An association of well-established Czech companies has developed a modern technology for biomass combustion, which is characterised by integration of proven technological solutions into an efficient unit. It features elements enabling the combustion of a wide range of biomas fuels, while maximising heat utilisation. Namely:

The unit is fully automatic, does not need permanent operators and is distinguished by high user comfort. The control PLC unit is placed in the power distribution box of the technology. On the door of the box there is a panel, enabling the input of parameters of the automatic control system. Control of the unit is also possible through operator's PC station. It is further possible to equip the unit with a system for sending information about the unit's operation by SMS, or even with a full remote control system working through a web interface. Involved in the research and development of the unit is Brno University of Technology that applies modern simulation and computational tools leading to sophisticated design solutions. The research and development of this unit is also supported by the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade in the framework of project Impuls FI-IM3/166.

Deliveries of the boiler-houses are performed jointly by an association of Czech companies with a wide experience in this area. The association covers completely the whole deliveries from technological design through construction project, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and training of operators. Therefore, no foreign suppliers enter the construction project, which makes it cheaper and quicker. Further to that, fast and high quality servicing is also ensured.

In the framework of the Impuls project, testing boiler-house has been constructed, which enables the combustion of various kinds of biomass fuels. The unit enables performing tests with the goal of optimising the design for each specific application. This approach secures trouble-free deliveries of custom-made units including the selection of suitable fuels that are available at the application's locality.

The heat from biomass may be used for the generation of various forms of energy. The units are

Warm-water and hot-water boiler-houses (including heat distribution networks and appliances)

Wide possibilities of combusting various kinds of biomass and phytomass.

The possibility to install two separate conveyors for wood-chip biomass and for stalky phytomass => concurrent and separate combustion of wood chips, sawdust, agricultural plant residues or planted energy crops.

Flue gas recirculation => increase of boiler efficiency, intensification of biomass pyrolysing processes on the boiler grate.

Utilisation of the heat of flue gas before stack in a special heat exchanger, serving as combustion air preheater => increase of boiler efficiency.

High efficiency of the boiler is reflected in lower fuel consumption.

All specific requirements can be tested during the project preparatory phase in a testing biomass combustion unit. Customers are invited to visit the testing unit in advance.

The team of producers consists of Czech companies that jointly cover all stages of the deliveries. Experts from Czech Universities provide additional expertise as required.

The producers collaborate with the Mendel University of agriculture and Forestry in Brno, which is helpful in finding a suitable fuel for any given region as well as specialist advice for growing the fuel or obtaining it from local farmers.

At the present, biomass is used more and more often as a renewable primary source of energy for heating, hot utility water production, and increasingly also for electricity cogeneration.

In most applications, so-called “green” biomass is utilised, which means that for compliance with applicable regulations it is not necessary to equip the boiler-plant with any special flue gas cleaning equipment. In reality however, a large fraction of biomass cannot be classified as “green” due to various kinds of contamination. Similar situation exists also for alternative fuels. The combustion process of such fuels may produce excessive amounts of harmful compounds. In these cases, the boiler-house technology must be modified, mainly its flue gas cleaning part.

When compared to classical boiler-houses firing “green” biomass, the combustion part of the technology is modified and the flue gas cleaning section is completely different. The employed technology is modern and we have a number of successful references even in more demanding industrial flue gas cleaning applications. Our solution is based on flue gas cleaning by dry adsorption, which means that a small amount of multi-component adsorbent is injected into the flue gas stream where it reacts with the harmful compounds. The spent adsorbent together with fly ash is removed from the flue gas by filtration. This technology is able to remove all relevant pollutant species, namely solid particulate matter, SO , HCl, HF, heavy metals and 2

PCDD/F.

Besides heat generation, we offer our customers the possibility to expand their biomass combustion unit to include also power generation. The energy released in biomass combustion is firstly used for production of electricity and only afterwards for heating. This concept is called co-generation and constitutes one of the most efficient ways for biomass utilisation both environmentally and economically. Our technological solution respects the fact that the primary target of the boiler is generation of heat. Under the valid legislation, which supports the production of electricity from renewable sources, the sale of “green” power for high prices guaranteed by the law is an economically attractive option.

Typical layout of our technologies for heat and power cogeneration is in the figure above. The cogeneration technology for our boilers from 1 to 3 MW is based on the “classical” Rankin water steam circuit with expansion on a turbine or steam engine. Steam with the required parameters is generated in a medium-pressure steam generator, connected to the combustion chamber. The steam expanding on a turbine or in a steam engine drives the coupled power generator. After exit from the power generation section, steam is used to heat up utility water in a heat exchanger unit. As an alternative, steam may be used directly for technological purposes. Upon condensation, steam is pumped back into the boiler.

Concrete technological solution of the water steam expansion module (based either on a turbine or on a volumetric steam engine) is assessed and designed individually for each application in order to ensure compliance with the following requirements:

Cost-effective, technically undemanding design

Fully automatic and reliable unit with low operating costs

Good internal thermodynamic efficiency in the whole control range of the boiler

The technology for power and heat cogeneration may be delivered as a turn key delivery, similarly as the basic technology (i.e. generating only heat), or in limits set by the customer. Integral part of the preparatory phase in each delivery is optimisation calculation that maximises the power generation efficiency while satisfying individual requirements for supply of heat.

In the preparatory phase of the investment project it is offered to provide the customer with an economical analysis of the sale of heat and electricity from biomass. We also help our customers with the administrative tasks connected to the sale of electricity.

Friendly to the environment and economically beneficial heating using biomass becomes nowadays more and more widespread due to its indisputable advantages that are further increased by governmental support. Even though the process of obtaining subsidies and their subsequent administration is not simple, we are able to provide the potential recipients with qualified advice and significant help.

Our association delivers warm and hot water boiler-houses in the medium-duty range (1 to 3 MW in the heating water). These technologies are suitable mainly for:

Local heating of large buildings like schools, hospitals, administrative buildings, production plants, storage warehouses, various technological spaces

Central district heating of villages and housing estates

In the case of district heating we deliver also infrastructure including distribution networks, individual house connections and the heat consumption measuring system.
