Assessing the future of CHP plants

deltalinqs, the association of the port and industrial companies in mainport rotterdam, aims to strengthen their international competitiveness and sustainable development. the problem is that coal is cheaper than gas, and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. the resulting low electricity prices, make the gas-fired industrial chp installations within the hic difficult to operate profitably.

increase in CO2 emissions

several owners and operators are therefore considering a shutdown of these plants. they would then continue

by producing steam with boilers and buying electricity from the national grid. however, the associated increase in cO2 emissions will have a negative influence on the agreed objectives in the rotterdam climate initiative. tebodin was commissioned by deltalinqs to research the future of cogeneration installations in the hic.

‘tebodin started with an inventory of the current installations, and was able to produce an accurate picture after discussing the ‘critical installations’ with the plant managers and responsible operational staff. this information was the foundation for

several scenarios with regard to the consequences of the shutdown of several chp plants,’ says mr. izak boot, tebodin’s energy consultant. the vision of the owners plays a crucial part in the final decisions. for example, striving for autonomy may make the economic return less relevant. in addition to this, there may be issues of far-reaching process integration and delivery contracts with third parties.

Practical opportunities

tebodin calculated the increase in primary energy use and cO2 emissions for several shutdown scenarios, providing deltalinqs with insight into the extent of the problem within hic. tebodin also advised on several practical opportunities to limit primary energy use, both with process measures and sustainable alternatives, and thus meet the goals of the rotterdam climate initiative.

Offshoring made easy for pharma wholesaler Orifarm

the denmark-based Orifarm group sells parallel imported and generic drugs in scandinavia and germany. at its facilities, the imported drugs are tested and repackaged with labelling in the relevant language. to remain competitive, the company must constantly monitor its cost levels, and in 2008 it decided to explore the possibility of opening facilities in a country with a better cost competitive position, including a good quality labour force equivalent to western good manufacturing practices-standards.

Cautious approach

Orifarm, in business since 1994, is not a company to rush into an offshoring

adventure. it adopted a cautious strategy with very smart first steps and one of them was finding a local engineering partner. preferably one with plenty of experience and the backing of a multinational organization.

tebodin’s czech office won the race. according to Orifarm´s project manager mr. tomas placatka, ‘tebodin stands out on account of its professional approach, offering ´turnkey service´ solutions. it has in-house experts in the full range of disciplines. i like the high-level commitment and sparring capabilities of tebodin staff, and the 100% follow-up they provide on all issues.’ the original project for

which tebodin was contracted was to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (epcm) for a new greenfield facility in velké prítocno.

40 years in the Middle East

this year, tebodin middle east celebrates its 40th anniversary. the first activities in this region started in 1974 in abu dhabi, with water projects for the water and electricity department. tebodin still strong in this segment, and, of course, the booming Oil & gas market. today, tebodin middle east operates throughout the region with 1,800 employees in offices in abu dhabi, dubai (1981), bahrain (1997), Oman (2002), qatar (2003) and the kingdom of saudi arabia (2012).

from its early days, mr. de vries was on the scene. now retired, he remains enthusiastic about his more than three decades in the region: ‘life and work in abu dhabi are inspiring; it offers so many opportunities.’

from maverick to pillar

mr. de vries, originally an aerospace engineer, joined tebodin in 1974. abu dhabi was tebodin’s first office outside the netherlands. ‘Our office was considered a bit of a maverick, while now it is a pillar of the international

network. when i first started, the country was young and undeveloped, only recently independent. there was little infrastructure - we had frequent power failures - but oil income started to flow, so we did project after project.’

from water to oil and gas

through economic and political changes in the region, the work moved from water supply projects to oil and

gas and industrial projects. to name a few big ones: ‘we worked on the masterplan for water supply in the northern emirates, in 1984. i was the man on the ground, interviewing locals with very little english. in 1994, we did a watershed pipeline project for adnOc, the state oil company - an important step in our development. in 1997, we started a long association with aluminium bahrain, providing project management and maintenance. and before i left, the focus shifted to renewable energy.’

through time, tebodin remained a stable factor in the local engineering community. many international competitors were taken over or changed name or structure, but tebodin always stayed the same, stable, image of strength and growth.

Change of course to rental waters

On consideration, however, Orifarm decided to put the project on hold and start with a small test facility, for which it rented space in an existing industrial building. when the time was right to upscale, Orifarm rented a bigger building in hostivice near prague, starting operations in 2012. since then all its repackaging activities have been relocated to hostivice.

Over the years tebodin has been providing numerous consultancy and engineering works to Orifarm. ‘as a true

partner, we take care of their needs, be they big or small. work for Orifarm is an ongoing thing, involving anything from one to several of our employees at a time. when they need something, we almost always find an in-house expert that can solve the task,’ says tebodin’s project manager mrs. lucie Švermová, ‘and in the meantime, we are keeping the permits for the velké prítocno facilities updated.’

BIM design for new Gentherm factory

gentherm is a worldwide leader in thermal technology for a variety of sectors, including the automotive industry. named gentherm after the acquisition of german company w.e.t. by the michigan -based amerigon, the company is active in 11 countries already and employees over 7,000 people worldwide. gentherm has an excellent reputation in the thermal electric and automotive industry for designing, developing and

manufacturing heating, cooling and ventilation devices such as heated seating, climate seating and all related electronics, cabling and blowers.

Prove safety mathematically: evaluating residual stresses at pipeline construction

Avoiding catastrophic failures

together, operational stresses and fatigue stresses combined with residual construction stresses may cause catastrophic failures. timely evaluation of construction stresses results in safer operations. construction stress evaluation also provides contractors with calculations for clients and authorities, to prove their procedures are safe. mr. guru prasad, pipeline engineer at tebodin in abu dhabi: ‘it is the engineer’s responsibility to determine whether to evaluate

construction residual stresses. Our pipeline team has extensive expertise.’

Conventional and unconventional situations

mr. guru: ‘we have performed detailed numerical analysis to evaluate each construction procedure, conventional or unconventional. we have done calculations for various contractor companies across the uae. projects included a calculation for pipe lifting and laying using side booms, a ground settlement calculation, and assessment

Tailor-made methodologies

construction stress evaluation requires specific expertise, says mr. guru: ‘all operational scenarios are covered in stress evaluations during detail engineering. however, concepts for stresses induced during construction are not quantified effectively in international codes. so we develop tailor-made methodologies to evaluate different construction scenarios, keeping relevant codes, practices and beam theories as a basis. for example, stress intensification factors (sif) can quantify the effects of induced stress. if the pipeline is in a critical zone, we also have some good experience in performing finite element analysis (fea) to analyze these scenarios with software tools such as abaqus and ansys.’

the scope of tebodin’s tasks comprises the full design and construction cycle, from conceptual design to permitting design and submission and from procurement to construction management of the non-process parts of the facility.

Advanced design methods

‘special attention is being paid to cost and time optimization during the production stage,’ says mr. dong, ‘as we are using 3d modeling with bim to pre-visualize the entire construction.’

‘tebodin’s use of bim technology was an important factor in the award of the contract,’ says gentherm’s project manager, mr. hans haueise, ‘a decision that was also based on their suitable

procurement strategy, good safety performance and reputation as on-site managers.’

the design stage of the new facility in vietnam started on april 2014, and the construction is due for completion on august 2015.

Bogdanka project back on track

lubelski wegiel ‘bogdanka’ s.a. is one of poland’s leading producers of hard coal (anthracite). this high-grade energetic coal is used mainly for the generation of electric and thermal energy, as well as for cement production. its key customers are industrial companies, most of all power industry players situated in east and northeast poland.

the company has set itself the target to double its production by 2015 (compared to the 2011 level). to achieve this, it has already initiated significant infrastructure investments, including the expansion of the mechanical coal processing plant to a capacity of up to 2,400 tonnes per hour.

Building in an active plant

this is an extremely challenging undertaking: the new assets, needed for complicated technological processes related to coal enrichment, have to be constructed in an active

plant amidst working machines and working people. and the deadline for the project is in september 2014.

because of the complexity of the project, at some points, operations were running increasingly behind schedule. to get a grip on the situation, management of the company, decided to appoint an external project supervisor.

Tightening up procedures

tebodin’s polish office sent a four-strong team headed by mr. mieczysław jendza. their tasks were to take stock of the state of the construction work, represent the client in meetings with the general contractor and subcontractors, verify schedule assumptions, report deviations and risks and advise on how to continue realizing the investment.

mr. jendza discusses the progress achieved since tebodin’s involvement.

when its investment prOject threatened tO Overrun its schedule, pOlish cOal mining cOmpany lubelski wegiel bOgdanka decided tO hire tebOdin as prOject supervisOr.

‘by tightening up construction site procedures and getting everyone to cooperate, we have succeeded in getting the project back on track, with completion expected in september of this year. the client, needless to say, is very pleased,’ he grins, ‘and so are we!’

Opening Feed Design Lab

tebodin is one of the partners in this project and helped to create the designs of the lab, and served in the coordination for finding partners and the right equipment.

in the feed design lab an actual working production line for feedstuffs (and animal feed) is available with which product developers, nutritionists and feedstuff technologists can test endless variations and combinations with widely diverging processing operations. they can grind, sieve, weigh, mix, dose, dry and even expand, extrude and vacuum coat under all sorts of strict conditions. it is an ideal

environment in which to conduct all sorts of trials and experiments and test all sorts of production processes without running up large costs.

the feed design lab can also serve as a small-scale production location. the development factory has a production capacity of 200 to 2,000 kg per hour.

Two EU research projects

since 2010, tebodin has been a professional partner in two eu research projects. the induse project is aimed at improving international design standards for above ground piping and equipment under earthquake conditions, while the gipipe project investigates what happens to buried pipelines in earthquakes and other large ground-induced actions, such as landslides. the knowledge gained in these research projects is already being applied in the netherlands, where gas production induced earthquakes pose a potential threat, but is likely to benefit seismic and landslide areas all over the world. the results were presented at international symposia in corfu, greece and, this spring, at delft university of technology, the netherlands.

Janssen Biologics: ice-cold delivery

janssen biologics, a subsidiary of johnson & johnson, produces innovative drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular and immunological diseases and of cancer. the production process involves pre-formulated pharmaceutical bulk products which are very expensive – and very sensitive to spoilage. even a relatively brief hiccup in the production line could lead to end products that were unfit for use, leading to significant costs for the company.

Minus 40 degrees

tebodin proposed a solution to keep the bulk products in perfect condition and readily available: a freezer complex adjacent to the production line. the concept was based on 17-foot containers, providing plenty of storage room, with a minus 40 degrees celsius blast freezer to ensure that products are frozen very quickly, which minimizes the risk of damage to their structure. special designs in electrical and control systems were required to secure reliability and redundancy for storage of these high-value products.

fast realization

kicking off in august 2013 with a first feasibility study for this new facility, tebodin went on to develop engineering and design and continued with a successful fast-track project realization performing epcm services. the construction started in march 2014 and was completed in june.

working for tebodin on this project are engineers mr. peter adrichem, mr. rene

duineveld and mr. jaap meijvogel. ‘it takes good planning and excellent cooperation to realize a project of this scale in such a short time,’ says mr. adrichem. ‘but our relationship with janssen biologics goes back a long time, to when the company still bore the name centocor. we know the client’s

cocoa is a high-value crop grown predominantly by smallholder farmers.consumption of cocoa continues to grow at about 3% or 60,000-90,000 mega tonnes per year. projections show that global production is lagging behind the increasing demand, indicating a clear need for expanded production, especially of higher quality cocoa.this has impact on investment projects throughout the value chain, from cocoa bean processing, manufacturing of chocolate and chocolate-based products (confectionery).tebodin has built up significant expertise over the last decade to make production facilities ranging from storage facilities, cocoa bean processing plants, chocolate factories and plants for the production of chocolate drinks and confectionery in various countries around the world.

services include consultancy (site selection studies, due diligence surveys, environmental studies and permitting) as well as full design and engineering, procurement and project and construction management.since tebodin has more than 50 offices in 25 countries, it has strong local work forces fully aware of local rules, norms and standards making the realization of projects swiftly, safely and efficiently.

furthermore, the fact that we are deeply rooted in the agro industry and food sector and are fully au fait with the rules of the game when it comes to issues like hygienic design, means that we are able to transfer your investment plans into a commercial reality.

New logistic terminal for the LDPE4 production line

slOvnaft, producer of motor fuels, fuel oils and petrochemical products, sees a big market opportunity in the growing demand for ldpe. the biggest petrochemical company of slovakia already produces this thermoplastic that is made from oil and used for the manufacturing of, for example, plastic bags, trays, containers, packaging material and six pack rings. but now slOvnaft wants to increase its annual ldpe production capacity to 220,000 tons. this investment will result in a cost-effective and a more eco-friendly way of production.

demanding requirements

to meet its goals, slOvnaft is building a new production line of ldpe and a logistic terminal in bratislava, slovakia. the construction of the new production line of ldpe and the logistic terminal already started mid-2013; the estimated completion is scheduled for 2015.

talke was awarded by slOvnaft to build the new logistic terminal for the new ldpe4 unit. this german company provides logistic solutions for the chemical and petrochemical industries. since talke has no engineering office in slovakia, the company commissioned part of the engineering and project management scope to tebodin. ‘we did several successful projects with tebodin in other countries’ says mr. faissal boujadayni, project manager of talke. ‘they supported us during the tendering phase with slOvnaft and helped us to prepare the permit documentation, ippc, detail

engineering, procurement of both civil and electrical installations.’ according to him, talke and tebodin are preparing more projects in different countries.

Understand client’s needs

for the logistic terminal tebodin manages all design, procurement and construction work for the civil part of the project. the epcm contract consists of building permit documentation, ippc, detail engineering, procurement of both civil and electrical installations, a hazOp study and construction management of the civil part. ‘to meet slOvnaft’s demanding requirements, we have to use their standards and know-how. we rely on our network expertise and in some cases we
