Teaching Math Online
With Your Host: Dr. Julia Parra
Featuring Awesome Online Math Teachers:
Tyson Rush, Sandy Johnson, Stacey Alley, & Naomi Schmidt
Online Math Showcase
• Let’s try and peek in on a Moodle math course
Tyson Rush is a high school Math teacher and currently working on designing
courses for Blackboard. Previously, has designed blended class for Geometry,
Algebra and Adv. Algebra.

• Let’s go take a peek at another online math course, this time in Blackboard
High School Geometry
Stacy Alley is employed with the Las Cruces Public Schools. She has been a Math teacher at Las Cruces High School for 11 years and an online instructor and course developer with IDEAL-NM for 2 years. Online Math Course Showcase
• It’s our lucky day, we have one more online math course, this time, a university course in WebCT/Blackboard
Naomi Schmidt teaches undergraduate statistics at NMSU. She has taught in a traditional setting for 9 years and online for 5 years.
As part of her own learning process for online teaching, she earned a graduate Certificate of Online Teaching from NMSU in 2007.
She is especially interested in simple techniques for collaborative learning in math courses such as synchronous chat.
When she’s not teaching or grading (!), she’s usually working in the yard or walking the dog.
Features that work for me
• Three-tier approach to material• Use of synchronous communication
tool, chat• Use of pdf file format for instructor
feedback
Structure of my course in Blackboard
1) Learners review the course material and complete the first tier of problems, Sample Problems. Detailed solutions are provided.
2) Learners complete the second tier of problems, Pair Practice Problems, and discuss approaches and solutions in chat sessions. Chat transcript is submitted as an assignment.
3) Learners complete the third tier of problems, the Homework Problems, and submit as an assignment.
My experience with chat in my online statistics course
• What is Chat?
– Text typing, synchronous discussion, recorded transcript
• Chat is an integral part of my course
– Chat fosters improved learning outcomes
– Chat increases learner engagement with the course and each other
– Chat enables learners to teach each other
– Chat is hard for me to grade
– Learners themselves valued chat sessions!
What did learners think? ~13 out of 16 felt the chats were “helpful or very helpful in learning
the material”

“Chats were a way to compare answers with someone and let me know if I was on right or wrong track”
“Chats allowed me to ask other students for help and get their input on how to solve a question from their perspective.”
