Dear IADMFR colleagues,

It has been my great pleasure and honour to serve as President-elect and Newsletter Editor of the International Association of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology (IADMFR) since August, 2015. During the 20th International Congress of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology (ICDMFR) held in Santiago, Chile, Philadelphia, USA was chosen to be the host City of the 22nd International Congress of IADMFR.

Over the past 50-year history of IADMFR there have been only a few International congresses convened in the United States. The last IADMFR congress held on North American soil was 20 years ago. We have determined that the 22nd ICDMFR in Philadelphia must be a strong showcase of North America to our DentoMaxillofacial Radiology colleagues worldwide. We plan to present a world-class high-level scientific meeting in 2019. To promote IADMFR in North America, we have decided

to combine the 2019 American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) annual session with the 22nd ICDMFR. Also, we have reached out to the Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (CAOMR), the American Association of Dental Maxillofacial Radiographic Technicians (AADMRT), and will make sure that the 22nd ICDMFR has a record number attendees.

As the Newsletter editor, I have organized and edited four issues of the IADMFR newsletters. For the first three issues (Volume 44/2, Volume 45/1, and Volume 45/2), we have published a total of 104 pages, which covered IADMFR board and DentoMaxillofacial Radiology journal information, regional meeting news, and member activities from all over the world. The newsletters have been posted on the IADMFR website (www.iadmfr.org) and distributed through the British Institute of Radiology, the publisher of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology (DMFR), the IADMFR official Journal. In Volume 44/2, we highlighted the success of the 20th international congress of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology in Santiago, Chile. Nearly 800 people attended the congress with 13 keynote speakers and approximately 300 oral and poster presentations in the meeting. In Volume 45/1, we published reports of President Lin, Prof. Parker, Secretary General, Prof. Schulze, the editor of DMFR, and regional directors from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and North America. Previous General Assembly meeting minutes was also published in this issue. In Volume 45/2, we reported on the preparations for the 21st ICDMFR in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. President Lin enlisted major congress scenes and keynote speakers in the 21st ICDMFR. In this issue we also announced the sad news that Prof. Gregorio Faivovich (1923-2016), the

editorial

founding father of the International Association of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology passed away. On behalf of all members of IADMFR, Prof. Parker paid a special tribute to Prof. Faivovich in the issue.

Over the past two years, I have received tremendous support from the IADMFR board, especially Secretary General Prof. Mohamed E. Parker, Secretary General-elect Prof. Reinhilde Jacobs, President Limin Lin, and Immediate Past President Andres Briner. I am also very grateful for the support of Christopher Clough, Sarah Jordan, and Nicole Spray, staff from the British Institute of Radiology. They are very professional and have published all issues of newsletter on time.

Finally, I would like to share the news that the 22nd ICDMFR will be held on August 22-25, 2019 (Thursday-Sunday) in Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (Picture 1-3). The hotel is located in the nation’s first skyscraper and the City Center. Philadelphia has a beauty unlike any other city. We expect that the 22nd ICDMFR in Philadelphia will attract record numbers of attendees of DentoMaxillofacial Radiologists from all over the world.

Thank you!

Greetings,

Sincere greetings from the local organizing committee of the 21st International Congress of Oral and DentoMaxillofacial Radiology in Kaohsiung City, Chinese Taipei.

After many years of planning and discussion, we have finally reached the finish line. The theme of the congress was or-ganized into three topics: TMJ disorders, oral oncology, and clinical diagnosis. We invited 42 renowned speakers from all over the world. To date, we have received 236 papers (includ-ing 1 keynote speech, 41 special speeches, 91 oral presenters, and 103 posters). We were expecting 300 attendees from over 30 countries, including sponsors from 3 government organiza-tions, 3 dental associations, 3 dental specialty associations, and 5 commercial companies.

Besides academic activities, we prepared social events such as golf contest, pre-congress tours, welcome party and open ceremony with authentic cultural singing, Kaohsiung night, Kaohsiung harbor touring, and Gala dinner with classical piano, orchestral performance, and aboriginal singing.

The Congress meetings were held at the Ambassador hotel which is the most famous hotel and restaurant in southern Chinese Taipei. The hotel is located near Kaohsiung’s Love River which has beautiful scenery.

Kaohsiung is a diverse city with local cultural venues, shopping malls, depart-ment stores, parks, hills, mountains, rivers, ocean, and harbors. With its history, culture, and natural resources, Kaohsiung has remade the city to be worthy of the name, “Capital of Marine Tourism.”

We hope you have had a positive experience in Kaohsiung.

report from the president

Dear Members,

Greetings from the secretariate in Cape Town. I hope all our colleagues enjoyed the 21st ICDMFR in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. Dr Li Min Lin and the local organising committee put together an exciting scientific and social programme.

I had the privilege of representing the IADMFR at an International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) consultancy meeting in Vienna from 20 to 24 February 2017. Seven international experts contributed to the meeting, including representatives of the World Dental Federation (FDI), the International Association of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology (IADMFR), the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), and the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging (the Image Gently Alliance). The WHO representative participated through teleconferencing.

The purpose of the meeting was to finalize the training material developed by the IAEA for radiation protection in dental radiology, and to prepare an advanced draft of a new publication in the safety report series. The experts reviewed the new training package consisting of 12 modules and found it ready for further dissemination through the IAEA RPOP website, after the formal endorsement of the above mentioned organizations.

For those who travelled to Kaohsiung we hope you had a safe journey.

Kind Regards

report from the Journal editor

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

Since 2016 we have not encountered many changes regarding our journal, DentoMaxillofacial Radiology. Everything continues to operate smoothly and satisfactorily. It is noteworthy, that after an almost equal number of submitted manuscripts in the years 2014 and 2015, in 2016 DMFR received an all-time high of 505 submitted manuscripts. This is a very positive indicator for DMFR since it proves the appeal of the journal to authors. Yet it also indicates the increased work for the editors and reviewers. Since 2008 the number of submissions has doubled! This increase combined with the challenge to efficiently manage this amount of submissions requires enhancements in efficiency. A streamlined operation of DMFR editors supported by a well-functioning web-based electronic management system is the basis of all our efforts.

Needless to say, this workload also poses challenges on our reviewers. Over the last year we have made an attempt to

increase the number of reviewers to avoid overloading single individuals. The electronic system helps us to monitor the work of every single reviewer and also to have access to his/her reviewing records. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our reviewers without whom a scientific journal would not be feasible at all. An official acknowledgement to all our reviewers in 2016 has been published in issue 2 this year. Having said this, I nevertheless want to emphasize that delay in manuscript processing in the majority of cases is caused by delayed reviews or non-responsive reviewers. The main reason certainly lies in the voluntary status of reviewers in general and in the huge workload many of our reviewers have aside from their reviewing activities. Nevertheless, the entire scientific community relies on the peer-review system, including DMFR. Thus I would still like to appeal to everybody to help DMFR to retain its reputation as an efficient and responsive journal. Despite the high number of manuscripts, mainly due to electronic processing and other management decisions DMFR was able to reduce the average turnaround time for each manuscript by 50% within the same period since 2008. It is now on average 18 days versus 39 day in 2008.

That’s about all the news for the journal. Again I have to emphasize that the journal would not be possible without the extremely valuable work of our Associate Editors, who cope with the increased workload and operate voluntarily with utmost efficacy. Thank you guys, it’s a great pleasure working with you!

With best regards

Ralf Schulze

Editor-in-Chief DMFR

Report from Europe

Dear colleagues,

One of the most important activities designed for young members of the European Academy of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology (EADMFR), is the EADMFR Junior Meeting. The 4th Junior Meeting was held in Porto (Portugal) in February 2017. The meeting was extremely successful, combining lectures, team work on Evidence Based Radiology tasks as well as workshops on interpretation of panoramic and CBCT findings, oral and pharyngeal function and hands on training in the field of maxillofacial ultrasound. Apart from learning, another crucial objective of these meetings is to create a network of young researchers who keep in touch and continue scientific cooperation (photos 1 to 4). Look for coming announcements for the next junior meeting.

It is vital for DMFR specialists to establish closer contacts with head and neck radiologists, since both disciplines overlap in the maxillofacial area and tighter collaboration between the disciplines is encouraged. However, the two groups of specialists have different backgrounds and competence range, as well as various experiences of CT, MRI and CBCT. The congresses of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ESHNR) provide an excellent opportunity for scientists and practitioners to meet, exchange experiences and gain cutting edge knowledge. European members of the IADMFR had a chance to participate in the ESNHR congress in Leiden (the Netherlands) in 2016. In future, more cooperation between specialists in Dentomaxillofacial radiology and Head & Neck radiologists might refine the content of the lectures regarding pathology in the maxilla and mandible.

The European Congress of Radiology is the annual meeting of the European Society of Radiology and it attracted 12900 onsite participants and 6000 registered online viewers, in total 21000 participants this year. It is a trend-setting, dynamic and service-oriented congress, known as one of the most innovative meetings within the scientific community, with a unique and inspiring setting. The congress was held in Vienna at the International Vienna Congress Centre 1-5 March, 2017 with the theme of “The flower garden of Radiology” (Photo 5). The intense scientific program was combined with a wide variety of social events. There were a number of IADMFR members who attended the meeting (Photo 6). The scientific sessions and the refresher courses on Head and Neck radiology provided an efficient platform that helps broaden participants’ perspectives on various aspects in our field. The main topics were inflammation/infection, functional/hybrid imaging, salivary glands, and evaluation after surgery.

Paranasal sinus, temporal bone, skull base and masticatory space were other topics of interest for oral and maxillofacial radiologists. The interactive sessions gave the participants the opportunity to shortly discuss the cases besides contributing to the process with the electronic voting system. There were several educational posters designed to teach or review radiologic signs, pathologic correlations, procedures or other aspects related to the practice of imaging. The next Congress and Refresher Course of ESR is going to be held in Vienna, Austria, from February 28 to March 4 2018.

The 16th European Congress of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology will be held from the 14 to 16 of June 2018 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Preparations for the congress are ongoing and the dedicated local team lead by Dorothea Dagassan is working hard to prepare a successful meeting.

Best wishes from the European directors,

Ingrid Rózyło-Kalinowska and Eva Levring Jäghagen

16TH EUROPEAN CONGRESS OF DENTOMAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY (ECDMFR) 14-16 JUNE 2018, IN LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

On behalf of the local organizing committee and the Swiss Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology we are inviting members of the The European Academy of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology to join us all in June 2018 for the next ECDMFR meeting to be held in Lucerne, Switzerland. The congress will discuss scientific breakthroughs, current challenges and future trends of DMFR. Lucerne offers a unique opportunity to meet specialists from The European Academy of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, researchers from universities and colleagues from private practices interested in DMFR. Furthermore, the city of Lucerne is geographically located in the heart of Switzerland and Europe. Remember, Lucerne ranks amongst the world's prettiest cities surrounded by the beautiful lake and mountains.

The conference will take place at the The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne – the one-of-a-kind‚ Verkehrshaus’ - just a few metres away from the beautiful shores of lake Lucerne. An outstanding social programme has also been arranged for accompanying guests and families. One of the meeting’s social highlights will certainly be the "Swiss Evening" to be held on Thursday that will feature traditional dishes and other surprises that make up for our famous "Swissness".

Last but not least, the scientific program promises also to be exciting. The kick-off will be a precongress on the topic of "The virtual patients" on Wednesday, where internationally renowned experts in the field will present the state-of-the-art in imaging and processing of data to provide a functional workflow for an all digital treatment concept. The main congress - held from Thursday to Saturday - will have key-note lectures on many hot topics in the field of medical and dental radiology focusing on current and future challenges of our specialty. report from the Middle east

The main news this spring is the preparation for contributions and attendance for the 21st International Congress of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, that took place from 26 - 29 April 2017, in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, (IADMFR 2017). We had two contributors from our region (Saudi Arabia)

1. Professor Zainul Ahmad Rajion from King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Dental college in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was contributing in an oral presentation entitled “Addition of zygomatic arch resection in

decompressive craniectomy”.

2. Dr. Duaa Felemban from Taibah University, Dental college in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, who is approaching the end of her PhD degree in Osaka University, Japan, was contributing in an oral presentation titled “Usefulness of Signal Intensity Correction Filter in MR Imaging of the Oral Region”. This topic was presented as a poster in the 1st annual scientific meeting of International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) Japanese chapter.

Also, in the IADMFR 2017 conference the election of the new Middle East Regional Directors was finalized at the Board Meeting in Kaohsiung. I had the honor of being the Regional Director of the Middle East for the past 4 years and I have seen how our specialty is gaining more and more recognition because of the effort of our professors in the region and the new postgraduate students coming back from abroad after high quality training. At the end of my period as Director, we have managed to establish our Saudi Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (SOMFR) Club in Saudi Arabia, and in the coming years, I am positive that we will have more advancements and recognition in our region.

Good luck to all colleagues around the world.

Report to the IADMFR Board 2017 April

The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) held its’ 67th Annual Session in Scottsdale, AZ in the fall of 2017. We enjoyed the camaraderie with our international colleagues and their interest in the meeting. It is very noteworthy that the AAOMR membership has seen an increase in international members and we would like to acknowledge this increased level of interest to the international community of oral radiology.

The following list of new officers assumed their duties during the 2016 AAOMR Annual Session: our IAMDFR incoming president, Dr. Jie Yang, is our Immediate Past President, our new President is Dr. Sanjay Mallya, and our new incoming President is Dr. Debra Gander. Dr. Robert Cederberg remains our Executive Director, Gail Williamson, Associate Executive Director and Dr. Hui Lang, Treasurer. Councilors are Dr. Rumpa Ganguly, Councilor for Academy Affairs; Vijay Parashar, Councilor for Communications; Thomas Deahl, Councilor for Educational Affairs; and, Dr. Aruna Ramesh, Councilor for Public Policy and Scientific Affairs. Dr. James Geist is our new Editor of the Oral Radiology section of Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology, the official publication of the AAOMR.

More on the 2017 AAOMR Annual Session: The annual session committee changed the format for the main podium speakers for the 2017 annual session, incorporating a ‘return to the basics’ by a program of anatomic reviews and pathologic processes of the suprahyoid neck, temporal bone, skull base, cervical spine and paranasal sinuses. The speakers also reviewed other areas of anatomy and pathology including the TMJ region, maxillomandibular alveolar region and the airway; in addition, we included programs on the use of CBCT in the specialty areas of Orthodontics, Endodontics and Implantology.

Page 11: te nterntnl sstn newsletter - BIR Publications · As the Newsletter editor, I have organized and edited four issues of the IADMFR newsletters. For the first three issues (Volume 44/2,

On the final day of our meeting, we had two offerings: one was a review of the use of CBCT during clinical practice and the other was an 8 hour Basic Level I CBCT Training Course. One of our most fascinating scientific lectures was a review of the use of Dental OCT in Japan given by Dr. Yasunori Sumi. This is a very fast-growing area of oral and maxillofacial imaging and that is receiving a great deal of research interest throughout medical imaging, not just oral radiology. Of course, the great appeal of OCT is its ability to visualize dental and oral structures without the use of ionizing radiation. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Sumi.

Update on the review of NCRP Report #165: Look forward to the release of the new NCRP Report concerning Oral Radiology sometime in the 2nd Quarter of 2017!

Dr. Yang, our new IADMFR President, continues to work to prepare for the 2019 22nd IADMFR Annual Meeting to be held in Philadelphia. We in the AAOMR look forward to greeting our international colleagues in Philadelphia in two short years!

Respectfully submitted,
