One courtier objected Birbal’s statement and said, “You are wrong. Even if a man is
offered a large amount of money, he will not be ready to stand in cold water for the
whole night.”
Birbal disagreed to the statement and said, “He may become ready to risk his life.”
According to one of the courtiers it was easy to say but difficult to find such person.
The emperor liked the statement. He announced, “If a man stands with his body in cold
water for the whole night, I shall offer him prize, he demands.”
Birbal assured the emperor to present such person. The emperor humorously said that
such person could exist only in Birbal’s mind.
Birbal moved around searching for such person for the whole day. At last he presented
a poor but young man before the emperor.
The young man stepped down, into the ice-cold water. The guards were posted to watch
over him.
Next morning the emperor went there along with his courtiers and found the man
shivering.
Seeing the emperor the young man came out of water and fell at his feet. The king was
surprised to see him and asked, “Didn’t you feel cold?” The man answered that he felt
cold but passed the night by looking at the lamp burning in the palace.”
One courtier remarked that he could remain alive due to the heat of the burning lamp.
The emperor agreed and refused to give him the prize. The disappointed young man
came to Birbal and asked for justice. Birbal calmly listen to him and assured him the
prize.
Next morning Birbal was not present in the court. The emperor sent a man to Birbal’s
house. Birbal was cooking ‘Khichdi’. The man reported that Birbal would come after
dinner.
The emperor waited for a long time but Birbal didn’t turn up. Once again the emperor
senta man but he returned with the same message.
Being impatient the emperor himself went to Birbal’s house along with some courtiers.
Seeing the emperor Birbal came hurriedly out of his house. The emperor angrily asked,
“Is it not your ‘Khichdi’ yet ready even after the lapse of two hours?’
Birbal politely took the emperor to the backside of the house and showed what he had
been doing.
The emperor and courtiers were surprised to see the earthen pot tied to the upper ends
of three poles with burning wood below it.

One day, the animals and birds of the forest saw a ray of light in the sky. They saw
someone coming down. It was a beautiful fairy with a golden crown on her head. She
had a paint-box and paint-brushes with her. The animals and birds gathered around her.
The fairy said, “The sky is blue; the grass is green; the sun is yellow and the night is
dark! Won’t you like to have beautiful colours for yourselves? I can paint you, if you
wish.”
The clever crow was the first one to speak, “Caw, Caw,” he said. “I want to be black.
Dear fairy, do colour me black.” So the fairy painted the crow as dark a night. Mr.
Crow was pleased and said, “Caw, Caw! How wonderful I look! Thank you fairy”!
Next come the parrot. He said, “Kind fairy, please paint me the colour of leaves. I want
to be green.” So the fairy painted the parrot green. All the animals and birds were
happy to see the green parrot. The parrot was happy too. He said. ”Now I can hide
among leaves when hunters come.”
The next come the elephant. He wanted to be painted grey. The fairy had to stretch her
hand to paint the big elephant. She finished her job. She was tired and thirsty. Some
butterflies brought nectar for her.
The fairy drank the sweet nectar and was happy. In return she painted the butterflies in
beautiful colours like orange, green, blue and yellow.
Next come the camel. He said, “Dear fairy, I live in the desert. I do not wish to be
painted in any bright colours. Paint me the colour of sand. “So the fairy painted him the
colour of sand. The camel was very happy when the fairy finished painting him.
Then in turn all the animals, the lion, the tiger, the giraffe, the zebra, and the rabbit
came. The fairy painted them all. The dove, the sparrow, the nightingale and the
peacock also looked colourful after the fairy had painted them. The birds and the
animals started dancing with joy.
The fairy finished her work. She was about to leave, when all heard a sound, “Cock-a-
doodle-doo.” It was the cock.
“You look so bare! How it is that I have forgotten to paint you?’ said the fairy.

were also many cooks busy preparing food, vegetables and fruits were brought from
farms.
The monkeys were exited about the feast. Hanuman, their leader, asked the monkeys to
sit in row in the big dining hall. He asked them to behave properly.
The dining hall was beautifully decorated with flowers and different kinds of coloured
lamps. Servants brought one dish after another in silver and gold plates. There were
different kinds of vegetables-potatoes, bringles, cauliflower and green peas. Sweets
were in plenty-laddoos, jalebees and gulabjamuns.
Seeta was very fond of monkeys. To show her love for them, she decided to serve them
herself. She came to the dining hall. The servants brought a big pot full of green peas.
Seeta began to serve the monkeys.
There was a little naughty monkey. When Seeta came near him, a little green pea
slipped from the spoon and fall on the ground. The green peas started jumping. The
little monkey was annoyed:” This little pea is teasing me. Let me show it that I can also
jump.” So the little monkey started jumping and shouted, “Hoop…Ho… Hoop…Ho…”
The next monkey said, “How does this little fellow tease me?” The little monkey’s
neighbour jumped higher. The next monkey started jumping and shouting. There was a
lot of noise.
Seeta left the dining hall in anger and sent for Hanuman.
Hanuman entered the hall with a big stick. He ordered the monkeys to be quiet.
Hanuman asked the monkey at the end of the row, “Why did you jump?” The monkey
says, “I was not the first to jump. I jumped because my neighbour jumped.” Everybody
replied in the same manner.
At last, Hanuman asked the little monkey, who had jumped first. “Little fellow, tell me,
why did you jump?”
The little monkey said, “I saw the little green pea jump. I jumped to show the pea that I
can jump higher. The pea was teasing me.”
Hanuman was angry, but could not help laughing at the little fellow and said, My dear
little one, do not disturb again. OK?’
xviii
Hanuman narrated this to Seeta. Seeta laughed and said, “Monkeys are after all
monkeys.”
STORY- 5 ‘ LORD GANESH ‘ - FESTIVAL.
Little Ganesha was guarding the door. His mother
Godddess Parvati was taking a bath. She had told him,
“Do not allow anyone to enter. Wait till I finish my
bath.”
Lord Shiva arrived from the Himalayas. He had come
after a long time. He was eager to meet his wife Parvati. He
had never seen his son Ganesha.
He asked chubby little Ganesha to move away from the
entrance. Ganesha refused to do so. How could he allow a
stranger to enter the house? How could he disobey his
mother? Lord Shiva in anger cut of little Ganesha’s head.
Then Lord Shiva entered the house. When Parvati came out,
after finishing her bath, she was overjoyed to see her
husband. She touched the feet of her Lord and said. ”Did you meet our son? I had asked
him to guard the entrance.”
Lord Shiva became very sad. He now realized that he had killed his own son.
Parvati rushed out to look for her son. She was shocked to see the head separated from
the body.
When she came to know that Lord Shiva had killed his own son, she said to him, “I
want my son back alive.
Lord Shiva went in search of a head. The first living thing he saw was an elephant. He
killed the elephant and brought his head.
Lord Shiva then put the elephant’s head on the body of Ganesha. He chanted some
sacred hymns. Ganesha became alive.
Lord Shiva then embraced his little son. Goddess Parvati was not satisfied.
She looked at Ganesha and sighed, she said, “I am sure, people will laugh at my son.
They will tease him because of his elephant’s head.”
God Shiva explained, “Do not worry. People will not laugh at our son. They will
worship him.” Parvati sobbed.
xix
Lord Shiva said, “Our son Ganesha will bring good luck to the people. He will be
worshipped by all.”
Lord Shiva further said. “Remember this, every happy occasion will begin with the
worship of our dear son Ganesha.”
How happy we all are to welcome Ganesha on the “Ganesha Chaturthi Day!” and
celebrate his birthday.
STORY – 6 “COO ….. OO…….. COO…… OO……!” - KOYAL.
Long, long ago, a wood-cutter lived in a jungle. He felled trees and sold the wood in a
nearby village.
The wood-cutter’s wife was dead. He had to look after his two children. He had a son
named”Tu” and a daughter named “Coo.”
Everyday the woodcutter took his children to the woods, where they played with rabbits
and other small animals. Sometimes they gathered wild flowers, while the wood-cutter
was busy cutting wood.
In the evening they returned to their little hut.
One day, while felling a big tree, the wood-cutter was caught beneath it. He was
crushed to death. The poor children wept bitterly. They had lost their only parent. Now
they became orphans.
In the evening, holding each other’s hands, they reached the hut. Tu and Coo felt lonely
without their father. They were frightened. The next day, they left their hut. They
started walking.
xx
They walked on and on. At last they came to a hill. There were many mango trees at the
foot of the hill. Tu and Coo were very tired and thirsty. Coo sat near a mango tree. Tu
went to fetch water for them.
After some time Tu returned. Coo was not there. He began to call out,
“Coo……oo….Coo…oo! “Where are you?” But no one answered. Tu was very sad.
Tu had lost his sister. He searched for her everywhere. He did not find his sister “Coo”
anywhere.
Soon it became dark. He could hear the wild animals far away. He was terribly
frightened. He started weeping bitterly.
Suddenly a light shone. He saw a fairy standing before him, “Do not sob, I will help
you.” She reached Tu with her magic wand. He was changed into a bird.
From that day, he is heard calling on “Coo-o-Coo-o” among the mango trees. It is the
brother Tu in search of his sister Coo calling “Coo-o-Coo-o.”
We hear him and say it is Koyal.
STORY-7 “A SHOOTING TEST MAHABHARATA”
Dronacharya: The teacher of Pandavs and the Kauravs.
Yudhishthir, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev are the
Pandav princes.
(In the orchard Dron, the teacher of Pandavs and Kauravs
princes, talking to the young Pandav Prince. The young
Pandavs have their bows and arrows with them.)
Dron: I have taught you to use different arms, to shoot with ‘the bow’, to ride horses
and to drive them and to work hard and to fight well.
Bhim: Sir, you’ve taught me to use club too. I can fight with any man now.
Dron: I am sure you can. Each one of you can fight with any man now.
Nakul: Sir, won’t you teach us anymore?
Dron (smiling): I will. Don’t be sad, my boy. Today I want to give you a test.
Sahadev: Is it a difficult test, Sir?
Dron:No, it is not difficult. It’s easy.
Nakul: Then all of us will pass.
Dron: I don’t know that, but I’ll test all of you.
Bhim: What’s the test, Sir?
xxi
Dron(pointing to a tree): There is a bird in that tree. You have to shoot it in the right
eye. Can you do it?
All: Yes, Sir, we can.
Dron : Very well. Yudhishthir, get ready. What are you going to do?
Yudhishthir: Sir, I am going to shoot the bird.
Dron : What do you see?
Yudhishthir: Sis, I see you. I see my brothers. I see those trees, and I see the bird in
that tree.
Dron : Thank you. You can’t shoot the bird. Don’t try. Bhim, is your turn now. Put the
arrow on your bow.
Bhim : I am ready, Sir.
Dron : What do you see?
Bhim : I see a tree, the blue sky behind it, and a bird on one of the branches of the tree.
Dron : Thank you. Don’t shoot. Nakul, get ready.
Nakul : I am ready, Sir. Shall I shoot?
Dron : No, not yet. First answer my question. What do you see in from of you?
Nakul : Sir, I see my bow with my arrow on it, a tree……..
Dron : Thank you. You won’t be able to shoot the bird. Sahadev, put an arrow on your
bow and get ready to shoot the bird.
Sahadev : I’m ready, Sir.
Dron : Can you see the bird?
Sahadev : Yes, Sir, I can see it.
Dron : What other things can you see?
Sahadev : I can see the tree and its branches and leaves…
Dron : Thank you. Don’t shoot. Arjun, where are you?
Arjun : I’m here, Sir.
Dron : Are you ready?
Arjun : I’m ready, Sir.
Dron : What do you see in front of you?
Arjun : I see only the bird’s right eye.
Dron : Can you not see anything else?
Arjun : No, Sir, I can’t. I can’t see the bird’s body.
Dron : Very good. Arjun. Shoot.
( Arjun shoots the bird’s right eye. Dron and Arjun’s brothers clap.)
xxii
Dron (to Arjun’s brothers): Learn to see the mark. If we have our eyes fixed on the
mark, we will be successful.

RHYMES – 15 ‘WE ARE THE MUSIC – LOVERS’
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams
Wandering by alone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate/sad/neglected streams,
World-losers and World-forsakes,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world forever, it seems.
RHYME-16 ‘THE WEEKEND’
Well, the weekend comes every week,
We love it, We love it; Oh, we really love it!
Saturday, Sunday, Oh, What a treat!
We love it, We love it, Oh, we love it!
Now the weekend makes you feel so fine,
We love it, We love it, Oh, we really love it!
Saturday, Sunday, when you’re all mine, all mine….Oh.
Chorus: Playing on the weekend, Playing with the friends,
Playing on the weekend, Hope it never ends.
Playing on the weekend, Morning, noon or night.
Monday, it is gone. Tuesday, it is gone.
Wednesday, it is gone. Thursday, it is gone. Friday, it is gone.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, they are all gone.
Now the weekend makes you feel all right.
We love it, We love it, Oh, we love it!
Saturday, Sunday, even Friday night,
We love it, We love it, Oh, we love it!
Now, the weekend makes you feel so fine,
We love it, We love it, Oh, we love it!
Saturday, Sunday, when you are mine…..Oh….!.....!
