In 2006,the Food and Drug Administrationlicensed the quadrivalent humanpapillomavirus vaccine for females ages9-26 to prevent infection with genitalhuman papillomavirus types 6, 11, 16and 18.

Dr Barbara A Slade of the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention inAtlanta and colleagues analyzed reportsof adverse events following HPVimmunization received by the USVaccine Adverse Event ReportingSystem. During the study period, thesystem received 12,424 reports ofadverse events following immunizationwith HPV — an overall reporting rateof 53.9 reports per 100,000 vaccinedoses distributed.—Internet

BEIJING, 21 Aug—For more than a decade, Jonathanand Angela Scott have been following these majesticbeasts across the African plains for the BBC’s BigCat Diary. But now the future of the top-rated wildlifeshow is in doubt. For the first time in 13 years, nonew series has been commissioned and, in a cost-cutting exercise, the film crews who annually criss-crossed Kenya’s Masai Mara have stayed at home.

With no series to film, the Scotts have continuedfollowing the region’s big cats — lions, leopards andcheetahs — and have now produced a book: Stars OfBig Cat Diary.

Scott first pitched his tent in the Mara in 1975 as azoology graduate on a backpacking trip. It was therethat he met wildlife photographer Angela and theygot married on the dramatic escarpment where thefinal scenes for the film Out Of Africa were filmed.Angela Scott took the amazing photographs shownhere. Although Poland and the CzechRepublic, which was also included inthe anti-missile system, were eager forthe implementation of the project,Russia’s sharp opposition, the Iran issueand a different voice in the US Congresshave added uncertainties and com-plications to the plan, analysts say.

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Saturday, 22 August, 2009

I was standing silent on Thetketaung Hill, onwhich some 30 people of Kyaikkhami met theirtragic death due to internal armed insurgency follow-ing the independence. A monsoon wind was blowinggently, and gradually, I lost myself in my memoriesof historic events.

After the Second World War, the war-tornMyanmar still had piles of remnant arms along withammunition. At that time, Myanmar Tatmadaw wasnot strong yet. Some leaders of western countriesremarked that Myanmar would see bloodshed if itregained independence in that situation. Myanmarpeople were under the yoke of colonial rule for manygenerations, so they were anxious to regain independ-ence. Myanmar regained independence on 4 January1948, and Independence Day ceremonies were cel-ebrated on a grand scale across the nation. InKyaikkhami, local people not only celebrated Inde-pendence Day ceremony but also put up an Independ-ence Day commemorative monument in the towncentre. We can visualize how much Myanmar peoplewere happy with independence.

Surely, Kyaikkhami dwellers, who were mas-sacred on Thetketaung Hill, had taken part in theIndependence Day celebration with a great joy. Andthey might have expected that after having regainedindependence, sovereign Myanmar would become apeaceful, developed nation. However, their hopeswould not come true, and instead they lost their livesin consequence of armed struggle line two years afterthe independence. At the national level, the armedstrife cost lives of tens of thousands of Myanmarpeople. The inferno of insurgency was raging forabout 40 years. Indeed, Myanmar has achieved inde-pendence, so the people should have deserved inde-pendence. And Myanmars should be a people thatdeserves democracy after the nation has beentransformed into a democratic one. Only then canthe people build the nation into a developed one, making good use of the democratic practice.

After zipping my raincoat, I drove the cycle toleave Thetketaung Hill. I noticed that Hneepadawand Kunhlar villages were lively with restaurants infront of them. The region used to often see robberieseven in daytime. In contrast, local people can nowlead a peaceful life. I got to Thanbyuzayat at about10.30 pm. Upon arrival at Wagaru Village on my wayto Thanbyuzayat, it rained heavily. I was wet throughwith rainwater and shivering with cold. At that time,Ok-aw-than Restaurant near Shweyingwe beyondWagaru Village was still on. I stopped for a while atthe restaurant. I changed my dressing with the spareclothes I carried in my haversack inside the restau-rant. Long ago, robbery occurred very often in thatplace, and passengers were in fear on arrival at theplace. There, I enjoyed entertainment programmes.

Looking forward to positive responseNgar Min Swe

The rain persisted, so only at 1 am the following day, could I leave the restaurant. I saw the entrance road toKyaikkhami decorated with toddy palms.

The whole Kyaikkhami was in darkness and Ithought local people were enjoying a good sleep. Ifound no one on the main road. The entire dwellers andKyaikkhami were asleep. A grid has been set up inKhaikkhami, the town is hoped to get adequate powersupply.

Getting home, I found my mother asleep. Shehad been bedridden for about five years. After havinga long gaze at Mother, I laid a bamboo matting besideher bed and went to bed. I woke up late the followingmorning. She shared my tiredness, saying that I hadbeen tired because I returned by motorcycle home inKyaikkhami from Kyaikto. Her words of loving-kind-ness made tiredness go away in no time. While havinga chat with my mother, there was a phone call to mefrom my immediate elder sister. On the phone, sheinvited me for lunch.

I drove to my sister’s house through the mainroad. Unlike at night, Kyaikkhami was lively withactivities under the morning sunshine. Along the mainroad were many fine houses with lovely cars.Kyaikkhami has about 25 luxurious licensed cars al-though such a luxury car is priced at about 100 millionkyats. Kyaikkhami has changed a lot if compared witha couple of decades ago. Previously, Kyaikkhami didnot see any such fine houses and cars. All vehicles localpeople had at that time were only about 10 motorcy-cles. Now, the whole town is hustle with Honda cycles.

I had mohinkha to my heart’s content in mysister’s house, and then I proceeded to Kyar jetty wheretrawlers were moored. In the past, the alleyways wereearthen ones in the town. It was under dust layers insummer, the streets were muddy in the rainy season. Now, the streets have been upgraded to tarred ones. The bamboo matting houses along the road to Kyarjetty have been replaced with fine ones. Kyar jetty wasfound boisterous with trade activities of fish purchas-ing centres. I visited the fish purchasing centre of mycousin U Khin Win. He conducted me round the centre.I was pleased to see that fish merchants were getting onwith their businesses as evidenced by fine residencesand luxurious automobiles due to the fact that saltwaterfish has foreign markets. U Khin Win was born in YeHla Village near Kyaikkhami. About 20 years ago, hewent through tough times, as a woodcutter. Now, hehas become rich, fishing and farming rubber in anhonest way. In Kyaikkhami, the majority of rich menlike U Khin Win used to be odd-job earners.

I left Kyaikkhami jetty for the Yayle Pagoda. There, I met Chairman U Thein Win and Secretary UAung Than of the pagoda board of trustees. I said,“Gentlemen, I have just had sightseeing around thetown. Kyaikkhami has developed a lot in a couple of

decades. It is even more convenient for me to phonehere than in Yangon with CDMA phone I broughtfrom Yangon.” U Thein Win said, “About 20 yearsago, local people did not have access to even manualphone, let alone auto phone and CDMA phone. Now,Kyaikkhami has 400 auto phones.” Kyaikkhami hasmany auto phones in proportion to its population. Italso has about 50 CDMA mobile phones.

I noticed many more religious buildings on thepagoda hill. U Thein Win said that they had built atwo-storey hostel, two one-storey hostels and a fineguesthouse on the hill for the comfort and conven-ience of the pilgrims, and that could accommodateabout 1000 pilgrims. The Kyaikkhami Yayle Pagodais situated in the sea, but people can visit it safely dueto the sky road to it. After paying reverence to thepagoda, I went to Shukhintha and sat down on a brickbench. I thought about our town and country, enjoy-ing the natural beauty of the sea with coral reefs.

Kyaikkhami has developed leaps and boundsif compared with that about two decades ago, and sohave townships and villages throughout the nation. No one can deny that the whole nation has developedto a certain degree owing to the combined efforts ofthe government, the people and the Tatmadaw. If thecountry had not come under economic sanctionsimposed by the West Bloc, the nation would havedeveloped many more times that at present.

The waters in front of the town are a large area.Myanmar has an over 1500 miles long coast. Na-tional traders can do oversea trade through the sea.Fish and prawn are plentiful in the Myanmar waters. The water from the sea is an inexhaustible source toproduce salt on a commercial scale. The nationproduces oil, gas and pearl a vast scale from the sea.Myanmar is gifted with resource-rich forests, fertilesoil, mines, precious stones, fish, prawn and electric-power sources. So, Myanmar should have been adeveloped country.

The nation lacked stability and peace for 40years from 1948 to 1988 as a result of politicalconflicts and racism. Therefore, Myanmar was oncea least developed country, which is very discourag-ing. Since 1988, the government, the people and theTatmadaw have been rebuilding the nation, takinglessons from the past. In that regard, they gave firstpriority to stability and community peace. Then, theytried to their utmost to help the motherland rise fromthe state of being a least developed country.

Although the government, the people and theTatmadaw were working hard in concert for stability, peace and development of the nation, anti-governmentgroups made demands that the government hand overpower to them. The nation can be out of control ifpower is handed over to them in the absence of anenduring constitution. Then that can be followed bynational disunity and collapse of the Union. Our ThreeMain National Causes namely Non-disintegration ofthe Union, Non-disintegration of national solidarityand Perpetuation of sovereignty serves as the lifebloodof the nation. Therefore, the Tatmadaw governmentadheres to the lifeblood of Myanmar. Anti-govern-ment groups’ one-side demands were not fulfilled. Itis very stupid of anti-government groups to ask thecountries of the West Bloc to impose economicsanctions against their mother country. Those coun-tries complied with their requests.

(See page 9)

The groups concerned have to decide whetherthey will keep on disrupting the approved consti-tution and nation-building tasks or to work incooperation with the government, the people andthe Tatmadaw respecting the constitution.

(from page 8)The economic sanctions have strong negative

effects both on the nation and on the people. Many ofthe foreign entrepreneurs have withdrawn their in-vestments from Myanmar, thus destroying a largenumber of job opportunities and harming good op-portunities for economic growth. In spite of economicsanctions, the country has risen from a least devel-oped to a developing one thanks to the earnest effortsthe government, the people and the Tatmadaw have

been making in collaboration. If the anti-governmentgroups had not put their wish in the fore or demandedeconomic sanctions for 20 years and if the govern-ment, the people and the Tatmadaw had worked sincethen, Myanmar would have developed many moretimes than at present.

My article is not designed to put blame on anindividual, or a particular group, but to persuade anti-government groups to learn lessons from the pastevents and mend their ways. Myanmar people bynature do not harbour grudge even towards those whohave harmed their interest, and inspired by loving-kindness, they forgive those persons. To err is human, but anti-government groups are required to take les-sons from their mistakes and mend their ways.

Now, Myanmar has seen an enduring consti-tution. So, the government, the people and theTatmadaw will keep on working together to build amodern, developed discipline-flourishing demo-cratic nation in accordance with the new constitu-tion. The groups concerned have to decide whetherthey will keep on disrupting the approved constitu-tion and nation-building tasks or to work in coop-eration with the government, the people and theTatmadaw respecting the constitution. With theforgive and forget sentiment, the people are lookingforward to loving-kindness from anti-governmentgroups.

Study reveals insight into life on EarthLOS ANGELES, 20 Aug—

A NASA-funded studysuggests humans mightnot exist today if not forthe ancient fusing of twomicroscopic, single-celled organisms calledprokaryotes.

Biologist James Lakeof the UCLA Center forAstrobiology comparedproteins present in morethan 3,000 differentprokaryotes — a type ofsingle-celled organismwithout a nucleus — anddiscovered two majorclasses of relativelysimple microbes fused

together more than 2.5billion years ago. Thatendosymbiosis, ormerging of two cells, hesaid, enabled theevolution of a highlystable and successfulorganism with thecapacity to use energyfrom sunlight viaphotosynthesis.

Further evolution led tophotosynthetic organismsproducing oxygen as abyproduct and theresulting oxygenation ofEarth’s atmosphereprofoundly affected theevolution of life, leading

to more complexorganisms that consumedoxygen, which were theancestors of moderno x y g e n - b r e a t h i n gcreatures, includinghumans.”Higher lifewould not have happenedwithout this event,” Lakesaid. “These are veryimportant organisms. Atthe time these two earlyprokaryotes wereevolving, there was nooxygen in the Earth’satmosphere. Humanscould not live. No oxygen-breathing organisms couldlive.”—Internet

Ancient Chinese herbsmay help heart

HOUSTON, 20 Aug—Ancient Chinese herbalformulas for heart disease may produce large amountsof artery-widening nitric oxide, US researcherssaid.Researchers at The University of Texas HealthScience Center at Houston said nitric oxide is crucialto the cardiovascular system because it signals theinner walls of blood vessels to relax — facilitatingthe flow of blood through the heart and circulatorysystem.

Senior author Nathan S Bryan said the study revealsthat ancient Chinese herbal formulas “have profoundnitric oxide bioactivity primarily through theenhancement of nitric oxide in the inner walls of bloodvessels, but also through their ability to convert nitriteand nitrate into nitric oxide.” Researchers performedlaboratory tests on DanShen, GuaLou and other herbspurchased at a Houston store to assess their ability toproduce nitric oxide. Ancient Chinese herbal formulasused primarily for cardiovascular indications are madeup of three to 25 herbs — used as tablets, elixirs, soupsand teas.— Internet

US scientists develop targeted cancertreatment using nanomaterials

WASHINGTON, 20 Aug—US Scientists have developeda way to targeted brain cancer cells using inorganictitanium dioxide nanoparticles bonded to soft biologicalmaterial, the US Department of Energy’s ArgonneNational Laboratory said on Wednesday. Thousands ofpeople die from malignanat brain tumors every year, and the tumors are resistant to conventional therapies. This nano-bio technology may eventually provide analternative form of therapy that targets only cancer cellsand does not affect normal living tissue. “It is a realexample of how nano and biological interfacing can beused for biomedical application,” said scientist ElenaRozhkova with Argonne’s Center for NanoscaleMaterials. “We chose brain cancer because of its difficultyin treatment and its unique receptors.” “The significanceof this work lies in our ability to effectively target nanoparticles to specific cell surface receptors expressed onbrain cancer cells,” said Dr Maciej S Lesniak, Directorof Neurosurgical Oncology at University of ChicagoBrain Tumor Center. He said, “In so doing, we haveovercome a major limitation involving the applicationof nanoparticles in medicine. We are no win a positionto develop this exciting technology in preclinical modelsof brain tumors, with the hope of one day employingthis new technology in patients.”—Internet
