MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC

DescriptionThe MELSEC FX family includes a verycomprehensive range of base and expan-sion modules, enabling you to configurea customised system tailored to yourprecise requirements.

Depending on your application and con-trol needs you can choose from the small,attractively-priced, “stand-alone” MELSECFX0S series, the expandable FX0N series orthe more powerful FX2N series.

The FX0N and FX2N series are both a goodchoice for plant installations becausetheir expansion options enable them togrow with the needs of your application.

Network integration is also supported, making it possible for your FX controllersto communicate with other PLCs, control-lers and MMIs. The PLC systems can beconfigured as local stations in MITSUBISHInetworks (MELSECNET/MINI), and as slavestations in open networks (PROFIBUS/DP).

In addition to this, the controllers of theMELSEC FX0N/FX2N series also supportintegration in multidrop and peer-to-peernetwork configurations.

All FX systems are members of the greatMELSEC family of PLCs, in which all sys-tems are compatible with one another.

Special features: Expandable from 10 – 256 I/Os Compact, robust design Extensive communications support Simple installation Custom configuration for the needs of

existing systems Innovative, “future-proof” technology

protects your investment

Worldwide standards Quality products manufactured in

facilities with ISO 9001 certified qualitymanagement systems and subject tospecial manufacturers’ standards

Expandability and power

The MELSEC FX family is highly flexible, enabling fast and efficient configurationand programming for the application athand.

It is the ideal choice, no matter whetheryou need to install a simple control appli-cation requiring up to 30 I/Os (FX0S) or ademanding, complex system with up to256 I/O points (FX2N).

The capacity of the CPUs of the FX0N/FX2N

series can be expanded with memorycassettes. Non-volatile memory cassetteswith a capacity of up to 16K programsteps are available for reliable, long-termstorage of your PLC projects. In additionto the other advantages this enables youto switch programs at very short notice, simply by replacing a cassette.

There are three series in the MELSEC FXfamily, each of which is designed for adifferent application profile:

The FX0S seriesThe MELSEC FX0S series is the inexpensiveentry to the MELSEC FX family. With itssmall dimensions it is also an excellentalternative to relay/contactor controlconfigurations.

The FX0N seriesThe CPUs of the FX0N series offer morepower than the FX0S series, plus modularexpansion capabilities. You can choosefrom I/O expansion modules and specialfunction modules for a wide variety ofapplications.

The FX2N seriesThe new FX2N series complements theexisting FX family and replaces the suc-cessful FX series. It gives you the freedomof modular expandability, with a wideselection of expansion modules and spe-cial function modules. The FX2N is also oneof the fastest PLC systems available, with a

cycle time of just 0,08 µs per logical in-struction.

Thus the FX2N series gives you the mostpowefull CPU for your apllication and com-bines all benefits of a compact PLC systemwith the performance of a modular PLCsystem.

Installation

Handling and installation of the modulesare very simple.

All modules are fitted with an integratedDIN adapter for snap-on installation onDIN rail systems.

If you wish, the modules can also beinstalled normally on flat surfaces withscrew fastenings.

In the FX0N and FX2N series all connec-tions between the CPU’s system bus andthe expansion and special functionmodules are made with the standard flatribbon cable. No other internal systemwiring is required for connecting the CPUand modules.

Wiring

All external wiring is connected to thestandard cable terminals to the screwterminals on the modules. The entireterminal block has a cover which providesprotection against short circuits andinadvertent contact.

Programming

All CPUs have a standardised program-ming interface for connection of a pro-gramming unit or a personal computer.

Simple control tasks can be programmeddirectly using hand-held programmingunits or the control units of the FX-DUseries. In addition to this the CPUs canalso be programmed with the MELSECMEDOC plus software package, whichruns on a normal PC. This powerful pro-gramming environment can be used tocreate large application programs con-forming to the IEC 1131.3 standard.

Combining Units from Different Series

The I/O expansion modules and specialfunction modules from the two series canbe combined at will, subject to the restric-tions imposed by the differences betweenthe systems.

For example, you can use all the modulesfor the FX0N series in combination with abase unit from the FX2N series. Combineduse of modules from both series is alsopossible.

A special conversion adapter is available(designation: FX2N-CNV-IF) for connectingmodules from the old FX series to the baseunits of the FX2N series.

The tables and figures below show the re-strictions and other special requirementsthat apply for combined use of modulesfrom different systems.

MELSEC FX0N/FX2NSYSTEM DESCRIPTION Extension and Special Function Modules

In general

Additional special function modules areavailable that make it possible to extendthe capacity of the basic and extensionunits of your PLC system.

There are three basic categories of specialfunction modules: Modules that occupy digital I/Os (con-

nected on the right hand side of thecontroller unit). These are the digitalcompact and modular extension unitsas well as the special function modules.

Modules of the FX0N series that do notoccupy any digital I/Os (connected onthe left hand side of the controller unit). These are the FX0N-232ADP and theFX0N-485ADP.

Internal adapter boards for the FX2N

series. These expansion units are in-stalled directly in the controller and donot occupy any digital I/Os.

FX0N series configuration notes

The configuration specifications for theFX0N series permit connection of the follow-ing combinations of expansion units to thebase units: a maximum of 2 special function

modulesor

digital expansion modules with up to32 inputs and outputs (4 x 8 I/Os or2 x 16 I/Os) or

one special function module and onedigital expansion module with up to16 inputs and outputs (2 x 8 I/Os or1 x 16 I/Os)

The same configuration specifications applyfor the connection of compact expansionmodules.

Provided you observe these rules the sys-tem’s power supply will also be adequate toprovide the 24 V DC input required by theFX0N-232ADP communications module.

Similarly, the power supply for MMIs suchas the FX-DU control panels and MACoperator terminals is provided via thesystem’s 5 V bus.

FX2N series configuration notes

The configuration specifications forthe FX2N series permit connection ofthe following combinations of units: A maximum of 8 special function

modules or Digital expansion modules with up

to 256 I/OsPlease note that it is important to cal-culate the connected load to ensurethat the internal 5 V bus has adequatecapacity for the installed modules.

When using special function modulesyou must also check the 24 V powersupply load – the necessary 24 Vpower can be drawn from the internalservice power supply, but it may benecessary to complement this with anexternal power supply in some con-figurations.

You can calculate the precise powerload with the values provided in thetable on the next page.

MELSEC FX0N/FX2NThe Extension Concept SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Various modular and compact extensionunits are available for extending theMELSEC MELSEC FX0N/FX2N base units.

The modular extension units contain onlydigital inputs/outputs and no separatepower supply, while compact extensionunits contain a larger number of in-puts/outputs and an integrated powersupply unit for supplying the system busand the digital inputs.

The large number of possible combina-tions of base and extension units of theMELSEC FX0N/FX2N ensure that the bestpossible economical solution is found forevery application.Owing to the capacity of the internal po-wer supply unit of the respective base unitor of the compact extension unit, modularexpandability of the controller is possiblewith the help of a protected flat cable.

A base unit can be extended by a maxi-mum of 128 (FX0N series) or 256 (FX2N se-ries) external inputs/outputs by means ofthese extension units.

FX0N and FX2N series extension units canbe combined without any problems.

This special function module FX2N-4AD-TCis used for processing temperatures. It has4 independent inputs for detecting sig-nals from thermocouples of types J and K.The type of thermocouple can be chosenindependently for each point.

The electrical magnitude at an input isconverted into a digital numerical valuewith a sign. The converted value is stored bythe PLC in a memory address, so-calledbuffer memory, in the module and thenconverted. It is also possible to calculate

a mean value from a predeterminednumber of measurements in order toobtain stable digital results.

The number of measurements must betransferred by the PLC program to abuffer memory of the special functionmodule. The value determined is avail-able in another memory address.

Data Communications

The open PROFIBUS/DP network enablesextremely fast data exchange with a verywide variety of slave devices, including: Remote digital I/Os Remote intelligence PLC

(FX0N, FX2N) Frequency inverters (FR-A 024/044,

FR-A 240 and MELTRAC 140) Operator terminals (MAC) A range of other devices from third-

party manufacturers

Structure

The maximum coverage of a bus segmentis 1200 m (at a maximum of 93.75 kbit/s).Up to 3 repeaters are allowed. Thus themaximum distance between 2 stations iscalculated with 4800 m.

Cable types

To help reduce costs PROFIBUS/DP usesRS-485 technology with simple twisted-pair cabling.

Suitable cables include the UNITRONICBUSLD from Lappkabel and the DUE 4451from Alcatel.

Data exchange

The PROFIBUS AJ71PB92 andA1SJ71PB92D master modules supportslave device data exchange with up to32 send bytes and 32 receive bytes. Thismeans you can exchange a total of up to64 bytes with a slave unit per networkcycle.

Administration

In combination with the MELSEC Profi-Map configuration software theA1SJ71PB92D PROFIBUS/DP master unitgives you user-friendly plug-and-playtechnology. The configuration software isself-explanatory, using a graphical modelfor setting up the network. You simply se-lect the slave unit (e.g. FX2N), assign thestation numbers and specify where theinformation is stored in the Master CPU.

Of course, PROFIBUS/DP slaves fromMITSUBISHI ELECTRIC can also be con-nected to master devices from othermanufacturers.
