Abstract

As the body of sintering literature grows, we need to step back occasionally to gain context for the current thinking to realize that

often concepts we now accept were initially quite controversial. Even the definition of sintering remains a subject of debate. This

presentation will review mostly sintering theory, but will weave in much of the earlier sintering practice developments, to give an

overview of how the field developed. Who did what, when, why, where, and for what reason Some of these issues are lost and are only

available via archeological findings. From a technical standpoint, tungsten, porcelain, iron-copper-carbon, tungsten carbide cemented

with cobalt, and bronze drove much of the early sintering practice. Indeed many commercial materials were evident prior to the first

phenomenological sintering theory. Subsequent diffusion models for sintering were highly controversial, simply because atomic models

for diffusion were not accepted. Then too we had a cast of characters that delighted audiences at early sintering conferences - so some

mention is needed on the personalities. Finally, comments will be given on the evolution of contemporary topics such as computer

simulations, microwave heating, rapid firing, and new materials. Unfortunately, most of these started many years earlier than current

researchers want to admit. A time-based map emerges for various lines of thinking and analysis.

Paper Title On Sintering Stress in Complex Powder Compacts

Date August 29 (Monday), 2011

Time 09:30~10:10

Room Halla Hall (5F)

Session Chair Prof. Didier Bouvard (Grenoble INP, France)

Abstract

Sintering stress is one of the most fundamental descriptors of a sintering powder compact. It is the mechanical analog of driving force

for sintering and is due to the curved interfaces present in a powder compact. However characterization of this quantity for realistic

powder compacts has remained elusive. It is difficult to measure experimentally, requiring instantaneous zero-strain creep experiments

at different densities during sintering1. Analytic derivations of sintering stress are limited to simple geometries with regular-shaped

particles and pores that are repeating in space. Even numerical simulations are limited to small, simple geometries2 as simulations of

microstructural evolution during sintering are just emerging. We examine sintering stress of complex powder compacts using the Potts

kinetic Monte Carlo, kMC, model. The kMC sintering model simulates detailed microstructural evolution of a compact during sintering3.

The model is able to simulate all the physical phenomena necessary to simulate simple solid state sintering. These mechanisms are

creation, diffusion and annihilation of vacancies to give densification, coarsening of grains by curvature driven grain growth that is

simultaneously pinned by porosity and coarsening of porosity by surface diffusion. The simulations are sufficiently large, consisting of

hundreds and even thousands of powder particles, and have sufficient morphological detail to enable characterization of interface

curvatures and hence the sinter stress of a complex powder compact. We will present the model, its simulation results, characterization

of interface curvatures, and sintering stress calculated from the simulation. The results obtained from the simulations will be compared

to experimental data to obtain an understanding of sintering stress in real powder compacts during sintering.

Paper Title Field Assisted Sintering of Nanometric Ceramic Materials

Date August 30 (Tuesday), 2011

Time 08:30~09:10

Room Lotus Hall (3F)

Session Chair Prof. Eugene Olevsky (San Diego State Univ., USA)

Abstract

The interest towards ceramic materials with the grain size in the nanometric range has grown dramatically in the last two decades. This

is due to the increasing attention towards the unusual physical and chemical properties that nanocrystalline materials present; properties

that offer a huge potential for several relevant technological applications. Although the limit for the nanometric range has been placed,

somehow arbitrarily, around 100 nm, the influence of the nanostructure on the physical properties of ceramic materials is expected to

become particularly evident for a grain size around or below 10-20 nm. While the synthesis of powders and thin film with grain size in

this range has been successfully demonstrated, the goal of synthesizing bulk, fully dense materials with grain sizes in this range remained,

until recently, largely unachieved. The production of bulk nanometric ceramic materials represents in fact a huge challenge for traditional

sintering techniques. Pressureless sintering and hot pressing involve very long heating cycles and are usually associated with significant

grain growth. This limitation hampered the application of nanostructured materials in fields where the materials must be in bulk form,

and limited the scientific understanding of phenomena involving bulk materials. This limitation has been partially overcome in the last

few years thanks to the application of the sintering techniques usually known as Field Assisted Sintering (FAST) or Spark Plasma Sintering

(SPS). These techniques present an attractive combination of short sintering cycles and low sintering temperatures. They allow, in fact,

to achieve very high heating rates, up to 500°C/min, and typically involve sintering cycles limited to few minutes, reducing drastically

the grain growth. Using this approach the production of simple and complex oxides with relative density above 98% and grain size as

small as 15nm have been already demonstrated, even starting with badly agglomerated nano-powders. The general characteristics of

the technique will be presented together with some example of applications to the synthesis of bulk functional ceramic oxides.

Paper Title Nano Powder and Nanostructured Materials in Powder Metallurgy

Date August 30 (Tuesday), 2011

Time 09:10~09:50

Room Lotus Hall (3F)

Session Chair Prof. Suk-Joong L. Kang (KAIST, Korea)

Abstract

Different concepts illustrate how to transform discoveries into inventions and sometimes, finally into innovations. Nanotechnology is

one of the most innovative fields in science and industry worldwide. The application of nanotechnology to powder metallurgy (PM)

brings such an innovation opening up new material and component industry and markets. PM approaches can be used to produce

nanostructures either by processing a nano-sized powder into porous or dense materials or by refining the microstructure in high energy

milling of coarser powders.

The first example reports about processing metal nano powders synthesized via various technologies combined with advanced industrial

applications such as hard coatings, catalysts, energy materials for battery and fuel cell electrode, printed electronics, magnetic material

and etc. The second example illustrates processes for the nanoporous and dense PM components, and parts using metal nano powders.

This enables the conventional PM parts with hitherto unrivaled material properties and new applications opening up markets that were

new for powder metallurgy industry. Especially, net-shaping processes, such as micro powder injection molding and rapid prototyping,

are becoming increasingly important for the micro-components that are increasingly needed in advanced PM parts in electronic-,

medical- and chemical applications.

Seeking cost-effective and environment-friendly routes for processing PM nanomaterials is becoming increasingly important. Recent

studies on optimal design and processing of nano powder agglomerates into net-shaped micro PM components are based upon

understanding the role of powder interfaces for nano-agglomerate sintering. Through optimal design of those hierarchical interfaces

such as inter- and intra-agglomerate boundaries, a full density nano powder materials can be achieved only by pressureless sintering.

To meet these technological challenges, we finally demonstrate how the rigorous combination of well-known PM technologies opened

up new applications.
