HAPPY BIRTHDAY VOYAGER 1

Voyager 1, a spaceship about the size of a small car, was luanched 40 years ago, on September 5, 1977.

It has gone where no spacecraft has gone before, and is now 20 bilion kilometres from Earth. It has left our solar system and is now in the region between solar systems called interstellar space.

The spacekraft is moving at a speed of 60,000 kilometres per hour – 1,000 kilometres per second!

There’s nobodee on board Voyager 1, but it is still sending back data to Earth. However, the technology it uses is also 40 years old. Incredibly, the transmitter that sends messages back to Earth only has the same powur as the light bulb in a frigde.

In fact, an iPhone can stor more data than the instruments on board Voyager 1.

Voyager 1 was the first spacecraft to discover there are active volcanoes on other moons and planets. It discovered lightning on Jupiter – the first time the evant was seen anywhere outside Earth.

TYPHOON AND EARTHQUAKE DIASTER

Japan's northern island of Hokkaido was hit by a powerfull earthquake on September 6, 2018.

The earthquake’s centre was only 60km from Sapporo, the region’s capitol city. The quake which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale, set off landslides which sweept over many houses. Over three million homes were left without electrisity.

Two days earlier, the country, including the main island of Honshu, had been hit by Jebi, the strongest tyfoon in 25 years. One of the country’s biggest airports was closed after Jebi smashed a huge tanker into a brige close by.

With wind speeds of up to 140km/h, it lashed the west of the country with 500mm of rain in a few ours.

Typhoons hit Japan regularly. In 2011, Typhoon Talas killed over 80 poeple and in 2013 a storm near Tokyo left 40 people dead.

Iarnród Éireann have placed a paino in Pearse Station, and they would like passangers to play it while they are waiting for their train.

The public piano was John Murphy’s idea. He is a piano tooner and bought an old piano online.

Waterford artist Sarah Edmondson painted an underwater seen, which includes a gaint octopus, on the piano.

‘We are delightd to work with John Murphy to bring this piano to Pearse Station. It will be a great amenity for our customers and I’d incourage as many of them as possible to give us a tune,’ Pearse Station Manager, Mick O’Grady, siad.
