Thank you for planning your History on the Go play with the OrangeCounty Regional History Center! This packet includes activities that can be

done before or after our visit and aligns with state standards.

The activities you'll find in here were created with you in mind! We knowthat your day is jam packed and it's sometimes hard to squeeze in time tomeet social studies standards. That's why we incorporated activities thatare interdisciplinary with other subjects such as language arts. We have

also ensured many of the activities include the use of technology to keep insync with the digital classroom initiative.

Henry Flagler

$100 – True or False: Henry Flagler owned many different types of businesses in various

industries. / True. He was a part owner of a grain company, salt mining company, oil, rail

lines, and hotels.

$200 – Why did Henry Flagler build railroads in Florida? / He wanted to have railroad

lines that could bring people to and from his hotels.

$300 – What city in south Florida was created by Flagler? / Miami. He build a railroad to

it, paved streets, created its first water and power systems and even financed the first

newspaper there.

$400 – How far south did Henry Flagler’s railroad go? (city) / Key West

Henry Plant

$100 – What city is named after Henry Plant? / Plant City near Tampa. It’s known for its

annual strawberry festival.

$200 – Why did Henry Plant and his wife move down to Florida? / To improve his wife’s

health. It was believed that the Florida weather could improve illness.

$300 – How did Henry Plant get into the railroad business? / After the Civil War, the

railroads in the south had been severely damaged. He bought up two railroad

companies and began to expand them.

$400 – True or False: Henry Plant also built hotels. / True.

Henry Ford

$100 – True or False: Henry Ford worked for the Edison Illuminating Company. / True.

Thomas Edison became a good friend to Ford.

$200 – True or False: Henry Ford invented the car. / False. He found a more efficient way

to build them - the Assembly Line. His method changed the way cars were made.

$300 – How did Henry Ford’s car impact Americans? / He made cars cheaper so the

average American could afford to buy a car. It also allowed Americans to travel more.

$400 – Why did Henry Ford buy a house in Florida? / He had visited Thomas Edison on

vacation during the winter months and liked it so much, he bought a house.

Henry Sanford

$100 – Henry Sanford came down to Florida following what war? / The Civil War. Many

northern businessmen came to the south following the war for opportunity.

$200 – What agricultural crop is Henry Sanford known for? / Citrus; oranges

$300 – True or False: There’s a town named after Henry Sanford. / True. The town of

Sanford is near the St. John’s River, north of Orlando.

$400 – True or False: Henry Sanford was successful in getting Orange County to build

their courthouse in the town of Sanford. / False. Jacob Summerlin, a cattle businessman,

convinced Orange County to keep it in Orlando.
