July 1: Signed C Dave Bolland (Toronto), LW Jussi Jokinen (Pittsburgh), LW Shawn Thornton (Boston), C Derek MacKenzie (Columbus), D Willie Mitchell (Los Angeles) and G Al Montoya (Winnipeg). Offseason Departures D Tom Gilbert (unrestricted free agent, signed by Montreal); C Jesse Winchester (unrestricted free agent, signed by Colorado); G Scott Clemmensen (unrestricted free agent, signed by New Jersey); RW Krys Barch (unrestricted free agent); D Matt Gilroy (unrestricted free agent); C Scott Gomez (unrestricted free agent); D Ed Jovanovski (unrestricted free agent); D Ryan Whitney (unrestricted free agent); D Mike Mottau (retired). Notes * After spending the last two seasons as an assistant with the Montreal Canadiens, Gerard Gallant takes over the coaching reins in Florida. Gallant’s lone other head-coaching stint in the NHL came with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2003-07, when he compiled a 56-76-10 record over 142 games. Gallant also spent three seasons as the head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL (2009-12), where one of his star players was Panthers LW and 2012-13 Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau. * Following an eight-year run in Vancouver, the Panthers re-acquired G Roberto Luongo at the 2014 Trade Deadline. Luongo ranks first among Panthers goaltenders in career wins (114), shutouts (27) and games played (331). He also owns the franchise marks for wins (35) and appearances (75) by a goaltender in a single season, both set in 2005-06 – his last full campaign in Sunrise. Luongo went 6-7-1 with a 2.46 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and one shutout in 14 appearances following his return in March. * The Panthers made a splash on the opening day of free agency with the acquisitions of veterans C Dave Bolland, LW Jussi Jokinen, LW Shawn Thornton, C Derek MacKenzie, D Willie Mitchell and G Al Montoya. Jokinen led the group with 57 points (21-36—57) in 2013-14, while Mitchell captured his second Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings. * The Panthers selected D Aaron Ekblad from the Barrie Colts (OHL) with the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, marking the 13th time in NHL history – and first time since 2006 (Erik Johnson, STL) – a defenseman has been taken with the top choice. Ekblad became the second No. 1 overall selection in Panthers history, following Ed Jovanovski in 1994.

LOS ANGELES KINGS Offseason Acquisitions (w/ previous rights) July 1: Signed RW Adam Cracknell (St. Louis) and LW David Van der Gulik (Colorado). Offseason Departures RW Linden Vey (traded to Vancouver); D Willie Mitchell (unrestricted free agent, signed by Florida); D Andrew Campbell (unrestricted free agent, signed by Arizona); C Colin Fraser (unrestricted free agent, signed by St. Louis). Notes * After needing 44 seasons to capture their first Stanley Cup in 2011-12, the Kings waited just two years to again reach the top of the NHL summit in 2013-14. They will look to become the first team to win three Stanley Cups over a four-year span since the Edmonton Oilers did so from 1987-90. The Kings also will try to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Detroit Red Wings did so in 1997 and 1998. * RW Justin Williams’ postseason heroics earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Williams tallied 25 points (9-16—25) in 26 games of a playoff run full of clutch performances, leading all players in multi-point games (7) and plus-minus (+13). He set career highs for goals, assists and points in a single playoff year. * D Drew Doughty set a Kings playoff scoring record for defensemen and led all League blueliners in playoff scoring, tallying 18 points (5-13—18) in 26 games. Doughty broke his own franchise record set during the Kings’ Stanley Cup run in 2012 (4-12—16 in 20 GP). He logged a total of 747:33 in ice time during the postseason (28:45 per game), the most by any player in a single playoff year since ice time was added as an official statistic in 1997-98. * After being acquired by the Kings at the Trade Deadline, RW Marian Gaborik posted 3-9—12 in his final 10 games of the regular season and then led all skaters with 14 goals in 26 playoff contests (he had 18 goals in 54 postseason games prior to 2013-14). * G Jonathan Quick won his first career William M. Jennings Trophy in 2013-14 as the goaltender who plays at least 25 games for the club allowing the fewest goals (174). He compiled a 27-17-4 record with a 2.07 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and six shutouts in 49 appearances, surpassing Rogie Vachon as the winningest goaltender in team history (176) and moving within one of Vachon’s franchise record for shutouts (31).

Notes * A series of injuries required Minnesota to adopt a goaltender-by-committee approach as the Wild became the first playoff team since the 2005-06 Edmonton Oilers to have four goalies make at least 10 starts. In all, seven different netminders saw action for Minnesota. Nonetheless, the Wild tied a franchise record and shared fourth place in the NHL in shutouts (8) and ranked seventh overall in goals against per game (2.42). Josh Harding posted a 18-7-3 record in 29 appearances and topped the League in save percentage (.933). * D Ryan Suter logged a League-leading 2,411:54 of ice time last season, the most by an NHL player since Brian Leetch of the New York Rangers played 2,449:19 in 1998-99. Suter joined an elite group of four Hall of Famers – Leetch, Ray Bourque, Chris Chelios and Nicklas Lidstrom – to eclipse 2,400 minutes in a single season since the League began recording time on ice as an official statistic in 1997-98. Suter played at least 30 minutes 37 times in 2013-14. * Free agent LW Thomas Vanek will be familiar in his ‘new’ surroundings – the former University of Minnesota star has lived in the State of Hockey since leaving the Golden Gophers for the NHL nine seasons ago. Vanek notched 113 points over two college seasons, leading Minnesota to college hockey’s ultimate prize as NCAA Tournament MVP in 2003. Vanek arrives at Xcel Energy Center with an impressive NHL scoring résumé that includes 277 goals in 663 career games.
