Introduction

July is celebrated nationwide on the barangay, municipal, city, provincial, and local levels as Nutrition Month in the Philippines to encourage everyone to eat healthy and nutritious foods.

Good nutrition is important for everyone.

Healthful diets help children grow, develop, and do well in school. They enable people of all ages to work productively and feel their best. What people eat can also reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, stroke, and osteoporosis.

Eating right can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol which increase the risk of disease. Proper nutrition means getting both enough calories and the proper nutrients. Many people eat more calories than the body needs. This can lead to obesity which is a risk factor for many diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Today, good nutrition has become more important than ever. There is also now a variety of dietary preferences to choose from, based on cultural diversity, religion and regional differences, and personal preferences. Nutritional needs change throughout the life cycle. The number of calories and amount of specific nutrients required vary based on age, sex, reproductive status, activity level, and overall health of the person.

Of course food alone is not the only key to a longer and healthier life. Good nutrition should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise, not smoking or drinking alcohol excessively, stress management, and limiting exposure to environmental hazards. And genes also play a big part in your risk for certain health problems.

Page 3: TCU Nutrition month

As in anything one does, moderation is the key to good health. Eating too much food can result in excess weight while eating too little can lead to numerous nutrient deficiencies and low body mass. Eating healthy and nutritious food is essential to obtain optimal wellness.

What is Nutrition Month?

Presidential Decree 491  the Nutrition Act of the Philippines appointed the National Nutrition Council (NNC) as the lead agency to coordinate the nationwide celebration of this annual event held every July, the Nutrition Month. Come this 38th year of Nutrition Month, NNC comes up with a theme to call the nation’s  attention and action on a particular issue.

What are objectives of the 2012 Nutrition Month celebration and what is its  theme?

The 38th Nutrition Month celebration will focus on vegetables with the theme  “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw‐araw itong ihain!”

The objectives of this year’s  celebration are to:

a. increase vegetable consumption as part of a healthy diet to address  micronutrient deficiencies and non‐communicable diseases;

Page 4: TCU Nutrition month

b.   b. promote vegetable gardening as a source of additional food and income;  andc.   increase demand for vegetables to help local vegetable farmers.

Why give importance to vegetables?

Nutrition Month focuses on vegetables for several reasons:

a. Filipinos are eating less and less vegetables.  Based on food consumption  surveys, Filipinos on average are eating less and less vegetables per day in  the last three decades

b. Across regions, consumption varies   c. Influence of family members who do not eat vegetables  d. Dislike for vegetables because of taste and texture  e. Preference for meat than vegetables  f. Cultural beliefs about vegetables (e.g. eating squash can cause  leprosy)  g. Vegetables are expensive  h. Fear of chemicals and pesticides  i. Vegetables require more time  to prepare   j. Preference for fast foods and instant foods  k. Lack of supply   l. Lack of knowledge on nutritional and health benefits of vegetables.

Challenges

Putting up an event is not that easy but very much rewarding. From gathering all the Class Officers from different sections of HRM Seniors, brainstorming about the logo and the school theme; the programme which was really the backbone of the event; the line- ups of the games and contests; the very important people that must be part of the program; the preliminary and final editing up to the invitations to send to all those people concerned, and most of all, for putting our trust and counting on with each other that at the end of the day, everything will turn out good. And it turned out to be the best and that’s what made it more rewarding! It was worth all the effort and all the sleepless nights, indeed!

Though we are financially unstable, we learned to reach out to those who can afford to be sponsors and we can even bother to take penny out from our own pockets. Little things that were part of the efforts. Though, there were changes in sectioning this semester, and we met new classmates, still, it became the turning point for us to build camaraderie and unity. We fought hard for each section. We have achieved our common goal and not to be the best but be united as one.

They said that HRM seniors have proven enough but I may say that we are still hungry for knowledge and there will always be rooms for more improvements that we can use in the future and we can share and leave behind the students from our younger level

Page 23: TCU Nutrition month

Lessons Learned

Though it seems that everything and everybody is on the rush, unity, camaraderie and friendship were built among us. We worked and stood as one to achieve our goals. There are certain people who really got the leadership skills who truly stood up for the success of the event. The speakers were loaded with self- confidence and delivered their piece as if they are just talking in front of the mirror. We have also developed flexibility and patience. Instead of nagging about someone’s fault, we just did our best shot to save time and effort. Everyone’s creativity was challenged from the title and concept of their Caribbean Centerpieces, the themes of their posters and slogans, and to the concept of their booths.

The event would not possible without each other. Everybody has given their best shots in their own little ways. But those little ways have turned the event into more meaningful, more rewarding, and even more successful one!

Page 24: TCU Nutrition month

Recommendations

We must develop a sense of time management always. We must organize things to avoid rushing everything and to get rid of running from everything and everywhere just to know that everything falls in their proper places. Time management is a talent everyone must develop. If we truly know that everything is planned accordingly and we have our second and even third set set of plans just in case some things happen, definitely, there will be no haggard moments during the event. Everybody will be seated and very much relaxed watching how the crowd appreciates all the hardships and the efforts of the team. It is good to see the team watches with the crowd and applauding every part of the event!
