1 Shortly after Saul died, David returned to Ziklag from his rout of the Amalekites.

2 Three days later a man showed up unannounced from Saul's army camp.

3 David asked, "What brings you here?" He answered, "I've just escaped from the camp

of Israel."

4 "So what happened?" said David. "What's the news?" He said, "The Israelites have

fled the battlefield, leaving a lot of their dead comrades behind. And Saul and his son

Jonathan are dead."

5 David pressed the young soldier for details: "How do you know for sure that Saul and

Jonathan are dead?"

6 "I just happened by Mount Gilboa and came on Saul, badly wounded and leaning on

his spear, with enemy chariots and horsemen bearing down hard on him.

7 He looked behind him, saw me, and called me to him. 'Yes sir,' I said, 'at your ser-

vice.'

8 He asked me who I was, and I told him, 'I'm an Amalekite.'"

9 "Come here," he said, "and put me out of my misery. I'm nearly dead already, but my

life hangs on."

10 "So I did what he asked - I killed him. I knew he wouldn't last much longer anyway.

I removed his royal headband and bracelet, and have brought them to my master. Here

they are."

11 In lament, David ripped his clothes to ribbons. All the men with him did the same.

12 They wept and fasted the rest of the day, grieving the death of Saul and his son Jona-

than, and also the army of God and the nation Israel, victims in a failed battle.

13 Then David spoke to the young soldier who had brought the report: "Who are you,

anyway?" "I'm from an immigrant family - an Amalekite."

14 "Do you mean to say," said David, "that you weren't afraid to up and kill God's

anointed king?"

15 Right then he ordered one of his soldiers, "Strike him dead!" The soldier struck him,

and he died.

16 "You asked for it," David told him. "You sealed your death sentence when you said

you killed God's anointed king."

2 Samuel 1:17-27 17 Then David sang this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan,

18 and gave orders that everyone in Judah learn it by heart. Yes, it's even inscribed in

The Book of Jashar.

19 Oh, oh, Gazelles of Israel, struck down on your hills, the mighty warriors - fallen,

fallen!

20 Don't announce it in the city of Gath, don't post the news in the streets of Ashkelon.

Don't give those coarse Philistine girls one more excuse for a drunken party!

21 No more dew or rain for you, hills of Gilboa, and not a drop from springs and wells,

For there the warriors' shields were dragged through the mud, Saul's shield left there to

rot.

22 Jonathan's bow was bold - the bigger they were the harder they fell. Saul's sword

was fearless - once out of the scabbard, nothing could stop it.

23 Saul and Jonathan - beloved, beautiful! Together in life, together in death. Swifter

than plummeting eagles, stronger than proud lions.

24 Women of Israel, weep for Saul. He dressed you in finest cottons and silks, spared

no expense in making you elegant.

25 The mighty warriors - fallen, fallen in the middle of the fight! Jonathan - struck

down on your hills!

26 O my dear brother Jonathan, I'm crushed by your death. Your friendship was a mira-

cle-wonder, love far exceeding anything I've known - or ever hope to know.

27 The mighty warriors - fallen, fallen. And the arms of war broken to bits.

2 Samuel 2:1-7 1 After all this, David prayed. He asked God, "Shall I move to one of the cities of

Judah?" God said, "Yes, move." "And to which city?" "To Hebron."

2 So David moved to Hebron, along with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abi-

gail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.

3 David's men, along with their families, also went with him and made their home in

and around Hebron.

4 The citizens of Judah came to Hebron, and then and there made David king over the

clans of Judah.

5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead: "God bless you for this - for hon-

oring your master, Saul, with a funeral.

6 God honor you and be true to you - and I'll do the same, matching your generous act

of goodness.

7 Strengthen your resolve and do what must be done. Your master, Saul, is dead. The

citizens of Judah have made me their king."

Item 5, For Lesson Three, Discussion Plan—

Step 2, Interview Script

King David, you have been in the news a lot lately. Why did you decide to

bring the ark to Jerusalem? Why did you gather such an immense army?

Were you expecting trouble?

Uzzah, you seem familiar with the ark. Can you tell us a little about the ark,

and how you knew so much about it?

Whose idea was it to place the ark on a cart?

King David, what is with all the musical instruments? Were you having a

party?

Uzzah, how did the cart ride turn out for you? Why was taking the ark down

the hill by cart such a big deal? Did you intend to dishonor God when you

touched the ark?

King David, this was not one of your best moments. How did you feel after

Uzzah’s death? And what did you do with the ark?

Parent Phrases

Item 7, For Lesson Eight, Discussion Plan—

Step 1, Parent Phrases

If you keep making that face, it will freeze that way.

If you behave like a child I’ll treat you like one.

Be quiet. I can’t hear myself think.

One day, you’ll thank me.

Because I said so. That’s why!

If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?

Someone better be bleeding.

Stop crying, or I’ll give you something to cry about.

You’d better wipe that look off your face.

Don’t make me stop this car!

Step 1, Famous Lies

Famous Lies

Richard Nixon denied any role in Watergate.

American swimmer Ryan Lochte falsely claimed to have been robbed at

gunpoint during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Failed commercial artist Mark Landis spent three decades copying famous

paintings and donating them to art museums as originals, while posing as a

philanthropic Jesuit priest, because of the respect it earned him.

Eight members of the Chicago ‘White Sox baseball team accepted a bribe

to lose the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.

From 1919 to 1920, Italian immigrant Charles Ponzi earned up to $250,000

per day by scamming investors in a postal coupon pyramid scheme.

In 1912, Charles Dawson and British Natural History Museum geologist

Arthur Smith Woodward conned the scientific world by announcing the

discovery of Piltdown Man—the so-called “missing link,” which turned

out to be a orangutan jaw with filed-down teeth attached to a human skull.

The White Star Line claimed their ship, the Titanic, was unsinkable, even

though its safety features did not meet the standards of that day..

For seven years, seven-time Tour De France winning cyclist Lance Arm-

strong claimed that he never used drugs until finally confessing in 2013

that he had cheated.

Twentieth-century artist Han Van Meegeren conned people out of millions

of dollars by baking his forged Vermeer paintings in an oven to make them

look older.

Case Studies

Ignaz Semmelweis was a nineteenth-century Hungarian obstetrician

(doctor specializing in childbirth). Around 1847, he realized that if he

washed his hands before touching patients, fewer women contracted fever

and diseases, or died in childbirth. However, other medical professionals

ridiculed him for what they believed was a crazy idea, so crazy, in fact, that

some of them lured him into an insane asylum, beat him, and locked him

up there until he died within weeks.

In the early nineteenth century, most doctors blamed the spread of disease

on foul air. But after three of his five children died of infectious diseases,

French scientist Louis Pasteur concluded that germs were the real cause of

contagion and dedicated himself to proving it. When he published his re-

search findings in the 1850’s, the entire medical community responded

with ridicule and resistance.

Claude Monet was born in France in 1840. By the time he was ten, Real-

ism had begun dominating the art world. Monet, though, saw his surround-

ings through different eyes. When as a thirty-year-old he began producing

his impressionistic paintings, all of Paris mocked his talent and rejected his

work.

Psalm 51 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to

your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniq-

uity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against

you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are

right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at

birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faith-

fulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter

than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed

rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do

not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to

me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior,

and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my

mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring

it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken

spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offer-

ings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

2 Samuel 24:10-25 10 David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to

the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, LORD, I beg you, take away

the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing. 11 Before David got up the

next morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: 12 “Go

and tell David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one

of them for me to carry out against you.’ ” 13 So Gad went to David and said to him,

“Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing

from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now

then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.” 14 David said

to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is

great; but do not let me fall into human hands.” 15 So the LORD sent a plague on Israel

from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the peo-

ple from Dan to Beersheba died. 16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Je-

rusalem, the LORD relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was af-

flicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the LORD was then at

the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 When David saw the angel who was strik-

ing down the people, he said to the LORD, “I have sinned; I, the shepherd, have done

wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall on me and my

family.” 18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to

the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up, as

the LORD had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and

his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his

face to the ground. 21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”

“To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the LORD,

that the plague on the people may be stopped.” 22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord

the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering,

and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 Your Majesty, Arau-

nah gives all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the LORD your God ac-

cept you.” 24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will

not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David

bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for

them. 25 David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellow-

ship offerings. Then the LORD answered his prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague

on Israel was stopped.
