TECHNICAL SCHEDULE (TS 12) FIRE RESISTING PEDESTRIAN TYPE DOORSETS WITH METALLIC LEAVES AND FRAMES INCLUDING OPTIONAL SMOKE CONTROL FOREWORD

This Technical Schedule (TS) forms part of a series of controlled documents which comprise the CERTIFIRE product certification scheme. It has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO IEC 17065 for product certification bodies. In addition to this Schedule the other controlled documents relevant to CERTFIRE certification are:

• TS00 - General Requirements for Certification of Passive Fire Protection

Products/Systems • CERTIFIRE Quality Manual • Certificate(s) of Approval in the CF000 series, together with any appendices • Documentation from the manufacturer • Rules for use of the CERTIFIRE logo.

This CERTIFIRE scheme aims to provide confidence that installed metallic fire resisting doorsets will be capable of achieving the designated fire resistance level and also to demonstrate compliance with performance specifications. This document is intended for the certification of fire resisting doorsets of metallic construction. It has been prepared by the organisations listed in Annex F and agreed in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO IEC 17065. Doors and doorsets of other types of construction are covered by other Technical Schedules Individual components can have a significant influence on the fire resistance doorsets. This Technical Schedule (TS) incorporates criteria to help ensure that the doorsets will provide the necessary fire resistance when correctly fitted with other CERTIFIRE approved components. For application in the UK, and in other jurisdictions which still accept British Standards, certification based upon BS tests will continue to be available against the requirements of this TS as long as regulations permit or until Warringtonfire and/or the industry decide to cease certification. This issue of TS12 supersedes previous versions and becomes effective from [date].

The evaluation, in accordance with Annex A of TS12, following the principles of FTSG Resolution 82, of proposed changes to the tested specimen(s) which will establish that such modifications can, with a reasonable degree of certainty, be considered to give a fire resistance performance equivalent to that required by the Test Standard, when installed in practice.

4 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The general requirements for the certification of doors are given in TS00 which should be

read in conjunction with this TS.

5 CLASSIFICATION 5.1 Certification of pedestrian type steel doorsets in accordance with the requirements of this

Schedule is designed to provide approvals intended to satisfy the current UK classification requirements. During the life of this Schedule the requirements for certification to satisfy the European classification requirements will be defined. This Schedule has been prepared to take into account the requirements for European classification.

5.2 For an approval to satisfy current UK classifications tests of fire resisting doorsets may be conducted in accordance with the British Standards referenced in the appropriate clauses below.

5.3 Tests conducted in accordance with harmonised European Standards may also be used

to support an approval to satisfy current UK classifications. Note that this evidence will not be used directly to provide a classification. The results will be ‘translated’ into times to failure under a British Standard test.

5.4 For a European classification the doorset shall be certificated against the requirements of

the Technical Schedule for European classification (TS42). . 6 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 6.1 Certification in accordance with this Schedule is considered on the basis of the

requirements given in TS00 ‘General Requirements for CERTIFIRE Certification of Passive Fire Protection Products/Systems’

7 FIRE RESISTANCE TEST REQUIREMENTS 7.1 Submitted test evidence may fall into one of the following categories:

• Primary test evidence • Supplementary test evidence

7.2 Primary fire resistance test evidence shall be conducted at a laboratory accredited for the

relevant test and may, at CERTIFIRE’s discretion require to be supervised by CERTIFIRE staff.

7.3 The test(s) shall be conducted fully in accordance with BS 476: Part 22 or BS EN 1634-1. 7.4 Supplementary test evidence may at CERTIFIRE’s discretion be generated at other, non-

accredited facilities. Where this is the case, the test(s) shall be supervised by CERTIFIRE and all calibration records, to UKAS level, shall be available for inspection by CERTIFIRE. Additionally, CERTIFIRE reserve the right to witness such tests.

7.5 There is no single specific fire resistance test programme required to be conducted to

gain approval, however, certification can only be based on at least one fire resistance test and cannot be evaluated solely on the basis of appraisal.

7.6 The test shall be conducted at the maximum size able to be accommodated in the

furnace unless certification is being sought for a smaller maximum size. 7.7 The submitted test evidence should be sufficient to cover each configuration in

accordance with Table 1. Where glazed vision panels are required to be fitted within the doorset, there shall be appropriate test evidence available.

7.8 Where separating elements are required to be fire resisting from both sides, two

specimens shall be tested (one from each direction) unless the element is fully symmetrical. However, in some cases it is possible to appraise doorsets whereby the fire resistance of an asymmetrical doorset tested in one direction can apply when the fire exposure is from the other direction.

7.9 Table 1 below lists the type of doorset for which rules can be generated and gives the

direction which it should be tested to cover the opposite direction. The separate columns for the integrity and insulation criteria reflect the different ability to make rules for integrity only doors as opposed to those with satisfy both criteria. A means that it is possible to identify the direction of test which covers opposite direction. A X indicates that it is not possible to identify the direction which will cover the opposite direction.

7.10 Additionally, the performance of a doorset can be influenced by the supporting construction into which it was installed during the fire test and therefore, this should be considered in accordance with Annex A of this Schedule.

7.11 Where there is likely to be a requirement for the use of extended application rules (see

Annex), it may be necessary to take additional component temperature measurements to those specified by the Test Standard. Additional test evidence may also be required in the form of a ‘modelling test’, which is designed to provide particular information on the performance of specific elements of the doorset. The need for such additional information will be determined by CERTIFIRE.

7.12 Table 2 below lists the type of door assembly for which rules can be generated and gives

the direction in which it should be tested to cover the opposite direction. The separate columns for the integrity and insulation criteria reflect the ability to make different rules for integrity only doors as opposed to those, which are required to satisfy both criteria. 8 SMOKE LEAKAGE TEST REQUIREMENTS (optional) 8.1 Where fire resisting doorsets are also intended for use where restricted ambient

temperature smoke leakage is required (i.e. assemblies requiring a suffix S as defined in Approved Document B to the Building Regulations) they may additionally be certified for such use.

8.2 The doorset shall be successfully tested in accordance with the procedures given in

CERTIFIRE’S Technical Schedule TS 21 (The Contribution of Edge Seals to the Control of Smoke Leakage via Door Assemblies). The size and arrangement of the test specimen(s) shall be as given in the Schedule contingent upon the design detail being evaluated and subject to CERTIFIRE agreement.

8.3 CERTIFIRE approved smoke seals shall be used. If the scope of certification of the seal

covers use with the door in question no further test data is required. If the scope does not cover the application, further testing with the door under evaluation shall be conducted in accordance with clause 7.4 below.

8.4 The tests shall include smoke leakage (BS 476: Part 31.1 or EN 1634-3) and

opening/closing force measurement. Smoke seals shall be CERTIFIRE approved against Technical Schedule TS 21 for use on metal fire resisting doorsets.

ANNEX A PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT

A.1 Introduction A1.1 The direct application rules from BS EN 1634-1 apply for the products covered by this

Schedule. Additionally, the principles of BS EN 1634-1 may be further extended based on either additional test evidence or by using the principles agreed within the PFPF assessment Group.

A.2 Specific restrictions on materials and construction A.2.1 Substitution of alternative insulation materials shall not be permitted unless

supplementary testing has proved interchange ability without loss of performance and shall only be introduced after receiving the approval of the assessing personnel.

A.2.2 The removal of insulated core material will not automatically provide an acceptable

uninsulated product without further testing or approval of the assessor. A.2.3 Sealing materials, especially smoke seals and intumescent seals, incorporated within fire

resistance test specimens may not be substituted by alternatives unless supplementary testing has proved interchange ability without loss of performance and providing the alternative seals are covered appropriately by CERTIFIRE approvals in accordance with TS35 and TS21.

A.3 Glazed Constructions A.3.1 The type of glass and the edge fixing technique, including type and number of fixings per

metre of perimeter, shall not be changed from those tested and shall be CERTIFIRE approved against TS 25.

A.4 Building Hardware A.4.1 Changes in building hardware are permitted provided the specification is the same and

the items comply with current certification requirements (CE or CERTIFIRE certification). A.4.2 The number of any movement restrictors such as locks, latches and hinges may be

increased but shall not be decreased. Changes to the method of attachment to door panels or frames for items of building hardware shall not be made unless proven by testing.

ANNEX E EXAMPLE OF ON SITE INFORMATION SHEET

(The data contained herein is fictitious and does not relate to any actual door)

ON SITE INFORMATION SHEET

DYANA DOORS LIMITED No CF XXX

1. General

This doorset has been fire tested and is certified by CERTIFIRE as being capable of providing fire resistance of up to 240 minutes integrity as defined in BS 476: Part 22: 1987, when installed in accordance with the following conditions. In recognition of this, the leaf carries a prefixed label on the top or hanging edge of the door leaf, issued under the terms of the CERTIFIRE scheme. This label uniquely identifies the door leaf, the manufacture of which complies with BS: ISO 9001 for quality systems and is subject to on-going surveillance. This label shall not be removed. It is emphasised that the certification is conditional upon the following instructions being complied with in their entirety. Failure to do so will invalidate this approval and may jeopardise the fire performance of the door. Door assemblies supplied pre-fitted with components by Dyna Doors Limited may be considered to meet the requirements in respect of those items. The doorset shall not be altered or modified in any way nor should the supplied hardware be changed, removed or additional items (not specified) fitted. To do this may invalidate the certification.
