has undergone significant changes over the last several months mostnotably a name change from Career Development Department to Career &College Readiness Department. In order to align with the Hart District'svision of career pathways, the Regional Occupational Program has also beenrebranded to Career & College Readiness Courses. These changes prioritizestudent exploration of careers and how course choice impactspost-secondary options. For that reason, we have placed the emphasis oncareer first in our branding.

N A S A J P L W O M E N I N S T E ( A ) MMore than a thousand young women

in junior high and high school and their parents got theopportunity to meet female NASA/JPL scientists and engineerson Saturday, March 5th. The women from NASA/JPL madepresentations at West Ranch High School on careers for womenin Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, also knownas STEAM.

Because of overwhelming demand for the original morningevent, a second afternoon section was added. Each section startedwith an introduction of the presenters, how they got to wherethey are, and a little about themselves outside of their jobs.

Following the opening, students were allowed to visit multiplelocations during two breakout sessions that included a talk onplanetary protection, the Mars Curiosity Rover Project, GraphicArt in science, a planetarium, and an opportunity to be run overby a Mars Rover simulator.

The event was sponsored by the Hart School District andincluded hundreds of Girl Scouts in the morning section. Aspecial thank you to Dennis Young of JPL for coordinating theevent.

volunteered their time, skills, and supplies to help seniorsprep for the Valencia High School Prom Magazine shoot.More than 30 seniors had their hair and makeup done bythe fabulous team of artists currently training at NewberrySchool of Beauty. Together with Newberry the CCRCosmetology program trains approximately 40 studentsevery year. Once the students complete their training andpass the state boards, they become Licensed Cosmetologistready to begin their careers immediately after graduatinghigh school. Emily Uribe, Class of 2015, recently completed herNursing Assistant Training in Los Angeles (CNA) andgraduated with honors and perfect attendance.

Emily attribute much of her success in the CNA program tothe knowledge she gained in the WSHUHSD Health SciencePathway classes, Pharmacy Assisting and Intro to Nursing.Emily shared with us she believes the material she learned inher Pharmacy and Nursing classes in high school more thanprepared her for the CNA training and put her ahead ofother students in the class. Emily will be taking her stateexam soon and plans on pursuing her education to become aregistered nurse.

was lead by Dr. Mariane Doyle, Director of Career Technical andAdult Education for the Hart District on February 25, 2016 at HartHigh School. This district-wide event, co-sponsored by the HartParent Organization, was open to all junior and senior high schoolparents. The event was designed to explain in more detail how careerpathways work at a school site and how students can access the HartDistrict's web based career exploration program, NAVIANCE.

Following the opening session parents and accompanying studentswere able to visit five career pathways represented that night. This andfuture planned events will show the importance of selecting a careerpathway while in school to help with that all important post-secondarydecision making.

Students like Maria are rare, and when they come around I am remindedwhy I love teaching. Esmeralda is an artistic culinary visionary. Even at ayoung age she is an accomplished baker and I feel that is where she willfocus her studies at Johnson and Wales University. She is a very creativeand patient student, which are two of the most important things inbecoming a pastry chef."

is what the CCR Specialist at Hart High School, Donna Washington, has to say aboutformer Hotel/Restaurant Occupations students, Christopher Mejia and Fernando Lara.Both young men completed their on-the-job training, as part of their class, at Larsen's inValencia. Following their training, both were offered employment at the restaurant.They've made several visits back to Mrs. Washington's office to thank her for suggestingthe class to them and to rave about the tips they make.

Christopher was recently promoted and when he attends Northern Arizona Universityin the fall, is seeking employment at a restaurant in the area to continue working whilehe completes his studies. Fernando is also attending college in the fall and he too hopesto use the skills he has acquired to find employment in a high-end restaurant.

Esmeralda Gomez

Maria Amado, who currently attends Valencia High School, andEsmeralda Gomez, who is a Canyon High student, have been accepted toJohnson & Wales University. Maria will be attending the Miami, Floridacampus to continue her education in the Culinary Arts. Esmerelda willhead to Denver, Colorado for her education. Both Maria and Esmereldawere also awarded scholarships to attend for their outstandingachievements in the Culinary Arts career field. The students' Advanced Culinary Arts teacher, Mike McClintock, washappy to share the following information about Maria and Esmerelda. "Maria's passion and dedication for culinary arts is rivaled by no one. Shecreates an atmosphere that inspires other students to challenge themselves.

within the William S. Hart Union High School District battled to be named the winnerof the inaugural Hart District Culinary Arts Pathway Throwdown. The school teams,composed of four students each, came from Valencia, West Ranch, Canyon, Hart, GoldenValley, who had two teams, Bowman and Sequoia high schools. All teams planned aunique menu with their culinary teachers and did initial prep work before the event. Apanel of judges chose the winner based on the tastiest, most well-prepared and beautifieddish. One of the Golden Valley teams took home the top prize for their pan-seared codfish dish.

The students are part of the Career and College Readiness program in addition to theCulinary Arts Pathway capstone course. The winners received a plaque and gift certificatesto Wolf Creek Restaurant and Brewing Company, who sponsored the competition thisyear. The plaque will be up for grabs every year following, and will be awarded to thenewest winning school.

well represented the William S Hart Union High School District at the Lockheed Code Quest JAVA programmingcompetition. Canyon High took 2nd overall in the advanced competition (they didn't even know they were in the advancedgroup!) and Valencia took 3rd overall!! The Hart District is so proud of both teams for their first time ever competing!

in the 2015-2016 Outstanding CTE Student InterviewNight on April 13, 2016 at Golden Valley High School. Eachhigh school Career Technical Education (CTE) teacher wasinvited to select one outstanding student who excelled inhis or her career pathway and who also met the followingcriteria: • Demonstrates competence in their pathway courses• Is a classroom leadermentors other students• Shows enthusiasm in and/or the subject• Demonstrates Professionalism• Communicates regularly with the teacher as a mentor• Career goals refined by their CTE experience(s)

The selected students were invited to attend InterviewNight where they met with a panel of 3-4 business partnersfrom industries related to their career pathway. The eventwas designed to give students exposure to this importantreal-world, career readiness component. In addition to theinterview, the students wrote an essay that night describinghow their CTE class had impacted them, their home lives,and career and college decision-making. Each participatingstudent was invited to attend the Outstanding CTE StudentRecognition Night where they received awards for theirachievement.

who participated in the Outstanding CTE StudentInterview Night at a special recognition event on April 26,2016 at Rio Norte Junior High. The event was co-hosted by Dr.Mariane Doyle, Director of Career Technical Education forthe Hart District and Rosalind Wayman, Senior Deputy,Supervisor Michael Antonovich's office.

Students were awarded medals within 9 career pathways andthey received commendations from the offices of U.S.Representative Steve Knight, State Senator Sharon Runner,Assemblyman Scott Wilk, Supervisor Mike Antonovich, andthe City of Santa Clarita.

Awards were also given out to Poster Contest Winner, ChloeNissen of Hart High School, and Superintendent's EssayAward winner Jared Chica of Golden Valley High School.Chloe's winner entry was the front cover of the evening'sprogram guide and Jared was honored for his outstandingessay written at Outstanding CTE Student Interview Night.

Wharton is the world’s first collegiate businessschool, established in 1881. The Investment Competition is insponsorship with Knowledge@Wharton and Aberdeen AssetManagement. The West Ranch Student Team was lead by TeamCaptain Drake Walker with fellow team members TristanEsquivez, Giann Espino, Sam Hassanzadeh, Gamin Kim, GaramKim, Eunice Yi, and Teacher/Advisor Linda Cox.
