Why teach nutrition?“Healthy eating patterns in childhood and
adolescence promote optimal health, growth, and intellectual development” -Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Guidelines for School Health Programs to Promote Lifelong Healthy Eating, MMWR 1996;45 (N0.RR-9), p.1.

Connection to Academic Success

Nutrition - Literacy Connections
Activity: Glorious Foods
Circle any food and drinks you had yesterday if an exact food isn’t there, circle a food that is
similar (e.g. circle pork chops for pork tenderloin)
Fold page in half and then in to thirds to make six equal sections
Four sections each represent a food group and the last section represents ‘other food’ compare to food guide, use for goal setting

Nutrition - Literacy Connections
Activity: Rhyme Time
Reading and writing nutrition and food related rhymes
classroom activity, school wide activity, publish in newsletter
Connect topic to grade specific healthy eating expectations, connect to music
DPA connection - match each rhyme to a card suit and action or pick a card and class reads related rhyme while performing related action

Numeracy ConnectionsSugar Activity
Guess and count amount of sugarMake sugar models (amount in a can of Coke)
1 tsp sugar = 4g sugar (4.2g) Suggested max 6tsp added sugar per day Calculate for repeated days/months
Nutrition Facts Table look at sugar, sugar calculations over time Graph amounts of sugar vs. other nutrients

Numeracy Connections Activity: Cooking in
The Classroom
Kids love to cook! Halving and doubling the recipe 1 tsp is what fraction of a tbsp? If the recipe is started at 1:00pm, will it be finished by
2:00pm? How many different ways can you cut a 30x30 pan of
granola bars in equal pieces? What is the smallest pan size that can be used for these
ingredients? Will the total volume of ingredients in this recipe fit in a
30x30x4cm pan?
20
Numeracy Connections Activity: Grocery Store
Flyers
Comparing cost of different food itemsInterpreting information
sales, price by weight, price per eachCompare cost of ‘Lunchable’ vs. buying
healthier parts separatelyCosting a balanced meal
21
Numeracy Connections Activity: Compare Nutrition
Labels
Look at the amounts of food% of DVs
5% DV or less is a little 15% DV or more is a lot
Choose which is better and explain why you think it is a better choice?
