v e r , the increased efficiency t h a t c o m e s w i t h technology can also cause loss of meaning because the human voice and enunciation are no longer there to clear any ambiguities.

Page 34: Technology and Human Communication, Social Interaction

It’s up to us

to decide whether

it’s worth the

sacrifices. Just how badly do we need to communicate ?
