All recycling and trash data are submitted as weights instead of volume. This can be done in either pounds or metric kilograms. Reported weights

should be based on actual observed recycling and trash generation. Participating schools must collect and report data for 10 weeks.

Did you know that USF ranked 152 out of 191 schools in the Per Capita Classic' Division of Recyclemania in 2010? This particular division is composed of

schools trying to compete to see who has the highest cumulative recyclables per pound per person in which USF came in at 2.25. 'Waste Minimization',another division USF was entered in is composedof schools that arecompeting to see who has the least amount of municipal solid waste per person. Outof 106 participating schools in the Waste Minimization competition, USFranked 25th. USF ended up with 14.18 cumulative wastes in pounds per person inthe end of Recyclemania. In the Grand Champion competition division, the school results that participate in both the Per Capita Classic and the Waste

Minimization categories are combined and the school that shows the greatest achievement in source reduction and recycling are ranked. Out of 144

    W H Y Y O U S H O U L D C A R E .

A single plastic bottle provides enough energy topower a computer for 25 minutes.

Recycling one ton of mixed paper has the ability to

save 17 trees and 4200 kilowatt hours of

    electricity.

Recycling 100 lbs of glass can light a 100 watt

bulb for 290 hours, and is enough to play a radio

three hours a day for four months.

Americans use four million plastic bottles every

hour, but only one quarter of them will be recycled.

Think throwing out a plastic bottle will make it go

away? A plastic bottle will take 700 years before it

    will even start to decompose.

According to local studies, between 2-5% pf the

waste stream we compile is reusable.

There are more than 6,000 reuse centers around

the country, ranging from specialized programs for

building materials or unneeded materials in

schools to local programs such as goodwill and

the Salvation Army, according to the Reuse

    Development Organization.

Enough plastic wrap is used every year in the US

to cover the entire state of Texas.

A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the

grocery shelf as a new can, in as little as 60 days.

An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be acan 500 years from now.
