Some important dates are:– 1961 – John F. Kennedy encouraged contractors working with the
government to hire employees w/o regard to race– President Johnson extended and required certain businesses to have
hiring plans that added minorities to their companies– 1964 – Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act banned racial
discrimination in employment and created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
– 1970 – Supreme Court began hearing challenges– 1978- Allan Bakke, a white medical student, sued University of
California at Davis for admitting minorities with much lower scores than his
– Affirmative Action ended with President Reagan– 1995 – University of California voted to discontinue Affirmative Action

Get rid of it• No longer needed because women
are now treated equally– 57% of all college students are female– Since 1990, women have earned more
baccalaureate degrees than men
• Was originally designed to make up for slavery, but many of the “blacks” that are admitted to university are actually first or second generation immigrants from countries like Ghana or Nigeria
• Many minorities feel insecure on campuses and at jobs b/c they feel like they have to prove themselves
We need it• White men still have the most power
– At the end of the 20th century, only 16% of blacks held profession or managerial positions, compared with 31% for whites
– Women own 39% of contracting firms, but less than 3% of federal contracts go to firms owned by women
• A 1993 study found that companies with hiring practices that valued women and minorities performed 24% better in the stock market than those who did not
• Affirmative action corrects the terrible injuries that U.S. culture has allowed for centuries
