The Need for Tape Automation Sunday 27th February 2011 saw Google Gmail suffer one of its

worst outages in recent history, when thousands of Gmailaccounts were deleted due to a software bug caused by a storagesoftware update. Fortunately for Google, they were able to relyupon tape to restore the deleted data.

have multiple copies of your data, in multiple data centers...well, insome rare instances software bugs can affect several copies of thedata. That’s what happened here. Some copies of mail were deleted,

and we’ve been hard at work over the last 30 hours getting it back for

the people affected by this issue... To protect your information fromthese unusual bugs, we also back it up to tape. Since the tapes are
