Dear McLoughlin Families,
We always look for ways to promote kindness, empathy and support for one another. One of the common messages right now is, “YOUR WORDS MATTER.” We are working to make sure that each and every interaction we have, whether it’s in the hallways, in the classroom or in the cafeteria, is positive and uplifting. We know that words have the power to help or hurt. We are working on small and big ways to focus on the ways our words can hurt or uplift someone else. We are also challenging students to be thoughtful and aware of slang words or labels that can be ugly and hurtful. These are not acceptable here. We know that focusing on compliments, kindness and positive language will make our school a better place to be. We also celebrate our classified support staff this week. March 4th – 8th is declared as CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES APPRECIATION WEEK. Our classified staff are the heart and soul of our buildings and we know we couldn’t do it without them. We are truly grateful for their contribution to our school! As always, we are here to support all students and families in their academic journey. Please reach out to a staff member if there is any way we can support your student.
Respectfully, Kelly Soter Principal
I’m not Mr. Happening , but here’s what’s “Happeny” in English Class. Creative Writing (Publishing’s); Informational Writing (How-to Guides); Vocabulary & Sentence Work; Long Term Goals emphasis; evaluating credible sources using Ethos, Pathos, Logos; and we’re beginning our Argumentation Unit, where we’ll be reading, writing, and speaking arguments, arguments, arguments. In the Social Sciences, our students are learning about the 19th century westward expansion. After studying how those western lands became a part of the U.S., our focus has been on how that expansion affected the indigenous peoples, primarily the Native Americans. After spring break, we will spend 2 weeks on the economics of personal finance and then dive into the social, political and economic factors that contributed to the Civil War. Good stuff! Team 82 Science classes are working hard gearing up for our Frog dissections! We are learning about comparative anatomy as well as a variety of body systems and how they function. The frog dissections will help us see those systems in place. From here, we will be moving into our Newtonian Physics unit. We will be experimenting with Newton’s laws, kinetic and potential energy and gravitational forces through a variety of hands-on movement labs! Art and Math have a lot in common with each other. We are studying symmetry; reflection, rotational and transitional transformation on a coordinate grid. You can see the math in art and art in math. Patterns, shapes, geometry, symmetry, spatial reasoning, proportional reason, etc…. are all a part of art, as they are of mathematics. symmetry exists everywhere. For some of us, Symmetry is pleasing to the eye. Design and art places a lot of importance in symmetry. Students interested in architecture, or other creative fields, rely heavily on symmetry. Math and art: Who would have thought?
Families Please mark your calendars for March 12th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This is our annual Title 1 Parent Night. Our School Resource Officer (SRO), Officer Arturo Vega and South Medford’s SRO Officer, Mike Jackson, will give a presentation on “Social Media and the Unknown Risks to Students”. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:00 pm, and childcare will be provided (school aged children only please). Every Mac student that attends the training with his or her parent / guardian will receive a free book! Please RSVP to be entered in the raffle for a basket of McLoughlin gear! MAC Clubs are underway. If your child would like to be part of a club, see Mrs. Boekenoogen in the office for a club flyer and sign up today. Each student is offered a snack-meal and busing home. There are a couple spots left in Certain clubs and the Academic Tutoring Club is always open for drop-in’s to meet the tutoring needs of every Mac student! Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions you may have. Shelli Campos,

Track season is starting March 4th. With 125 students
already signed up to participate, track is by far the largest
sport here at McLoughlin. We have three home track meets
this year and it will take a lot of volunteer help and team
work to make them successful. All of our home meets are
held at Spiegelberg Stadium where the atmosphere is full of
school spirit and fun! We have a mandatory meeting for the
parents of track athletes on Wednesday, March 6th, at
5:45 pm in the black gym. There
will be a sign up sheet at the
meeting for parents and
volunteers who wish to help at
any or all three meets. Please
consider being a part of MAC
Track by supporting our athletes.
For Questions, contact
Lisa Keepes at 541-842-3727.
Yearbooks are on sale now! Do not
forget to reserve your copy. As a
reminder, yearbooks are delivered to
students the last week of school. All
library books and textbooks will need
to be turned in, and all fines and fees
will need to be paid, before a student
will receive their yearbook. If you
would like to purchase a yearbook for
your student, you may do so from any
of our office staff for $25.00.
There are exciting things happening with
our Booster Club and we would love for
you to be a part of our team! McLoughlin’s
Booster Club meets the first Wednesday of
every month at 6:00 pm in the Media
Center. Come join Mrs. Soter, staff and
other parents in supporting the McLoughlin
student body.
Upcoming meetings: March 6th and April 3rd
As you might already know, McLoughlin is full of outstanding students; students that are smart, kind, accepting, gracious etc. One of the ways we recognize these individual students is by selecting a Student of the Month. Monthly, team teachers select a student from each team that they feel exemplify one or more of these character traits. We are proud to announce, and want to congratulate, the following students selected for the month of February. February: Team 61 - Zackary Bolf
Team 71 - Lauren Carpenter
Team 72 - Molly Brock
Team 73 - Brayden Comer
Team 81 - Sonia Mendoza
Team 82 - Dylan Willis
Team 83 - Spencer Workman
Team 74 - Caleb Ashley-Stevens
Team 73 - Jesse Reames
In Technology class this year, students are able to use state-of-the-art equipment to design, build and test almost anything. They are learning to develop the technological, problem-solving and hands-on skills desired by employers. Students are given the opportunity to explore fabrication technologies such as 3D printers, lasers and vinyl cutters to transform a product idea into its tangible form and then sell it on our online store. They also explore many interrelated career fields, including engineering, science, mathematics, art, graphic design, computer aided design (CAD), electronics and entrepreneurship. In Robotics, students are learning about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics® platform to design, build and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths, race cars and robotic arms. Students who take Technology and/or Robotics are able to join our Mac SkillsUSA chapter. We have 12 students who are getting ready to head to Clackamas, March 14th-16th, for state competition. Students who earn gold in certain competitions at state will be eligible for national competition in Kentucky the last week of June. SkillsUSA is a dynamic and career-oriented leadership organization focused on individual success at home, the classroom, the community and the workplace. The program helps students develop personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics. It offers countless opportunities to showcase skills in competitive events where students can compete for scholarships, prizes and awards while earning recognition that looks great on a resume and college applications.
