Teaching Online Scenarios:Class, Seminar & Practical

Previously known as a lecture, a class is a session in which a teacher presents to students enrolled in a unit of study generally in a lecture theatre. If you have classes in your unit, use the following flow-chart to guide your decision on whether, and how, to adapt this to the online learning environment.

Use desktop capture to record yourself narrating Powerpoint slides

Create short, chunked videos interspersed with prompts to engage in activities. Use discussion forums or polls to capture outcomes as required.

Convert material to text with prompts to engage in activities. Use discussion forums or polls to capture outcomes as required.

For fewer than 250 students, consider delivering class via BbCollaborate

Deliver the class via BbCollaborate

If you can, offer multiple classes via BbCollaborate

If activity involves participants and observers (e.g. a debate or performance), have the participants attend a BbCollaborate session and provide the recording for observers.

If slides or visual prompts aren’t required, consider recording audio only to reduce bandwidth

Convert some material to text, interspersed with short videos on key concepts

Seminar

Previously referred to as a ‘tutorial’ or ‘workshop’, a seminar is an interactive meeting for smaller groups of students. If you have seminars in your unit, use the following flow-chart to guide your decision on whether, and how, to adapt these to the online learning environment.

You can offer online seminars via BbCollaborate. Note that you may need to change some acvitivities or adapt how you run them for online environments.

Good, duplicate this for the ‘on-campus’ seminar groups using BbCollaborate.

Great, consider alternative, asynchronous options such as discussion forums, blog or video posts, or polling to support students to engage in the activities.

Practical

Practical work or practical sessions are a component of some units (and programs) that require laboratory in the field or hands-on techniques. If you have practical sessions in your unit, use the following flow-chart to guide your decision on whether, and how, to adapt these to the online learning environment.

Great, in that case you will not need to offer the practical session in these circumstances. You may like to consider providing some online resources (e.g. demo videos or simulations) instead.

Support students to access and use these substitutes to do the activity themselves. Provide video demos. If required, students can submit videos/images or demonstrate competency in BB Collaborate.

Great, you can offer the session through asynchronous options, including text and video guides, or synchronously via BbCollaborate.

Make use of collaboration tools such as MS Teams, BbCollaborate. or Zoom.
