Reflective Practice

Reflective practice is a tool that you can use to help you see what is going on in your classroom, or how a lesson was actually received. You can record yourself teaching for the sole purpose of reflecting on what you see, or sharing the video with a colleague to gain feedback. When thinking about standards and objectives here are some great questions to ask yourself whether you are reflecting on a lesson or giving feedback about a lesson you watched:

• How can a teacher make sure that the lesson objective is clear to students?

• What are some ways to access prior knowledge? Why is this important to do?

• How were the elements of the lesson organized to help students master the objective?

Peer observation is an excellent tool for teacher growth and collaboration. A teacher can visit a peers class for the entire period, or just for a selected amount of time. For standards and objectives, the teacher could observe a colleague’s class to see if the 4 Ms are being met in each objective. This is a friendly informal observation in which the observed and the observer can both grow in the discussion. The following page has a template that is great when used for teachers observing other teachers. It focuses on best practice, what is seen, and a glow and grow.

Peer Observation

Typically evaluative by nature, teacher observation is usually linked to classroom performance. More and more schools, however, are using observation -- teachers observing teachers -- as a form of professional development that improves teaching practices and student performance

A common practice for teachers is to plan lessons and then find the objective to match what is already planned. It is important to think of your standard as your final destination and the lesson as the trip that will get you there. Unwrap the state standard to make the lesson manageable and achievable to students during a lesson. Effective teachers spend more time unwrapping the standards than planning great lessons.
