Adventures in Needleturn Appliqué

Needleturn appliqué has always been Sandra’s favorite technique. She’ll share examples of her stitching improvement, explain her Master Plan technique and demonstrate each fabric shape: how to stitch deep Vs that don’t fray, make sharp points, narrow stems and stitch those pesky inner curves so they lay smooth without ripples. Whether you are an advanced appliquér or a beginner, Sandra assumes each student is new to appliqué and starts with the basics. After successfully teaching well over 1000+ students, she knows how to correct your techniques and make Needleturn appliqué a relaxing pursuit.

Rocky Mountain Bear Claw A Judy Niemeyer Design

Shirley, Certified Judy Niemeyer Instructor, revisits this great quilt porject! Rocky Mountain Bear Claw, with its viscious claws, will take you back a few generations when quilt trends incorporated scrappy backgrounds and were pieced with repeating elements. The setting for the Bear Claw is unique in that the blocks are tilted in the layout, then sewn together by rotating the blocks around a 3-1/2” square. Spiky border units were designed to square up the quilt. Floating Points, Smart Corners, and Template Layout Sheets are featured in this design, bringing a classic Quiltworx pattern up to the current design standards that our customers have come to expect when they work with one of our patterns. Also, look for a coordinating Table Runner and Pillow set for this adorable quilt!

Machine Quilting IEncore after encore! This class offered at least once each term provides the basics for machine quilting. You create a lovely wholecloth sampler wallhanging in this marathon machine quilting class. This is an extremely intense, information-filled class! You will work very hard as you absorb new techniques, become more familiar and comfortable with your machine as well as your project, and gain a new respect for your darning foot and walking foot*. By the end of the day, although you will be pooped, you will be much more confident in the machine quilting realm — and have quite a lovely project to show off!

Fun with Lucy BostonJoin Sandra in the latest national craze and discover how Lucy Boston used a simple elongated hexagon and fussy cut her way to creating amazing quilts. Learn what to look for in fabric designs that become stunning blocks: we’ll study the store’s fabric. Then see how a quick rotation or location change of the patches morphs it into an entirely new design – all using a single patch shape – and sewn together with a simple running stitch. This class is for beginners and experienced alike who love fabrics and want to expand their fabric selection knowledge yet desire simple assembly. This block is great for travel or a short visit to the doctors, and addictive. The Lucy Boston blocks are like eating pop-corn, you can’t eat just one kernel or cut and piece just one block.

Fractured LandscapesThe techniques learned in this class are based on the book Fractured Landscape Quilts by Katie Pasquini Masopust. Gail has created five quilts using Katie’s methods. In the first class session, Gail will lead you through the process of designing your fractured landscape quilt using your own 8x10 photograph. In the week between classes, the student will have their design turned into a full sized pattern. During the second and third classes, students will learn the process of creating the quilt by assembling their fabrics on Sulky Totally Stable, a heat sensitive, tear-away stabilizer. Using the techniques taught in this class, all seams have turned under edges (no raw edges or fusibles) and are machine-appliqued using an invisible thread.

JanniLou Creations’ Class Policy We’ve provided a lot of flexibility in the classes offered each term. In all cases, it’s to your advantage to commit to an entire class offering, but we understand all too well about busy schedules, so we try to include some “serial” offerings, too! We encourage early registration as space is limited in our class areas.

Our instructors have a strong commitment to making your class experiences positive learning and fun times. If a minimum number of students do not register, a class may be postponed or cancelled. Shop credit will be given. We basically have a no-cancel policy for most instruction.

At the same time, we ask a commitment from you. Please be prompt for class; times are posted

with the idea that the instructor can begin on time. It’s unfair to the instructor and to students who are prompt to be kept waiting. If your class begins at 9:30a, the Shop doors are open as early as 9:00a so you can set up.

Although verbal commitments are fine, payment must be made to secure your spot in class, and for you to receive supplies lists. We then give you the responsibility for having everything you need for a successful class adventure. You are automatically enrolled upon receipt of class fee (admission) unless notified otherwise.

If you are unable to attend a class, we are happy to issue a Shop credit IF we are notified at least FIVE DAYS PRIOR to Class. It’s important for the

instructors to have your commitment so they can be prepared for you and to insure sufficient training materials. To avoid forfeiture of your registration fee if the FIVE days’ notice cannot be met, you are welcome to send a friend as an ‘understudy.’ Bring basic sewing supplies: pins, needles, pencil (or pen), paper, thread, scissors, ruler, seam ripper — and filled bobbins. But please note: No children, babies, or guests in adult classes. Cell phones must be turned off! And please, do not wear fragrances to class. Many folks are very sensitive to fragrances.

Thanks for your cooperation and assistance in our serving you! – Lou & Crew

Intro to Silk Ribbon Embroidery

A French dressmaker in Paris introduced silk ribbon embroidery in the early 17th century when he used silk ribbons on the gowns of wealthy Parisian women. The beauty of em-broidery and the luxury of silk ribbon display a beautiful technique that is uniquely suited to floral embroidery. Work with Lou to begin your very own sampler of stitches in the lovely medium of DuPioni silk and silk ribbon. You will create a piece suitable for a pillow top or a small wall hanging. It’s fun, it’s easy, and it’s a very therapeutic project.
