Take in account others factors (oral, written, use of the language)
Teaching vocabulary
It is important to take into account
aspects of lexis when we teach
vocabulary
-Boundaries between conceptual meaning
-Polysemy - Homonymy- Homophyny- Synonymy
- Affective meaning- Style, register, dialect
- Traslation - Chunks of language
- Pronuntiation
Memory and storage systems
Understanding how our memory works might help us create more effective ways to teach vocabulary
Short – term memory
- Retention is not effective if the
number of chunks exceeds
seven
Long –term memory
- It can hold any amount of
information
Exists important memory strategies
to aid learning
Applying images and sounds : ussing imagery , semantic mapping , using
keywords
Creating mental
linkages : grouping ,
associating , placing new
word into context
Employing action : physical
response or sensation ,
using mechanical techniques
Reviewing well , in a structured way
Main ways to deal with meaning
Knowledge of word formation
Using dictionaries
Contextual guesswork
Guided discovery
Using language
Teachers have to promote motivation
Based on Their awareness
of students needs and preferences
The lexical approach ( by Lewis )
- The importance of vocabulary as being basic to communication - - If learners do not recognise the meaning of keywords they will be
unable to participate in the conversation - - grammar is equally important in teaching as vocabulary .
- -Make students aware of chunks .
Rationale of the lesson
Students have to notice collocations and deal with meaning .-Group work helps to exchange knowledge.
-Make students use the language in realist context .
