Course Details & Code of Conduct

Eligibility

Any aspirant or yoga teacher with a strong determination to pursue the course is eligible.

Certification

Traditional Yoga is registered with the Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga School (RYS). Uponcompletion you will receive a 200 hour Traditional Yoga Teacher Training Certificate (Beginners). Ifyou wish, you will be eligible to register your training with the Yoga Alliance. Course Objectives

To restore an understanding of the progressive relationship of the different limbs of yoga forthe purification of the body and mind.

To gain a broad knowledge of the diverse systems that comprise and inform the yogatradition.

To understand the principles that underlie the correct sequencing of Asanas in order toimplement this in the designing of yoga classes.

To introduce important Kriya, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandana techniques not commonlypracticed in the West.

To give an overview of alternative health therapies and dietary treatments, includingAyurveda, so that yoga teachers are better equipped to guide their students towards goodhealth.

To learn therapeutic yoga techniques that can be used to treat others, particularlyKayachikitsa and Kayasamvadhana.

To understand the function and purpose of different types of meditation, from subjectivethrough to objective techniques, in order to make informed choices for one’s own practice orwhen teaching meditation.

To explore through both theory and practice raja yoga as taught by Patanajali.

To progress on the path of yoga

To learn to spread the teachings of yoga and practice teaching yoga through teacher roleplaying activities

To become a true yogi

Daily schedule

5.00-7.00 am (usually) on all days or as convenient to the group,

5.00-9.00 am on few Sundays and Public Holidays with a break in between for breakfast(the stude n t s may have to volunteer to bring fruits to share among all fellow students)

Sunday or Monday, being the weekly day off

The Schedule is totally at the discretion of the teacher.

Course Contents Overview

• The course will include both theory and practice and equal importance will be given to yoga ofthe body and yoga of the mind.

• The course is designed on the basis that participants will already have reached a basic level ofproficiency in asanas and teaches a methodology that provides a framework of understandingfor asana practice. About 100 asanas will be practiced with beginner level to advanced level.

• The yoga sessions will focus mainly on asana, pranayama, mudra and bandhana practice.Kumar will demonstrate the importance of correct sequencing using the system of vargas andthe energy flow principle based on the five elements. Theory will cover a range of subjectsthroughout the course.

• The external yoga aspect of the course is based on the ancient texts such as Hatha YogaPradeepika, Hatha Ratnavali, Siva Samhitha, Gheranda Samhitha, Kurnataka Yoga andKapala Kurnataka Yoga and informed by Kumar’s experience of studying in 37 yoga schoolsthroughout India.The internal yoga aspect of the course is based on the teachings of Buddha,Patanjali, and Shankaracharya. Kumar will also refer to the Yoga Vasishta Saara andBhagavadgita, the Brahmasutras and the Vedas.

• The course includes a two day intensive residential meditation course in addition to regularmeditation practice.

• An understanding of Kaya chikitsa and kaya samvadhana therapeutic yoga and massage (BioNeuron Feedback Mechanism) will be given to the students.

External Yoga

Shat Kriyas ( Six cleansing techniques),

Chair Yoga / Charnadasa / Jeeva Mukthi Yoga / Iyengar / Ashtanga Vinyasa / Vini Yoga.

• Suryanamaskaras from various traditions and related mantras

• Asanas, the importance of correct sequencing using the system of vargas and the energyflow principle based on the five elements.

• Angabandanas and angachalanas

• Asanas as treatment for disease ( disease index from Hatha Ratnavali)

• Mudra and Bandhana

• Pranayamas, including lesser known and advanced techniques, both external and internalrespiratory techniques. (More than 100 Pranayamas)

(Note: addition or deletion of any topic is at the sole discretion of Dr. Kumar and the faculty) Please note: Dr. Kumar and the faculty reserve the right to award the certificate and grade basedon the eligibility of the student at the end of the course. The student’s level of attendance andmaintenance of the code of discipline and performance in the end-examination will be consideredbefore certification. In order to receive a certificate 85% attendance is required. If non-attendanceis due to illness or for any other genuine reason, certification would be at Dr. Kumar’s discretion.

OUR CODE OF CONDUCT

We expect our students to maintain high standards of personal conduct. This includes personalhonesty, discipline, integrity, ethics and values. Our code of conduct is a declaration of acceptableethical and professional behavior by which all registrants agree to conduct the teaching of yoga. Itis not intended to supersede the ethics of any school or tradition but is intended to be a basis foryoga principles.

Observance of YamaFor the duration of the course all students resolve to practice Yama, the code of conduct outlinedby Patanjali. Yama involves maintaining Ahimsa (non violence/abstaining fromharming/abusing/using harsh words); Satya (speaking truth/abstaining from lies/frivolous talk);Asteya (abstaining from stealing); Brahmacharya (abstaining from sexual activities other thanspouse); Aparigraha (abstaining from intoxicants including tobacco and alcohol)

PunctualityAs a mark of respect for the teacher and as a practice of self discipline, students are required to beon time and to remain for the duration of each class. In the event that you need to be absent fromany class or to leave the class early, permission should be obtained from the Teacher/CourseCoordinator in advance. Latecomers (Coming lat after the commencement of the class) without

prior permission will be marked absent for that class. And all latecomers should enter the class quietly, without disturbing the othe r students or altering the provided mat spaces. Classes missed during the course cannot be mad e up.

Noble SilenceStudents are expected to maintain noble silence during the teaching hours and on the premiseswhere the course is taking place. This means students should avoid communication with fellowstudents and instead maintain mindfulness throughout the class. Communication is only permitted

with the teacher and volunteers unless the class is interactive. The aim of this is to allow focusand awareness to stay within in order to deepen the meditative aspect of the practice. When themind is calm and quiet it increases the ability to absorb information and learn.

Mobile PhonesAll mobile phones to be switched off or to be kept in silent mode before entering the class.

FootwearPlease leave your shoes footwear neatly outside in a row in the place earmarked for them.

Prohibited itemsPhotography, Video, Audio recording during classes is only permitted with the prior permission of theteacher.

ClothingWear loose comfortable clothing for asana practice. To maintain the sanctity of the class, modestdress is required, with shoulders, midriff and legs covered. Transparent and revealing clothing isnot permitted.

ValuablesThe centre will not accept responsibility for any loss or damage of your belongings in the centre.Please keep your valuables with you at all times.

Medical conditionIf you have a medical condition, please consult your Course Coordinator to take the advise of theteacher about the problem.

Class rules & requests• Seek the guidance of the volunteers to place your asana mats in the class.• Always place the mats without making any sound or causing any disturbance to your fellow

student.• Do not alter the position of the asana mats in a class to suit your convenience.• Students must not assist each other during class without prior permission of the teacher.• When the class has ended, please fold the mat and carry it back.• Any feedback, comments or suggestions for the teachers should be reserved until the end of

the class.
